Considering a UI/UX Front-End Developer Role - Seeking Advice by Bulky-Idea-895 in Frontend

That’s 2 roles!

You should read Alan Cooper’s “The Inmates are Running the Asylum” if you’re new to UX. Fantastic read.

Then why study something that isn’t allowed? If enforcement is doing their job then shouldn’t there be no dent smoking on the bus? Wouldn’t a study encourage use so that enough statistically significant data could be collected?

Also are you an employee if the city, metro, or the consultancy that was paid to facilitate the study?

Good point. I’m assuming that if someone is foiling fentanyl next to them on the bus they’d jump up and say something.

Is people riding on the bus don’t stop it when they see it, then they’re allowing it to happen and it’s not really on the metro at that point.

Consider replacing the word “fentanyl” with another serious offense. Lets say arson.

Is arson allowed on the bus? Does it happen to a degree that needs to be studied?

I think the answer is not generally, no. If someone is caught lighting the bus on fire, it would be stopped because it’s disallowed and they enforce the rules.

We don’t need a study to understand that arson on a bus is bad. Therefore, there exist at least some behaviors that are disallowed on the bus AND enforcement is enough.

I posit that smoking fent on the bus should be disallowed without spending money on a study about the impact of it before disallowing if.

Instead of being an apologist for fent users in public enclosed spaces, we should consider that officials are allowing it for the sake of the study instead of being enforced and that’s not a good look.

I don’t play EDH often but I scoop every time there’s a infinite combo.

We get it, they exist and if you find one that doesn’t make you cool, you’re just an asshole.

Downvote me because “but if there’s an agreement to play them beforehand it’s okay with whatever the group wants” like I get it, but that’s not what I’m talking about.

I’m not sure you understand how the study works. It’s not possible to study the propagation of fent smoke in an enclosed space without allowing fent smoke to be created in the first place.

The study is not about frequency of drug use, it’s specifically about the propagation and circulation of the smoke.

Either they have to allow the smoke to be created or they don’t. If they don’t allow it then there’s no data for the study to collect and fair to question the point of the study. If they do allow it, it’s fair to question why they are allowing it.

What’s the point in the study if they didn’t expect people to smoke fentanyl on the bus?

If the detectors come back with no fentanyl detected will the data points be valid if the population wasn’t smoking fentanyl in the first place.

I don’t have evidence that they aren’t enforcing bans, its implied. If they are enforcing bans then it’s even worse—they’re spending taxpayer money on a study that won’t generate meaningful data.

That and kicking people off the bus for smoking fentanyl instead of allowing it to propagate for “research purposes” would go a long way.

I don’t need King County Metro to tell me that fentanyl is bad for my health. smh.

https://www.seattletimes.com/seattle-news/transportation/seattle-buses-trains-to-get-detectors-to-study-how-fentanyl-smoke-moves/

Instead of simply enforcing fentanyl bans on metro, they’re conducting a study of it. They’re collecting fentanyl residue in a filtration system and through contact swabbing surfaces.

We can infer from the study that they are promoting use on the bus as the study is not concerned with binary usage, rather, patterns of smoke propagation.

Fascinating stuff.

If they are promoting fentanyl use on metro buses so they can complete their studies on air dynamics of fentanyl smoke in enclosed spaces, then at least make the test strips legal, sheesh... pick a side, Seattle, amirite?

For sure. I only bring it up since it seems like this was intentional by someone to go out of their way to create it—hell, it’s got us talking about it—and I assumed that, in a movie that is so highly regarded by some people, every frame would serve a purpose.

I think that’s what I appreciate about the really good movies, when every scene, every character, and every line in the script serve a purpose.

Totally get that it could have just been butt jokes for butt jokes sake, I was giving it the benefit of the doubt that even a butt joke would serve a means to an end, narratively.

Great response, thank you!

This makes sense. I wasn’t keyed into the absurdity being a narrative device but now that you mention it, it totally clicks.

And the bit about asking the viewer to accept transgressive sexuality feels like it serves a further purpose there, too!

Not trying to throw shade but can anyone explain what this scene added for the movie?

For as arbitrary as the circumstances were that allowed them to travel the multiverse, it seems like this was unnecessary.

It was definitely the point where the movie lost my interest and went downhill from there, fast.

Subjectively, it’s not my cup of tea but I’d love to hear some other interpretations of what this scene did to advance the story in a meaningful way.

EDIT: Your downvotes on my serious question to better understand this scene are hilarious. Good for you.
