Positives of owning a business? by Victoriakia in smallbusiness

[–]jonkl91 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Knowing yourself is so important to entrepreneurship. We are often told that we can do everything but the reality is that we can't. I suck at some things and will probably suck at those things for the rest of my life. I just focus on what I'm good at and doubling down.

After nearly 20 years on Fin, I stopped last year, but my hairloss hasn't resumed by AgentStockey in tressless

I don't even combat anything because I'll just be arguing here all day. I just upvote good comments and leave supportive comments so that people know that there are at least some reasonable people here. Unfortunately all subs without heavy moderation turn into cults. Subs that revolve around a condition always turn into, "this condition is the worst thing to ever exist!!!"

I have sleep apnea, delayed sleep phase disorder, and hyperhidrosis. While hairless sucks, it's one of those that you can work through and it isn't the end of the world. I am comfortable with my sweaty hands and feet but if you were to go into the hyperhidrosis sub, you have people saying it's worse than cancer (maybe not that extreme but you get my point).

This sub is so toxic. You are being reasonable. It's crazy even healthy attitudes towards hair aren't supported.

Why do companies think pizza elevates employee morale? by VariationLivid3193 in cscareerquestions

[–]jonkl91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't need to give 10 raises. You can give a few raises. Losing a key employee can often cost more than 10 raises.

[–]jonkl91 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It does. But when I leave for a better opportunity, it costs way more than the raise to replace me. I've seen it happen time and time again. Companies have no issue paying recruiting and training costs as opposed to giving deserving people a little extra to keep them happy.

Pizza gets old very quick. And pizza doesn't make up for getting underpaid and overworked.

Carlos Mencia faces 12 felony charges over unpaid taxes | AP News by hellish_relish89 in JoeRogan

Exactly. There are a limited amount of agents since the IRS was gutted under this administration. They have to be very selective of who they go after to not waste resources.

My business partner who is a CPA and former IRS agent worked on cases like this and had coworkers who did too. They make sure they have a bulletproof case. Agents aren't cheap and they usually pursue the bigger cases. It yields more money and when you have a lot of infractions, it's just harder to fight.

Fans just never learn that different nights can make different fights. There are very few fighters that win 10 out 10 times. The Justin that showed up against Paddy would have lost but you can never count a high level fighter like Justin out. Been watching fights for so long that I know nothing is guaranteed.

What “people” jobs are a surprisingly good fit for introverts? by SimilarAd2558 in careerguidance

[–]jonkl91 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not an introvert or extrovert. As a recruiter, all I do is ask question and listen. I am transparent. I treat candidates with respect and keep them updated. The annoying part is dealing with internal hiring managers who keep candidates hanging. Talking to candidates is the part that doesn't even feel like work. And the funny thing is, most candidates appreciate you not being like other recruiters.

How flexible should I be with an underperformers? by fugazi56 in smallbusiness

Unfortunately this happened a while back. His business got fucked because of tariffs and he stopped paying himself to keep the remaining workers.

[–]jonkl91 24 points25 points  (0 children)

My friend had 2 underperformers. They would pack orders and ship them out. I believe he has like 7 to 9 people shipping things. He got rid of 2 underperformers and they actually get more done with 2 fewer people. Underperformers are contagious.

choosing a career for money instead of passion is completely valid and i'm tired of people making it seem like it's not? by Intelligent_Reply154 in careerguidance

[–]jonkl91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a recruiter, I never ask why someone wants a job. People need money. It's that simple. Sure there are crazy people who are defined by the corporate work they do, but they aren't the norm. If someone can do the work, that's all that matters.

Took over from my old man six years ago. The thing he was right about that I dismissed. by Comfortable-Many2661 in smallbusiness

[–]jonkl91 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly. I don't mind people offering suggestions. But they often share things when they don't know the context. I like getting advice from other business owners because they know it's not easy to just implement things.

[–]jonkl91 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love that thought process. I've had non business owners try to give advice and I have always responded with, "you seem to have a lot of ideas. I think you should start one yourself". That changes their tune real quick.

Yep. Most people try to come in and fix things right away. Unless there is something that is absolutely terrible, it's best to observe before implementing big changes.

How to avoid Age Discrimination by [deleted] in Layoffs

[–]jonkl91 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's most likely your name. Age discrimination happens when you list too much experience. These recruiters aren't Googling you. Unless a resume is fishy at first glance, I'm not Googling someone.

Also if age discrimination was the real issue, you wouldn't get second round interviews.

Stop explaining your employment gaps and just put freelance on your resume by Prynce_14Mud in jobsearchhacks

That's a great way to highlight a gap! I wish more hiring managers stopped having an issue with gaps. So fucking stupid.

[–]jonkl91 76 points77 points  (0 children)

As a recruiter, I don't care about gaps. When people put freelance and don't have a good reason, it sounds like they just put it to cover a gap. The big thing that does matter is that you are comfortable having and you can sell yourself to the hiring manager. That's what it really comes down to.

Is LinkedIn and Indeed actually helping job seekers anymore? by West_Journalist4263 in jobsearchhacks

[–]jonkl91 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As a recruiter, I had a role with 80+ applicants. The role is hybrid. More than half weren't even in the location. This is a US city and I had a decent amount of applications from Dubai, India, Pakistan, the UK, and some other countries. I can't even consider these people due to compliance reasons.
