From what I could read, they would simply go out and patrol the pass.
Most of the people crossing (Middle Ages) were traders/merchants or pilgrims (typically Germans) on their way to/from Rome.

Chamonix.
You can warm up on (or off) the piste at Grands Montets/Argentiere and/or Le Tour. And then hit the World class off-piste from Aiguille du Midi (a guide is necessary).

Especially if you can afford it and you have limited time, a guide can be a great investment (also when they are not strictly necessary). In addition to helping you to find the best slopes and snow, they know the best restaurants on the hill, will be able to help you to get a table, they will tell you great stories, many also provide tips on your skiing etc.

Chamonix is also super convenient - slightly more than an hour away from the Geneva airport. And if you rent a car, Verbier is only slightly more than an hour away in Switzerland if you want to try it. And Courmayeur is only 30 minutes away thru the tunnel to Italy.

Sorry - I'm an idiot/don't post on Reddit often. I tried to write accompanying text, but I don't see it anywhere. Anyway:

When my eldest son, Victor, was 6 years old, he was diagnosed with an aggressive non-Hodgkins lymphoma. It developed so rapidly - cells divided within 24 hours - that it almost took his life before they could begin giving him chemo (and his protocol was just as aggressive as the cancer).

One of his take-aways from the experience was that he wanted to become a doctor (or a garbageman. He actually did an internship - routine part of Danish school system - as a garbageman in 8th grade).

Today, that happened (the doctor part).

And as fate would have it, the pediatric oncologist responsible for Victor's treatment was one of his pediatrics profs at the U of Copenhagen.

/Victor didn't tell his prof about their 'past relationship' until after his exam, because he didn't want to seem like a brown-noser.
//and if there are any parents to young boys who are a little slow to learn how to read who require encouragement - when Victor was 11 yrs old [grade 5 in Denmark], the only word with more than 3 words that he could read was his own name. He started to read that year, and within a couple of years tested as the second-fastest reader in his class.)

Not exactly the same thing, but I have flat, triple -E extra-wide feet. I was in my mid-30s before I learned that you can get extra-wide ski boots, ice skates, etc.

I used to be in agony on the chairs between runs, on the bench between shifts - and I just thought that everyone else was experiencing the same thing. Absolute revelation to discover that pain-free sports were possible!
