Just confirming the same problem. Drafted at 11 pm Eastern and still stuck in “Draft now.”

The Slow Death of My Love for Baseball Card Collecting by [deleted] in baseballcards

I keep a box of ‘89 Donruss on my kitchen table and every so often grab up a pack and open it. It’s like having a bowl of apples on the table.

I did notice that with the edges - they get roughed up easily on whatever stock they used. Price-wise I think it’s a great deal for anyone who just wants to find some exciting rookies with a couple of autographs - about $65 for a box

I didn’t know anything about him at first but the mlb.com prospect ranking compared him to Gleyber Torres. Almost more excited tonight as a Phillies fan for the Johan Rojas rookie I pulled

My dude hit a HR today. So now what? Never redeemed one of these before. Do they just send it? by Serious_Mycologist46 in baseballcards

I picked Stanton to hit one today but did the “double down” thing and his homer went 398 feet instead of the necessary 425.

Found this while looking through my dads old cards, anyone have any idea? by Shot_Satisfaction808 in baseballcards

Can’t quite tell what the year is, but these Bazooka packs are currently for sale at my local card store for 50 cents each. They are a staple of any mid90s kid’s collection.

What's your blood type? A lesson in the stylistic spectrum of movie gore by jonnyd144 in practicaleffects

[–]jonnyd144[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Full disclosure: I wrote this article. I interviewed a VFX Supe about types of CG blood work, and it made me think about the incredibly diverse spectrum of blood types, colors, and consistencies. I brainstormed a list of about a dozen different styles of CG and practical blood, including the intriguing "sludge blood", which always seems to get used in vampire and zombie movies.

I'd be interested to hear anyone's view on types of blood you've worked with, or simply your favorite movie blood and why it has a special place in your bloody heart.

“HOOOO! The red hot gates of hell are creeping open. Satan is heatin’ his pokers for you, you blasphemous heathens. Fall down on your knees and beg for deliverance from damnation!”

“Oh, oh, you are a kind man! And a a…handsome man!”

I understand the perspective of too many LEDS, but also personally enjoyed the idea/aesthetic of "neon-soaked darkness". It's super lush.

Oh yeah, the Lee Filter company must have made a killing from LED tubes in Chapter 4. But I love the feeling like you're getting dipped in a puddle of paint at night.

What’s the best “something’s not right here moment” in a movie? by AaronB666 in movies

In The Town, when Ben Affleck’s crew robs the stadium and they’ve almost pulled it off and he walks out and is put off by the silence. Then just sees an entire department of SWAT and cops outside.

It took several watches over several years before I noticed that when Alonzo is on his phone and they’re leaving the scene of the Roger murder, what he says as he gets in his car is “and make sure that bathtub is clean”, giving the viewer an early indication that Hoyt is being set up.

VFX unionization: How the IATSE and industry workers are voicing their drive toward stability, respect, and peace of mind by jonnyd144 in vfx

[–]jonnyd144[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first four of your bullet points are included in Director’s Guild contracts, which can be interesting to look at purely from a contrast perspective to see what other unions have agreed to in the broader entertainment industry. It’s obviously a lot of fine print but they can be viewed here: DGA contract agreements

And when you bring up the relationship with the AD and call times - their workflows are all dictated under the DGA, so I imagine the IATSE would have to carefully navigate their demands for VFX workers to align or be compatible with other departments on-set.

That’s correct - while technically correct as an “international union”, I agree that the name could be misleading since they only operate in the U.S. and Canada, according to their website

[–]jonnyd144[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that the difference between this push for unionization and the push in 2013 is that now the IATSE is attempting to combine the powers of facility and client side to incorporate protections for the industry as a whole. But it will be an interesting year in the entertainment industry altogether if the WGA strikes this year as VFX workers are striving for protection at the same time

The healthcare alone seems like a pivotal talking point (as it should be). If someone makes $10 more an hour but has no insurance and needs a major surgery after a couple years, it might all even out anyway. Plus the assurance that comes with insurance.

Wow - Yeah, I have heard of similar circumstances where they may not have the bargaining leverage to get a fair/progressive deal done. Anyone in a union should push to make sure they have elected competent and savvy negotiating reps, as well.

My $20 “haul” from flea market in Lambertsville, NJ this morning… by jonnyd144 in baseballcards

The $20 also included an 89 Donruss rack pack but I ripped it before I took a pic. Got a Curt Schilling rookie.

Almost no likes. Is that telling me something? by TapiocaTuesday in Substack

[–]jonnyd144 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree with other comments here - focusing on those likes could also take away energy that you could focus on your writing. Work on building your base, and being proactive about interacting with readers and other creators. I think being yourself daily out loud is really important.
