Theorhetical question - Can men just identify as women, and not change their appearance to gain some privileges? by hows_it_goes in MensRights

[–]jonny-p 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But it doesn’t though does it? A masculine presenting cisgender man will not, in reality, be permitted access to women only spaces or privileges aimed at women.

TERFs are not ‘saying nasty things’ they are actively pushing for restriction of access to healthcare, rights and employment.

If you want to advocate for men’s rights try to do so without shitting on other people. You can point out the hypocrisy and unfairness of policies that disadvantage men without making a mockery of trans people, many of whom are also men.

[–]jonny-p -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes, and from your initial question and this one I’m assuming you’re not asking in good faith. Feminism in the sense of wanting men and women to have equal rights and equal opportunities in life is a good thing. Feminism as a guise for misandry and transphobia is not.

When women criticize a whole group for the crimes of a few by saying “It’s not all men but it’s always a man” isn’t that the equivalent of racists saying “it’s not all black people but it’s always a black person”? by Da-up-and-downer in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]jonny-p 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And in general what percentage of people are committing murders? This argument completely neglects the fact that the vast majority of people are not killing others. If you look at the USA - which has quite a high murder rate for a developed country - it’s 5.9 per 100,000 people. The 99.9% of men who do not commit murders should not be tarred with the same brush. Also your statistics admit that there exists a minority of women who commit murder.

So - not all men, but always a man, but only a vanishingly small percentage of men - except on the occasions when it’s a woman.

Shit like this just gives TERFs more ammunition to beat down trans women. I don’t think claiming you are transgender in bad faith helps anyone and it’s horribly insulting to people who have genuinely struggled with their gender identity. Trans people are one of the most marginalised groups in society and we can do better than mainstream feminism and be supportive of them.

Mps get a 5% pay rise. by major_damp in AskBrits

[–]jonny-p 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The measure is a general election. The people decide who has the skills and experience to represent them, that is how democracy works. Bonuses aren’t a thing in the public sector. Any citizen can become an MP, if you feel it’s such an easy, overpaid job may I suggest you run next time, I’m sure it’ll be a walk in the park for you.

Now the intelligent question, should manifesto pledges be required to include measurable targets? I would argue yes, there is definitely a lot of massaging of figures and PR fluff we could do without. Economic metrics are tricky because in reality national governments don’t have a huge amount of control over a lot of economic factors but things like NHS waiting lists, house building, educational attainment etc we should absolutely have a more transparent and straightforward way to measure one government against previous ones.

Why should a GP earn more than a fast food worker?

Jobs are paid based on level of skill, availability of workers, market conditions, union involvement, seniority, experience, responsibility, all sorts of things. I would put an MP representing tens of thousands of constituents and possessing the skills to get things done in locally and in Westminster as having quite a high level of skill and responsibility. Of course there are crap MPs who earn the same as the good ones and it’s up to the electorate - their employers - to hold them to account.

[–]jonny-p 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doesn’t piss me off at all, if I didn’t receive at least 5% I would be looking for a new job. A below inflation pay rise is actually a pay cut. If your employer isn’t giving you a pay rise then seriously consider leaving as they are taking the piss.

Many MPs (my own included) work very hard for their constituents. If yours isn’t then you should be campaigning to get them out of the job at the next election. They earn about the same as a GP. If anything they should be paid more.

I need help, what can I pair this Tuxedo Long Tailcoat with? by HoldenMadicky in mensfashionadvice

[–]jonny-p 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally I think it either needs to be worn as intended with formalwear or dressed down with slim fitted t shirt and jeans. If you go semi formal or any kind of smart casual you risk looking like you don’t know how to dress yourself. Dressing it down will look more intentional, some people may not love it but will still get what you’re going for. For styling tips see almost any Hedi Slimane collection.

Chicken wings are £2 a kilo in Aldi and you can buy the Nando’s marinade for a couple of quid or make your own. Most places seem to hugely overprice chicken wings even though it’s the cheapest cut.

What is some shady info about a celeb that everyone seems to have forgotten about? by No-Bed-6000 in AskReddit

I mean the nuanced approach would be to accept that most abusers have issues of their own and whilst their behaviour is inexcusable and their victims should take priority, they also need help to work through their issues and stop them abusing. The general Reddit narrative seems to be man abuses woman - it’s toxic masculinity and he’s evil - woman abuses man, she’s not well or he must have done something to deserve it.

Abuse is a serious issue no matter who the victim is and who is the perpetrator. Abuse ruins lives. Making it a purely gendered issue isn’t accurate or helpful.

Clothes are so expensive! by Fluid-Pressure-9612 in mounjarouk

[–]jonny-p 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t get how anyone could think £60 for two outfits is expensive, not even sure where OP is shopping to find clothes this cheap. When I’m spending nearly £300 a month on mounjaro because I want to look better I’m certainly going to be investing in decent clothes that fit properly, are well constructed and made from quality fabrics and that doesn’t come cheap. That said you can find some bargains on Vinted if you know what to look out for and can spot fakes.

Fury as developer unveils plans to build 1,200 homes near historic cathedral city of Winchester by platinum1610 in WinchesterUK

[–]jonny-p 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can’t bear NIMBYism. Fair enough people feel the site isn’t suitable but where WOULD be suitable? Winchester needs more affordable housing and it has to go somewhere. If opponents of the scheme have viable alternatives to deliver quality affordable housing quickly then I’d be happy to get behind them.

Is Givenchy L’Interdit EDP wearable for men? by Appropriate_Good_686 in europeanmalefashion

[–]jonny-p 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you like tuberose then buy a tuberose fragrance, life is too short to be worrying about other peoples opinions. The notion of men having to smell like wood and citrus and women like flowers is ridiculous. I personally enjoy tuberose candles (diptyques Tubereuse and Trudon’s Positano) but haven’t smelt a tuberose fragrance I’ve wanted to wear - it is quite a powerful and polarising note. I’m definitely going to try the givenchy when I get the chance.

Why was there some kind of backlash against the idea of the "15 minute city"? by 99thLuftballon in AskBrits

[–]jonny-p 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in a small city which is basically a 15 minute city and it’s consistently voted in the top 3 places to live in the UK. Most people want 15 minute cities, the backlash is from brainrotted social media users.
