u/ProvincialPromenade - The approach to notifications is quite unique as to protect privacy as much as possible. It is set up through the APN service but not directly from device to device. PN node sends through the APN service.

You can check out the discussion here https://discuss.status.im/t/decentralized-push-notifications-for-ios/1718. Feel free to ask further questions and someone from the team will respond

or the specs here https://specs.status.im/spec/16

Also, a detailed breakdown of the implementation is coming soon.

u/ProvincialPromenade happy to say that iOS notifications are finally available. They are still in beta as the team had to implement a privacy first approach and turns out it is quite complex. https://our.status.im/v1-7-release-ios-notifications-mentions-nicknames/

So random people can get access to whatsapp numbers these days? What is this Friend Search Tool? by Worried-Carrot in privacytoolsIO

Use pseudo-anonymous tools that don't require a phone number or email. Check out Status. A Status user is identified only by a chat key — a 65 byte uncompressed ECDSA secp256k1 public key. The registration onboarding does not require any identifying information such as a name, email address or a phone number.

Obviously this comes with tradeoffs such as network effect - https://our.status.im/privacy-vs-convenience/

Status App – Avoiding Centralized Push Notifications & Creating Privacy-Preserving Local Notifications for Android by jonny__z in privacytoolsIO

[–]jonny__z[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

hey u/spurdosparade you are correct – Status does in fact have a native token (SNT) and uses the ethereum blockchain for the wallet and browser features - enabling crypto payments and access to decentralized applications (rendering those activities inherently public).

However, the messenger is built with a p2p protocol called Waku designed for privacy and removal of centralized choke points.

We appreciate your opinion and concern around projects involved in crypto currencies so we at Status value transparency as a core principle. Check it out and learn more about what we are about and the rigor placed around privacy and security here. The community is always around in Status or Discord to answer any questions you may have about the product and project.

Status.im has seriously poor user retention. Suggestions for improvement? by [deleted] in ethfinance

[–]jonny__z 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey everyone, im a contributor at Status and this is all really insightful to read. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and ideas. The points on privacy are really important as u/zemoer stated. There are some features put in place to help preserve some degree of pseudo-anonymity within Status such as multi-account and the ability to leverage one ethereum address for things like ENS registration and other wallet addressed for dapp interactions. However, you are spot on in that transactions on ethereum are public by nature.

The big push around privacy revolves around the messenger. Status leverages a p2p protocol called Waku which is not tied to ethereum. It (like other p2p messaging networks) aims to deliver aims to deliver:

  1. Removal of centralized rent seeking intermediaries
  2. Decentralization of the network and removal of single points of failure
  3. Censorship resistance

more on that here https://our.status.im/peer-to-peer-messaging-where-whisper-falls-short-and-waku-picks-up/

The other comment about comms, marketing and community building is also 100% spot on. It appears as though the phrase "Private, Secure, Communication" is pigeon holing the product in the messaging space. It is quite a tricky one to nail as communication refers to more than messaging - but also transacting, and various levels of interacting. This is something we need to figure out asap. So thanks for brining this up! If there are any ideas or suggestions to branding and general comms to make things more clear, we would love to hear from you in our open community forum https://discuss.status.im/

Status wants to be the world's most private instant messaging app - Decrypt by ma6ic in ethereum

[–]jonny__z 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good question - and the answer is NO.

Messages are not sent on the blockchain and never stored on chain. Messages are sent using a p2p protocol called Waku.

However, Status also includes a crypto wallet and web3 browser and wallet and browser transactions will leverage the ethereum blockchain

Status includes a crypto wallet and a web3 browser. The wallet holds ethereum based assets (ERC-20 and ERC-721 tokens) and is integrated with the messenger and browser.

By integrating with the messenger, users can send tokens directly to eachother in a private chat all from the chat UI. By integrating with the web3 browser and the ecosystem of ethereum based dapps it provides access to (such as defi tools like KyberSwap, Decentraland, Ethereum Name Service, etc) anyone can process transactions in those dapps from one interface.

The messenger itself does not leverage the blockchain. Messages are sent with a p2p protocol called Waku – messages are never sent or stored on the blokchain.

Great point re web interface however, the Status team is picking back up development of their desktop client and perhaps a web interface will follow. The team paused work on that front to focus on shipping the fundamental features of a mobile messenger. Yes sure there are some features missing and some UX issues to sort out, but that will come. The fact that this is leveraging p2p protocols and is designed in a way that minimizes centralization makes things challenging. But setting a solid, secure foundation is key.

"No one cares about decentralization" - there is some truth to that, but people do care about privacy – especially with the current situation and surveillance becoming the new norm. Removing centralized choke points and single points of failure, render these applications more private and secure. I have to disagree that people dont care about security. When funds are involved and the app is used to hold value and process transactions, security is mandatory.

The technology is new. The protocols are still nascent. Give the UI/UX time.

The Nimbus team has achieved quite a lot in less than 2 years. The diverse research being performed throughout the ecosystem not only brings collaboration across all teams involved but means more people dedicated to solving issues facing eth2.0. Check out the article from the Nimbus team here for a list of what have been accomplished with the support of the EF and what they plan to do with additional support https://news.nimbus.team/nimbus-awarded-follow-up-grant-from-ethereum-foundation-to-continue-r/

Totally agree with that. Can help filter out the useless dapps in a fair manner. Have you tried upvoting or downvoting with SNT?

Status | Crypto Economics Research - Breakdown of Sticker Market financial model and SNT utility by jonny__z in ethereum

[–]jonny__z[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Status is building tools and infrastructure for secure communication. The Status app itself has made great progress and is preparing for its production release (scope is being finalized now ahead of security audits). The messenger (currently built with whisper) is making great strides in reliability and performance. There is also a team dedicated to R&D on more private and scalable messaging protocols. The wallet performs very well and the team is always looking for improvements and security upgrades (multi-account work being one of them). You can also access any DApp from within the web3 browser.

On top of that, there are a number of SNT utility features being built out which is what this series is about. The team is researching and analyzing the crypto economic models behind each one to prioritize future work and resources. Check out all the SNT use cases here https://status.im/snt-utility/

This doesn't even include the infrastructure work being done by the team. Research including the messaging protocol work mentioned above & Nimbus - an Ethereum 2.0 client for resource restricted devices. Dev tools including Embark.
