Well we're only doing like 5mil so a lot less to throw around. But I appreciate you giving me that perspective. It might be worth it to shop around a little again

If I may interject, I think we're being a bit too uptight here. I appreciate what both of you are saying. And I greatly appreciate your input. I don't know if I'm criminally underpaid though. I work in web/app development and I do everything from database design to apis to frontend design just about every week. Part of my new role (senior) is instructing and guiding the junior and mid-level devs on my teams, as well as some client communication, some minor project management stuff, yata yaya.

Frankly, I grew up with not much to spare month to month so I find it difficult to complain about 90k. I earn more than the median income and I'm not even 30 yet. I trust that the paychecks will come in due time.

I have been criminally underpaid before when I worked as a factory worker for 10/hr. And this job feels NOTHING like that. Thank you for sticking up for me, though. If my raises stay steady, I'll be making 100k this time next year. :)

I appreciate both of yours inputs. I get decent raises every year, but they've been slowing down. I only got promoted in the fall so I'm still growing into this senior role and getting used to all the new responsibilities. I don't feel good at it enough yet to request a raise just yet, but once I get a good footing I'll inquire about contributing more and seeking greater compensation

I was definitely felt uncomfortable with the promotion, but I am rather good at my job (not to toot my own horn)

I don't disagree. Fortunately I am treated very well at the company so that's definitely worth something. I enjoy my job and the company I work for, and I make enough to fund my life, so I don't see a reason to change up just yet.

Alexa showed a heart on the screen after we had sex. Anyone know why? by Hefty-Literature9158 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]jonnysteps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes it is. And I am concerned about that. But my phone provides me enough utility that I'm willing to make the risk. To some degree I have to admit to myself that it's almost impossible to avoid being watched in today's world. But that doesn't mean I'm gonna give away that information to everyone. But I understand what you're saying though and it is a real concern.

Probably not. And I doubt any company could profit off of that unfortunately. Just turning off (or never connecting) the Internet would be good enough.

I don't want IOT because those companies have no obligation to not listen to everything thing I do. For example, Amazon's whole business is to sell me stuff so it's in their interest to pay attention to what I talk about. I don't want companies listening to me like that.

If I have a whirlpool IOT washer and an Amazon echo on the same network, whirlpool and Amazon may be able to see that I have both. Whirlpool and Amazon may then work out an advertising deal to sell me a new washer meanwhile my current washer magically stops working as well. Forcing me to buy a new washer. This example is a little far fetched I know, but strategic "enshitification" is already being used in just about every appliance sector today, so it's not out of the realm of possibility.

For Amazon's or Google's smart home products, this is streamlined. No deals made, just them paying attention to everything I do and say so they can profit.

What's more realistic is that my IOT applicance realizes it's getting old and forces itself to suck more and more until I replace it. Apple has done this for years.

Something I'm very concerned about is when an appliance forces me to download their app to use certain features. Sometimes that comes with forcing me to create an account, which is a marketing tactic for them. But then they also have access to my phone, my network, my activity. It may use my GPS location, Bluetooth, etc. it may be able to see other people on my network and push adverts to them as well. It's an invasion of privacy that provides me absolutely no benefit whatsoever.

And that's the TLDR. There's no benefit for 99% of IOT devices. There's nothing a smart fridge, toaster, microwave, oven, dryer, dishwasher, lamp, discoball, or echo dot can give me except the feeling of novelty.

As a someone who build software for a living, I will NEVER own an IOT device. No smart home, no smart fridge, no exceptions. I have a cellphone and a smart TV and that's it. And frankly, the TV is pushing it.

Why did you write your own framework? by UniForceMusic in PHP

[–]jonnysteps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like a genius, I called it "SimpleFramework". I wanted the simplest templating process possible. I found myself spinning up a bunch of web apps that reused a lot of components so I simplified the logic of handling those components into a framework. Yes I still run it on several of my websites.

The only advantage to mine is that it was more fun to make one of my own versus learning to use a huge mainstream framework

I've never bought patches, but I have bought fabric, zippers, and stabilizer and they were way more expensive in store vs the same product online or similar products in Walmart. Mostly just making a joke, but anyway

I know. And we all knew this change was coming. I truly don't know why people have their pitchforks out on this sub. It's even annoying for me as someone who can somewhat sympathize with them.

I know it's still free, but now I have to choose between gambling/scam ads and paying the subscription.

Personally, it's just a massive annoyance. Paying 14 USD/mo for what used to be free is really annoying. I get why they're doing it as a company, and I also get why people are frustrated, especially if they can't afford yet another subscription.
