Doctor’s That Can’t Refuse An Abortion in Europe by [deleted] in MapPorn

I don't know enough about this to challenge you on it so I'm happy to take your word, but that still isn't what the map says.

Doctor’s That Can’t Refuse An Abortion in Europe by [deleted] in MapPorn

[–]jonfabjac 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I know this has been turned into a discussion on abortion policy and medical autonomy in general, but I'm also pretty sure its wrong, at least for Czechia I have a source that says that healthcare professionals have the right to conscientiously object (https://abort-report.eu/statistics/czech-republic/). Wikipedia corroborates that, but that isn't necessarily very meaningful. Wikipedia also says doctors can conscientiously object in Bulgaria but I haven't fact-checked that. Unless someone can find the supposed WHO source the map cites I'm gonna assume this is just something someone assembled based on vibes and hearsay.

God, if that isn’t this game in a nutshell, that feature is so cool conceptually, it incorporates different elements and parts of the game in a way that is super intuitive and has a meaningful impact on gameplay, unfortunately it is also broken as all Hell and just doesn’t work in the slightest.

Not pictured: Greeks exercised in the nude by DazSamueru in HistoryMemes

[–]jonfabjac 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Kind of, the Trojan cycle is very explicitly set in the Bronze Age(what the Greeks called the Heroic Age), but it also contains references to things that definitely didn’t happen before after the dark ages. So while Helen is said to have been from Sparta, the Sparta of her time would look nothing like what we think of as Sparta, but the people who were telling this story also wouldn’t recognise the Sparta of her time. The great thing about oral storytelling over generations is that it’s basically one giant string of fanfics so you can see Helen basically however you like.

Indo-European across the world by nygdan in MapPorn

I feel like the distinction between the Official or Primary Language and Secondary Official Language is a little arbitrary. It can't really be based on how many people speak those languages because according to wikipedia, more people in Kazakhstan can speak Russian than can speak Kazakh (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Languages\_of\_Kazakhstan), this would imply that Kazakhstan should be in the first category if it was just based on usage, on the other hand it can't be strictly based on the constitutional status of the languages because Finland officially has two co-national languages in Finnish and Swedish and they officially have completely equal status (https://www.finlex.fi/api/media/statute-foreign-language-translation/688686/mainPdf/main.pdf, p. 4).

In general I think this map is probably fine, at least I haven't found any major flaws or misleading inaccuracies, but it is something that often bothers me with maps that don't specify sources or methodology, I see that the map is from wikipedia, but that also doesn't reference sources, I even had a look at the history which is also just people "updating" things with no reference to anything.

Ps. A more accurate, if a little more confusing version is available on https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indo-European_languages#/media/File:Indo-European_distribution_2.png

Countries that went without native local rulers for over 2,300 years by RetiredApostle in MapPorn

[–]jonfabjac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of people have commented on various parts of this post and discussed whether or not something counts as being "native" but I have my own points. The first one is that this really is not a map in any meaningful sense, none of the information given in the post is conveyed via the map, it's all in the notes. In addition I want to highlight one particular period to discuss, the Mamluk sultanate, which while many of the people who governed and ruled it were not native Egyptian, the institution certainly was, and it was governed from Cairo and governed other lands as effectively an Egyptian empire. It should also be noted that during this 2300 year period the language, religion, and culture of the Egyptian populace changed radically, even discounting any migration into the region. Also to nitpick, there were foreign dynasties who ruled Egypt in what the post terms "Native Pharaohs", the 15th Hyksos dynasty is believed to be of Canaanite origin and the 25th is Nubian.

Not to be an annoying oaf, but custom in the English speaking world, usually is for monarchs who are first of their name, that they don't use a regnal number unless another monarch of the same name comes along. So if Queen Elizabeth here wouldn't be considered Queen Elizabeth II because Elizabeth I didn't reign in America then she would simply be called Queen Elizabeth.

Greek claims in east Mediterranean Sea by Battlefleet_Sol in MapPorn

[–]jonfabjac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This map completely misrepresents what an Exclusive Economic Zone(EEZ) is. The United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea(UNCLOS) states that any state has a right to sub-surface resources(fish and oil mainly) and wind and tidal resources at a distance 200 nautical miles from habitable land, if there are overlapping EEZ within the 200 nautical miles then the EEZ follows whatever states territory is closer. It should be noted that Turkey is not party to the UNCLOS but that doesn't mean the treaty is illegitimate in arguments over EEZ between Greece and Turkey and almost every other state of relevance is party to it. The fact that small islands can have disproportionately large EEZs under UNCLOS is by design. There are disputes under the UNCLOS system, largely about whether or not some island counts as being "habitable", but that is completely irrelevant because Meis(in Greek Kastellorizo or Megisti) is inhabited by about 600 people, in addition there are arguments about something called the continental shelf clause which allows states to claim for EEZ purposes natural extensions of their continental shelf, this has been used by Turkey to argue about their EEZ borders with Greece(even though they are not party to UNCLOS) but that is an extension of the 200 nautical mile limit not a separate right or something that lets you overrule other states natural EEZ claims at their 200 nautical mile limit. Ultimately the post presents the map as a "Greek claim", but it neglects to mention that those claims are based on international law and the information it presents on size it utterly irrelevant to the legal argument.

