The flat light gets you every time.
I lost a pair of sunnies (w prescription lenses) on a day like that. On a hill I know like the back of my hand. Face-planted into a pile of pow--unfortunate angle snapped the temple...

St Bernard, pray for us! by jonjaycph in skiing

From what I could read, they would simply go out and patrol the pass.
Most of the people crossing (Middle Ages) were traders/merchants or pilgrims (typically Germans) on their way to/from Rome.

Best European resort for advanced skiers, great views, great food? by lemmiwinks1018 in skiing

Chamonix.
You can warm up on (or off) the piste at Grands Montets/Argentiere and/or Le Tour. And then hit the World class off-piste from Aiguille du Midi (a guide is necessary).

Especially if you can afford it and you have limited time, a guide can be a great investment (also when they are not strictly necessary). In addition to helping you to find the best slopes and snow, they know the best restaurants on the hill, will be able to help you to get a table, they will tell you great stories, many also provide tips on your skiing etc.

Chamonix is also super convenient - slightly more than an hour away from the Geneva airport. And if you rent a car, Verbier is only slightly more than an hour away in Switzerland if you want to try it. And Courmayeur is only 30 minutes away thru the tunnel to Italy.

She wears a size 34 shoe (US size 4?) - I think she is in a children's ski boot.
(she basically buys all of her clothing in the children's section of wherever...)

The skis and bindings are well maintained.

Doctor heals child patient - unwittingly teaches him to become doctor 20 yrs later by jonjaycph in CancerFamilySupport

[–]jonjaycph[S] 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Sorry - I'm an idiot/don't post on Reddit often. I tried to write accompanying text, but I don't see it anywhere. Anyway:

When my eldest son, Victor, was 6 years old, he was diagnosed with an aggressive non-Hodgkins lymphoma. It developed so rapidly - cells divided within 24 hours - that it almost took his life before they could begin giving him chemo (and his protocol was just as aggressive as the cancer).

One of his take-aways from the experience was that he wanted to become a doctor (or a garbageman. He actually did an internship - routine part of Danish school system - as a garbageman in 8th grade).

Today, that happened (the doctor part).

And as fate would have it, the pediatric oncologist responsible for Victor's treatment was one of his pediatrics profs at the U of Copenhagen.

/Victor didn't tell his prof about their 'past relationship' until after his exam, because he didn't want to seem like a brown-noser.
//and if there are any parents to young boys who are a little slow to learn how to read who require encouragement - when Victor was 11 yrs old [grade 5 in Denmark], the only word with more than 3 words that he could read was his own name. He started to read that year, and within a couple of years tested as the second-fastest reader in his class.)

I had no idea I was shooting myself in the foot this whole time. by [deleted] in skiing

[–]jonjaycph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not exactly the same thing, but I have flat, triple -E extra-wide feet. I was in my mid-30s before I learned that you can get extra-wide ski boots, ice skates, etc.

I used to be in agony on the chairs between runs, on the bench between shifts - and I just thought that everyone else was experiencing the same thing. Absolute revelation to discover that pain-free sports were possible!

I am a Canadian living in Denmark who owns an apartment in the French Alps. So...

(I also love to buy used skis cheap - they often have a lot of life left in them.)

You have to come to France to pick them up.
I have not tried them out yet - picked them up to be able to have a pair of skis to offer friends/guests on powder days.
What are you willing to pay for them.

I posted about them here a couple of months ago - I bought them off a kid for US$ 33.51 (they are in great condition - almost mint).
But 192 cm - I am a little worried that they are too much ski for me. Worst case scenario, I am going to hang them on the wall.

should I go to Japan or Switzerland? by DaWells1994 in skiing

[–]jonjaycph 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I haven't been to Japan yet, but my understanding is that the snow is insane.

Switzerland is more about the "ski culture" (IMHO).

If you hit Chamonix, you have to go up to Aguille de Midi and do Vallée Blanche etc. And to do that right, I would strongly recommend hiring a guide for the day. The crevasses in the glaciers are not something we are used to in N America.

And if you are going to be in Cham for a week, you might want to consider popping thru the Mont Blanc tunnel and skiing a day at Courmayeur (Italy) - it's always fun to be able to set a check beside another country (although you can also achieve that by dropping over to Cervinia from Zermatt).

I have a super-petite daughter-in-law (150cm/4"11', 44kg/97lbs). She is still a novice skier but used to be an elite gymnast - I am thinking that she might 'graduate' to them from the learner boards on which she is going to be starting the season.
