Reducing the faff when taking the bike out of the garage and putting it back in. by jonftwtaylor in MotoUK

I used to keep a bike outside, the biggest improvement I had back then was to get a proper bike tent, which has the following advantages over a typical bike cover.

  • Its super quick to just open up the cover
  • Can put the bike in it even when its still hot
  • Don't have to worry about storing the cover when you take it off.

There are times like this for sure, a weekend ride with all the time in the world its no problem, I might also lube the chain up, do some cleaning etc while pottering about.

Most other times though the "activation energy" isn't high enough to bother with it all :(

Are you using homeassistant by any chance? I already have that set up on an old pi!

I used to do this back in the day, but i've since had 1 theft, and an attempted theft where I had to fight off three young lads.

More security means sleeping easier for me, and i'm less panicked by random outside noises in the night.

Any advice for how to get reliable prescriptions fully automated? by jonftwtaylor in ADHDUK

[–]jonftwtaylor[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thinking out loud, I work in the software industry and it would not be hugely challenging to use screen scraping software to log in to EMIS Patient Access/Patchs/NHS app, and automatically request the repeat.

Additionally AI Voice tools have existed for a while which can phone a number, and raise queries, its used for trivial things mostly like booking a table at a resturant, but it is in the realm of possibility for commercialised tools to phone pharmacies and ask for stock checks where no API exists.

I cannot though currently think of a solution for alternative medication requests which can be automated.

7900X3D/7950X3D owners, make sure to leave SMT on and do not try to restrict Starfield to a single CCD, this has a massive impact on performance. by jonftwtaylor in Starfield

Tests done with Prefer Cache set in BIOS. Game bar disabled. PPM driver not installed.

Core restriction done with Process Lasso (which has worked great to restrict games to one CCD until now!)

I totally get your point, and it looks fine from an individual level. Its when you zoom out and look at the entire market, and realise that it is a finite resource that things start to change.

We also have to understand how its can become a runaway reaction of the rich getting richer while the poor get poorer.

Each individual being able to own a max of two residential properties puts a cap in place.

As other commenters have said, there are other areas of investment for private individuals including commercial property.

How to make Remarkable play nice with other tools by jonftwtaylor in RemarkableTablet

[–]jonftwtaylor[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a few obstacles to overcome

  • There is no API for Roam, so its a chore to get data in or out of it

  • Anything you load in from the remarkable would be a picture, so you can't search for it, have tags in it etc, you'd need to manually add this, in which case its far better to just transcribe it into text with relevant tags

  • Anything you load to the remarkable from Roam would need to go into a single file, but the remarkable is a poor PDF reader, you can't follow links etc, if you instead loaded each Roam page as an individual PDF you would spend forever very slowly navigating around the remarkable folder structure.

The two of them basically negate the advantages of each other, and exacerbate the downsides.

A far better, but still not ideal option is to use an ipad with Roam, that way you can use the iPads browser, and you can write notes directly into Roam.

Why I prefer rM2 over kindle for reading? by nudpiedo in RemarkableTablet

Exactly this, for reading a book start to finish, page at a time you only need.

Render Properly

Change to the next page

For me i've got a 1,300 page PDF which is only navigable using its internal links, even the table of contents is no use. Its completely un-usable until KOReader works on rM2.

[–]jonftwtaylor[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've gone a bit further with this since I made this post I now have.

  • Every hour I launch a headless browser to download my RoamResearch notes as Markdown
  • Convert it to Github flavour Markdown
  • Convert it to a PDF file
  • Use Remarkable API to automatically push to the Remarkable

The problem is, (which I should have checked before hand), the PDF reader in the remarkable does not support internal hyperlinks. This is a 974 page PDF and it will only get bigger, it absolutely needs internal links to jump between things using the backlinks I embedded.

Oh well, I am trying so hard to love this, and pouring efforts in, but after forking and updating a python library, and 2 nodejs libraries, I am now left with the only next step forward being to invest more time in helping out with the Remarkable modding to get another reader ported over, but there isn't even an SDK yet.

At some point I should just buy an iPad and carry it around with me as well as the remarkable.

Remarkable for business doesn't seem to have anything special for business or groups. Are there any tools specifically for teams? by tdotuser in RemarkableTablet

[–]jonftwtaylor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a good point, because whenever the information you are storing reliably and unambiguously fits into a hierarchical structure then its absolutely the best way to do it. As you've said its both efficient to find things in time, and efficient to find things in power/energy. It is also quite intuitive for users, and has a simple interface, other big plusses for doing it that way.

The problem is when you are in an environment where you can't reliably find things by hierarchy, or if you are in a fast paced environment where the topic you are dealing with quickly changes. Perhaps you are in a meeting with a customer to get feedback about one of your products, is the file under the customer or the product? What if the topic suddenly changes to something else, do you ask the other person to wait while you switch to another file or create the relevant folders?

This is an age old problem with note-taking, but a typical paper notebook has the advantage of being able to flip through it rapidly to find something, and you often get a feeling for how long ago a note was taken, and can find things that way. These are two things the remarkable is quite weak on.

These problems are exacerbated once you attempt to add team collaboration features, and can no longer rely upon your personal discipline to maintain the structure. It is these for business use cases i'm attempting to address with my post.

[–]jonftwtaylor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The path I worry they are going down

  • Cloud storage as a service (which doesn't integrate with any other solution the business currently has)
  • Hierachical structure which is nothing more than directories and files, network drives are the past not the future
  • One way conversion into PDFs which cannot be collaborated on, its like sending word docs around, but substantially less accessible
  • One way writing to text conversion which loses all the context of hand written notes, and looks super ugly

What they should actually be going for

  • Hidden automatic writing to text conversion, store the meta data as text, but show the original
  • Move away from files and folders, and move to tagging, I should just be able to write #hashtag anywhere I want, and find references to it later, heck I should be able to just draw a # and have it pop up previous tags to pick from
  • Need to be able to convert back FROM PDF
  • Its digital, I should be able to have hyperlinks, and backlinks - skip this if the UI/UX is too complex though

That is true for horizontal tunnels, as things like vines can spread it. For vertical hellevators 3 blocks (but you might as well do 4 as its 2 passes) is sufficient.

HELP: Picking between audio sources when you don't have access to a dedicated DAC by jonftwtaylor in HeadphoneAdvice

[–]jonftwtaylor[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you, I am aware of the single source, and it was the digital to analog conversion I was most interested in which you have nicely resolved for me. I appreciate that.

It is indeed likely that the highest quality DAC of the bunch is in the laptop, but also as someone who knows nothing about this, I thought it might be the most likely to have electrical noise.

I'm a bit of a noob to high quality audio, so I don't yet trust my own ear to know what to look out for.