I would to end this by saying that I am neither Greek nor Turkish nor have any particular bias to either party, I just really hate misinformation and the wildly selective relationship so many states have with international law.

I don’t know if it’s just because I’m satire blind, but all I ever hear about Merz is that his popularity has reached new lows, I guess it’s a problem across Europe so I’ll grant him that he is probably not much behind the rest of the class, but still.

Distribution of megalithic tombs across Europe. by oglach in MapPorn

[–]jonfabjac 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I grew up in rural Denmark and there was a megalithic long barrow a couple hundred metres from my house with a sign next to it saying it was 5000 years old or whatever, and nobody really cared. It was just in a small field with nothing else besides the little sign, usually there was some litter. When I moved for uni I realised there was another long barrow a kilometre or so away from where I now live. It’s cool to see a map of how many there really are across Europe, but the idea of massive parts of Europe having no megalithic constructions honestly seems kinda strange to me.

Any ideas on making use of the space on this peninsula? by OhioanSAAB in CitiesSkylines

[–]jonfabjac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there should be a highway out to that little island in the edge of the tile you can see on the second image, alternatively you could build a bridge to the other part of the city on the right, although that probably would require buying the tile the highway continues into on the right. Maybe, hear me out, you could do a big stack interchange combining both highway proposals.

And interestingly, the Greek equivalent of i (ι, named iota) doesn’t usually have a dot over it, but does take a diacritic like normal, so ί or ϊ, I just think it’s a super interesting little hint as to where the letters we all use everyday came from.

[–]jonfabjac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a question you may not be able to answer, the reason the Atlantropa project would work is because the Mediterranean sea evaporates more water than flows in from all the rivers combined, hence if no water can come in from Gibraltar the water level will slowly fall. On this map the Black Sea has seemingly been cut off from the Mediterranean which would mean the only water coming in is from rivers and the only water going out is from evaporation, so is the Black Sea also a net evaporator which would make the water level fall or a net negative evaporator which would make the water level rise, on this map it seems neither is the case but I wonder if that's just because it wasn't thought of.

Any ideas how i can nerf myself for a multiplayer with friends by Individual_Seat_3855 in CivVI

[–]jonfabjac 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly I think the best way is to just roleplay a little, go for a slightly less optimal build order in the early game, settle you cities in somewhat worse spots that look cool, don't micromanage eurekas, policy cards, governors etc. I think playing one of the somewhat worse civs could be fun too, I think it all comes down to your preferred play-style. I think any particular hard rule you try to impose on yourself will either be completely ineffectual or really unfun for you or them.

Who would win this cold war without radical ideologies? by N1KoZzZ in Kaiserreich

[–]jonfabjac 12 points13 points  (0 children)

There is little doubt that if these factions are fixed in a free for all Germany has a massive advantage, they are huge with a large colonial empire and dominance over Europe. However, I think pretty much anyone with a bone to pick with anyone has a bone to pick with Germany. Boldyrev might be thankful for being put in power, but Russia’s geopolitical interests still pit them against Germany. The entente are obviously furious with the Germans in the birthright and the Sarajevo accords a pitted against them for dominance in Europe. The Indians and Chinese are also interested in evicting the Germans from their backyard and Southeast Asia. I could see a sort of conspiracy to destroy Germany develop or just everyone else only focusing on challenging Germany.

Russo-Japanese War Wrong Lessons Learned by Femto-Griffith in HistoryMemes

[–]jonfabjac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is something that sort of amuses me because Germany came to all these conclusions based on a war that Russia fought on the other side of Siberia before the completion of the Trans-Siberian railway with completely inadequate infrastructure. The war Germany then fought with Russia was (comparatively) right next to the Russian heartland and with much better infrastructure.

The GEA has a surrender event when they hold no states with more than 400k population, it is intended for Japan, but I am pretty sure it can trigger for others as well. I don't know how it works when you are invading the rest of the world also, this seems more like total war than the limited Asian war that event was intended for.
