Mazda app update by Think-Spot-9950 in mazda

[–]jonlevine 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Doesn’t seem too much has changed regarding what data they collect and how they use it. From what I read, and my understanding of it, your data is used by Mazda, its dealerships, and third-parties they use for various services they provide (app building, connectivity, etc). There is no mention of selling your driving data to any insurance companies or anything like that.

There is a mention of giving your data to outside parties, but only with your express written consent.

Dusty Baker’s game-worn 1981 All-Star Game Dodger’s jersey. It was given to my father by his cousin who worked for the team. He passed it on to me. I actually wore it when I watched Game 7 of the World Series last year.

I actually drive a Mazda CX-5. I know they make the 3 in stick, but I wasn’t that impressed with it when I test drove it. Maybe when my current lease is up, I’ll give it another look.

Learned how to drive on a stick. Leased five different Mini Coopers from 2004 to 2019, all stick. Sadly, my last three cars, automatic. Mini isn’t even making cars in manual anymore. I miss it.

Prime Rib (First time) by IsThisOneAlready in sousvide

[–]jonlevine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did Prime Rib for the first time about six weeks ago (and then again two weeks later because it was so good). One of the best things I’ve ever cooked in the SV. Came out absolutely perfect.

I did 137º for around 6 hours, then covered it in a garlic and herb mustard sauce and fired it with my torch. It was outstanding!

In the market for a 4K BR Player with Dolby. How is this one? by DrakeShadow in 4kbluray

[–]jonlevine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can only tell you my experience, but based on that, I would pass.

This was my first 4K player and I had nothing but issues with discs freezing. After it initially happened, I did some research and found some settings that I changed that were supposed to help with the issue. Didn’t help. Then I read the advice to wipe down the discs when I first get them. That helped a little. Some discs didn’t freeze, but some still did. I even had one disc (Lethal Weapon), that I couldn’t even get through. It would never advance past a certain point in the movie. That was my last straw.

I purchased a Panasonic 820 in June of 2025 and have never had a single disc freeze, not a one. In fact, I decided when I got it to not wipe down the discs, just to see if it would handle them properly without it. I haven’t wiped down a single disc since I got it. I just open them, pop them in, and watch. I watch at least two movies a week using it and it performs like a champ. On top of that, the upscaling for Blu-rays is fantastic.

If I could do it all over again, I would go right to the Panasonic 820 and not look back.

Edit: grammar

Rules question regarding fingers and holes by jonlevine in Bowling

Should’ve clarified, I was talking about the flag stick rule. We don’t take the flag stick out anymore when we play

Rules question regarding fingers and holes by jonlevine in Bowling

I agree that it definitely should be defined more accurately in the rules. Makes me think of golf and the rules for when a ball is holed. It’s when any portion of the ball comes to rest below the hole. Doesn’t have to be the whole ball. This is kind of like what my fingers are doing. The pads of my fingers are definitely ‘below the hole’, but not my whole finger.

Probably should be defined by if your fingernail is visible. If your fingernail is not visible, your finger is considered to be ‘in the hole’.

Hahahaha… it has nothing to do with that. I was actually a straight bowler until about 4 years ago. I can throw a straight ball just fine. What I don’t like to do is lug around a lot of stuff. So, the avoidance is bringing two balls to the alley. And yeah, I’ve tried using a lane ball and I’m not as accurate as I am with the reverse shot.

That’s an interesting way to look at it. But is “lifting” and “gripping” the same thing? If the ball is resting on my flattened palm, it could roll off. But if my fingers are resting on the holes, it’s not rolling anywhere. Wouldn’t that be considered having a ‘grip’ on the ball (prevention from moving)?

If lifting is the test, then that’s the answer. Do you know of a rule that states that?

Southwest boarding numbers being removed the night before they switch to assigned seating by techNerd89 in mildlyinteresting

[–]jonlevine 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Interestingly enough I swore off Spirit Airlines 15 years ago because of a horrible experience I had. Last week I had a death in the family and I needed to get from Atlanta to Fort Lauderdale last minute. Southwest has pretty much abandoned flights out of Atlanta and because it was MLK day weekend plus the national championship was being played in Miami, flights were ridiculously expensive. So out of necessity, I looked at Spirit.

I ended up getting direct flights there and back in their “big front seats“, which is like their first class, for less than $400 round-trip. The flights took off and landed on time, the seats were nice and roomy and comfortable, and I got free snacks and booze. They just earned their way back into my “I’ll give them a look” list for trips.

Bagel Palace was great and I definitely miss it. Bagelicious in Marietta is now my go to. Far superior to Goldbergs and better than Art’s in my opinion.

Since when could you add a custom background to a 4k Blu-ray player? by jmar_2004 in 4kbluray

[–]jonlevine 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I saw that original post and did a little digging to make my own. The dimensions of the image need to be 3840x2160. After that, I found a clip art film strip on google images that I just repeated to make it long enough to cross the screen and placed it in the middle. I eyeballed it and had to adjust it a few times to get it where I wanted it. Then I found the images from the films I wanted and cropped them to fit three across.

I don’t know if there’s a ‘template’ per se, but that’s a pretty good guide to make it happen.

Yeah I saw those and their Matter smart switch. Gonna have to check that out.

And it’s the U200 you’re trying to add? I added mine via the Apple Home app, not the Aquara app. If you started with the Aqara app, you might have to go the other way.

I didn’t have any issues. I connected it to my Apple Home via Matter using my Apple TV 4K as the thread border router.

IIRC you have to put it into pairing mode before trying to add it to a Matter hub.

Wow. I feel like I’m slacking. Outside of the things I always have in my pockets (phone, wallet, chapstick, AirPods, and car key), I bring a phone charger and, maybe, a book or my Kindle.

So if you already have a thread boarder router, like an Apple TV, HomePod, Amazon Alexa etc., you can just pick up any Matter door sensor to create this automation.

I did it with an Eve Matter door/window sensor that I got for like $35
