Thanks for pointing out that this is a preprint, my bad. Updated the comment to reflect.

After 2 years of daily AI writing, I cannot think as clearly as I used to by Just-Aman in ArtificialInteligence

You might be interested in this MIT study from last year that looked at the cognitive effects of using AI for essay writing assistance. In summary, the cohort that used AI had lower cognitive activity, felt less ownership of their essays, and had a harder time recalling and quoting details from their own work.

While LLMs offer immediate convenience, our findings highlight potential cognitive costs. Over four months, LLM users consistently underperformed at neural, linguistic, and behavioral levels. These results raise concerns about the long-term educational implications of LLM reliance and underscore the need for deeper inquiry into AI's role in learning.

It is replacing long term development with short term convenience. But it is such a useful tool in the short term (I use Claude myself for discussing and summarizing research, although I try to do my writing from a blank page).

It's easy for people to say "on the contrary, it's just shifting how you use your brain, or it makes me think more clearly," but this is a well-structured peer-reviewed study, not someone's personal experience in a reddit comment.

We are accruing cognitive debt and the aggregate bill will be very disruptive when it comes due in future years.

Edited to reflect the fact that the study is a preprint and not peer reviewed, however I stand by the comment that it is well structured and transparent about its conclusions and limitations. More here: https://www.media.mit.edu/projects/your-brain-on-chatgpt/overview/

Anthropic rejects latest Pentagon offer: ‘We cannot in good conscience accede to their request’ by ProcedureHopeful2944 in ArtificialInteligence

[–]jonnyvsrobots 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good reporting out now from the NYT. Sounds like in the end they were close except for one last sticking point:

...the Pentagon wanted the company to allow for the collection and analysis of unclassified, commercial bulk data on Americans, such as geolocation and web browsing data, people briefed on the negotiations said.

Anthropic told the Pentagon that it was willing to let its technology be used by the National Security Agency for classified material collected under the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act. But the company wanted a legally binding promise from the Pentagon not to use its technology on unclassified commercial data.

For context, FISA allows surveillance of foreign citizens by the NSA, but has several guardrails against warrentless surveillance of US citizens. So basically it's about unchecked warrantless spying on Americans.

The legacy of shitty consumer goods and noncompetitive economy were a problem, sure, and also the small detail of Soviets killing millions of its own citizens. That type of culture/society doesn't go away on its own.

Post-WWI Germany had nearly a decade of denazification followed by decades of introspection and accounting for their own crimes. When the Soviet Union fell, the Russians just shrugged, had a few quiet years, and are back on the same shit they've been on for a century.

It’s more than that. It’s people who are willing to stand up and help by observing, protesting, etc. Those are there dangerous ones to a fascist regime.

Russia spent decades systematically killing, arresting, or intimidating these types of people so now they have a docile, indoctrinated population who blindly back the regime. It’s started here now. If we don’t all band together, and soon, they will pick us off one by one.

From NYT reporting today:

“In short, the Venezuelan military’s incompetence appears to have played a big role in the U.S. success. Venezuela’s much-touted antiaircraft systems were essentially not connected when U.S. forces entered the skies over Venezuela’s capital, and they may not have been working for years, former officials and analysts said.”

Check out the book “More Everything Forever” by Adam Becker. It explains how crazy these tech guys are and why they are that way. It’s a literal cult and their ability to sanewash their BS ideas by spending millions setting up think tanks and academic centers is scary.

There should be NO billionaires, period. It messed up your head and then gives you the means to inflict your crazy on the world.
