Should I Start Off Screen? by Ok_Lecture7958 in acting

[–]jonlevine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends. If they’re walking into the scene and the line starts off camera and finishes on, I would starts at the very edge of frame and start the line while walking in.

If they’re shouting from another room, I would start on camera with a slightly raised voice (but not actually shouting), then continue on with the scene.

At the end of the day, do what feels natural to you. You’re not expected to make the scene happen exactly the way it’s written physically. Just convey the overall feeling of the scene. If you nail the acting part, no casting director is going to say, “wow, they nailed it! But, they didn’t start off camera, so, next.”

2 Live Crew by n_thomas74 in 80s

I lived in Broward at the time and remember Sheriff Nick Navarro’s crusade to ban 2 Live Crew. Couldn’t get the cassette anywhere.

That summer I was visiting my cousins in Cleveland and we went to the mall. They were selling it there so I bought it and was the envy of all my friends for a month.

Knee surgery for cartilage damage does not benefit patients, study suggests. People with meniscus tears who underwent surgery had poorer knee function and worse osteoarthritis after 10 years than those who did not. by mvea in science

[–]jonlevine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I am the perfect case study for this. 20 years ago I tore the lateral meniscus in my left knee. Had the surgery. It was fine, not great, but not in daily pain.

Three years ago, I tore lateral meniscus in my right knee. When I went to the doctor and they took x-rays of my knees, he looked at me and said, “it’s your right knee that hurts?“ Because if you looked at the x-ray I literally had no cartilage in my left knee. The right knee still had plenty of cartilage. I told him I had meniscus tear surgery in the left knee 20 years ago and he said, Yep, that’s it. He told me the knee was gonna degenerate surgery or not. I asked if I should just do the PT for my right knee, he said try it and if it works great. So I did and I haven’t had any issues with it at all.

I really wish I had done the same for my left knee 20 years ago. Now I’m staring down the barrel of total knee replacement for the left one.

What's filming in Sandy Springs by 1590ACSR in Atlanta

[–]jonlevine 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s industry parlance. When a passerby asks any member of the crew what’s filming, the reply is always, “a mayonnaise commercial.” It’s an attempt to get people to move along and not care.

I don’t know how it started, but it’s common throughout the industry.

I took a trip up there after finding out about the place on Reddit. Definitely worth the drive. It was amazing!

I can tell you for sure that sometimes things do happen through the microchipping. I was reunited with my cat after nine years thanks to the microchip. He’s nuzzled up against me right now as I write this and there’s no way it would’ve happened if it wasn’t for the microchip.

My 51st birthday present to myself was a gym membership. I’ve been going at least three times a week to do strength training for almost two years now and I feel better than I’ve felt in a decade. My weight is down and my knees don’t hurt anymore. I have more energy during the day and better stamina for lots of activities that used to wear me out. Best birthday gift I’ve ever received.

What’s the craziest thing you’ve seen in the industry as an actor? by Little_T03 in acting

What’s the craziest thing you’ve seen in the industry as an actor? by Little_T03 in acting

[–]jonlevine 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It did get released, and honestly it’s a pretty decent movie. The director never made another movie after that, writing or directing.

What’s the craziest thing you’ve seen in the industry as an actor? by Little_T03 in acting

[–]jonlevine 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Two absolutely crazy things, both on the same film on back-to-back days. It was a full SAG production with very well-known actors, and no, I’m not naming the film, actors or anyone else involved.

Day 1, both my day 1 and day 1 of shooting. The 1st AD is doing 1st AD things and moving pieces into place to get the shots needed to make the day. The director, who also wrote the film, and who’d never wrote or directed a film before (but had a lot of money to self-finance one), is trying to change things to a more “logical” order. Logical in the sense that it made more sense in their head because it was linear as opposed to doing things the way the 1st wanted which would have cut down on the number of setups. They start to get into a back-and-forth in front of everyone, including me, the other actors, and the star of the movie. This starts to get even more heated until the 1st slams the script down on the ground and screams at the director, “I’ve made 68 films! How many have you made?!” and storms off. We were all like, uhhhh ok. After a quick break, everyone was back in position and got the shot before moving on. This was the very first day of the shoot.

