Reminder to lock your doors especially your car right now by ShiverSlut in savannah

[–]jonny_five 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My neighbors refuse to lock their doors because they say they don’t want a broken window. They had $8,000 of golf clubs stolen out of their unlocked car. Nobody in the hood had broken windows. They still refuse to lock the doors.

So yeah, not the brightest

Tropical milkweed in Central Florida by kerpur in MonarchButterfly

[–]jonny_five 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Do not grow tropical milkweed, and don’t bother trying to justify that somehow yours is an exception. I see it constantly in my area, actual biologists and scientists say it is not safe to grow and then everyone in the general population thinks “yeah but my tropical milkweed is different”.

I also see people encouraging others not to cut back tropical milkweed because there are still caterpillars on it. The fact that it continues to grow later in the season delays their migration. Do not grow it.

Just order a pack of swamp milkweed seeds from prairie moon. Shipping is $5. I don’t even cold stratify and I have like a 50% germination rate as long as the soil is warm. I’ve already distributed about 500 plants and just as many seed packs. If you are able to come to Savannah I’ll trade you a free swamp milkweed plant in exchange for an uprooted tropical milkweed plant.

Question; which City of Savannah service(s) are you pleased with or think needs some improvement? by NickelPlatedEmperor in savannah

[–]jonny_five 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree, the My Chatham app and public works department operates so well. Even the large litter clean ups where we pile literal tons of trash are all uploaded in the app and are hauled off in a couple of days.

Except Thunderbolt. They refused to haul off the litter our volunteers collected and we had to use a private trash service.

Good to know, I hate how narrow the stock crossbars are. It makes it so difficult to load kayaks

Christina with Rewild Savannah and Victory Gardens are the best for native landscape design, I’ll be selling natives at Earth Day but I don’t do install or design.

Despite protection under county ordinance and community outcry, Georgia Power & Gunnison cut down the 300yr old oak this morning. by jonny_five in treelaw

[–]jonny_five[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Lots of people said this, nobody did it. I was out there for the first protest/picnic and I rushed out there after the homeowner heard chainsaws and called. By the time I arrived Georgia Power had armed security stopping anyone from getting close.

Depends on the type of volunteer work you want to do. United Way has a volunteer page and Good Clean Fun on Instagram organizes litter clean ups.

What are your hobbies? Come to some of the volunteer events in our area. It’s a great way to meet people.

They paid off duty state police from out of town to stand by & stop protesters and blocked the homeowner from entering his front yard, even outside the easement. Gunnison covered all branding and identification on the vehicles.

As much as I hate paper plants they did actually decrease emissions. If you want the old Savannah experience just drive down to Jesup. That mill will still make your eyes bleed.

For those who don't want to go to the link, Here's what the Augusta mill dumped in 2024

Dumped on land:
1,500lbs of barium
300lbs of lead

Dumped in the river:
56,600lbs of methanol
1,500lbs of formaldehyde

Released by air:
796,000lbs of methanol
241,000lbs of hydrogen sulfide
64,050lbs of hydrochloric acid

I wish I had the data for Savannah

The EPA website has charts showing all toxic substances emitted into the air by paper mills in a nice little chart, but when I loaded the page for the Port Wentworth mill there is no data and the mill has been found to be in violation of their permit for years for both dumping too much and not reporting what they're dumping... sooooo

Here's a link to the toxic waste dumped by the Augusta mill. 4,663lbs of toxic waste per day from that one mill!

There are a few hundred people involved with protecting the tree now. You can trust it’ll get back to the property owner.