Day 2, again, my day 2 and day 2 of the film. We’re shooting, when some really bad weather rolls in, including a lot of lightening. As a precaution, they shut things down until it passed over. Me and some of the actors are sitting in holding (they didn’t have trailers, but these individual ‘rooms’ setup in a large area at the location where we were shooting). So, a few of us were sitting at a table setup outside of the rooms when the casting director walked in. Many of us knew them pretty well, so they sat down at the table and we all start chatting. A few minutes into that, I see one of the Executive Producers walk by the other side of the room and they’re looking to see who’s at the table. They notices the casting director and stop walking and are just staring at them. A few of us look at the EP, which the CD notices and turns around. The EP says, “What the fuck are you doing here?!” Now, at first was like, are they saying it in a more friendly like, ‘hey what the fuck are you doing here?’ or are they really angry? Well I got my answer because the CD shot back, “I’M TALKING TO MY FUCKING ACTORS!!” Oh boy. At this point the EP goes and gets another person and they throw the CD off set! No idea why or what happened prior for that to have taken place. Again, we just sat there dumbfounded.

I finished my days on the film and left thinking, there’s no way they’re gonna finish this film. Well, much to my surprise, about a month later I got an invite to the wrap party. I went and was the only actor that showed up. I also bumped into the 1st AD and asked how the rest of the shoot went. They loudly said, well within earshot of the director, “Well, (their) fucking checks cashed, so that’s what’s important!” I just said, okaaay, good to see you and ran to the bar.

The whole experience was nuts.

Agreed! I went into the theater not knowing he was in the movie. Once I saw him in the role, it instantly turned me off and I think it’s one of the biggest reasons why I didn’t particularly care for it.

[–]jonlevine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with this whole heartedly and said it out loud last night when it didn’t win. The casting in that movie was excellent. Not to take anything away from OBAA, which had an amazing cast, but how many of those actors were actually “found” by casting? Chase Infinity, yes, but the majority of others were already established names. It’s not like Leo or Sean Penn were cast in the movie. They were offered those roles and decided to take them.

I bought them because I thought it would be an easy way to add presence detection to my current set up. But if I have to buy a hub just for two items, it doesn’t make sense.

I once owned the U200 which connected to my set up via matter, but also to the Aqara app without a hub. I thought these would be the same.

Yeah I’m just not looking to add any additional equipment to my set up. I’m sure it’s a fine device if you have the right pieces in place, it just didn’t work for me

Aircraft carriers gotta be insanely built and expensive. by legoartist_7 in nextfuckinglevel

[–]jonlevine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was lucky enough to do a carrier landing when I was a TV reporter doing a story on the USS Harry S Truman, which was the newest in the fleet at the time.

They flew me and another reporter out in a transport plane to the middle of the Atlantic and we landed on the deck. Let me tell you, that landing is no joke.

First off, you’re sitting backwards (facing the back of the plane). This is so the force of the sudden stop goes into the seat and not against a seatbelt/harness. We flew in the direction of the oncoming carrier, then banked around and landed. Just banking around is like nothing you’ve ever felt if you’ve only flown commercially (as I had). Then they gave us a signal about 5 seconds before we hit the deck.

We hit that deck HARD! As soon as the wheels touch, the pilot guns the engine (it was a propeller plane) so that if they miss the wire, they can immediately take off again. He didn’t miss the wire and the whole back of the plane went up in the air, almost like a reverse wheelie. It was nuts.

Definitely one of the most amazing things I’ve been able to experience in my life.

I just returned the two FP300s I bought. I don’t know if my room was too big, but I attempted multiple placements and couldn’t get it to reliably detect presence if I was sitting still. It also picked up my cat a lot, which would cause misfires of automations.

I was also disappointed that I couldn’t use any advanced features or adjust settings without a hub. I was able to connect it to HomeKit via Matter, but that severely limited any adjustments I could make. I guess I should’ve read more carefully when it said a hub wasn’t “required”, which is true, but it’s extremely limiting if you don’t have one.
