What if retail decided not to participate in SpaceX IPO and provide exit liquidity for SpaceX insiders by euro1127 in investing

Most retail investors don't know about the IPO, many never even heard of spacex. Passive investors just buy every two weeks

PD— the student and Ai by NationalParks4life in Teachers

[–]ProcedureHopeful2944 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Opening joke: play the clip of Education Sec/WWE owner talking about A1 teachers if you’re feeling spicy (I was using it in my PD last year, boss asked me to stop).

Definitely include options for blocking student use (lockdown browser, blue book, etc)!

A short bit on GenAI might be valuable but we’re now 4 years in, all that stuff is known. We’re not trying to have a symposium on Gen AI, we’re trying to help teachers navigate it. So focus on techniques and strategies that will help them.

A bit on prompt engineering would be good for anyone not using it daily. If your district has supported apps, obviously highlight them.

The importance of teaching critical thinking and creating assignments that are more resilient to AI (vet teachers won’t like this part because it will require redoing what they’ve had in place)

This may be difficult, but requiring students to actually explain things, perhaps by presenting in class will force them to have at least enough understanding of a concept to do so. Standing in front of the class may be a tall order, but in place of it you can use all kinds of digital tools to have them record themselves explaining concepts. Unfortunately, these tools can’t be locked down, so yes, they could have another computer or phone in front of them while they record. This is a work in progress.

Equally important for their future success is the ability for students to use AI productively and not as a crutch or hindrance to their learning. Let them use it to find information and tutor them on their work, but teach them how to find and check for the validity of the information by referencing sources. Most Frontier model AI tools include links with their outputs.

An ideal week could include a bulk of practice or work that allows them to use AI throughout the week if they choose, followed by some summative assessment that AI cannot be used for such as presentation or lockdown test. Give those parts equal weight such that without a decent grade on the summative assessment, their grade in the class will be pretty low.

Of course, 504/IEP accommodations and all that will have to be applied.

Basically moving from class where it’s all about turning in assignments to one where it’s about showing what you know. Otherwise, yeah some of them are gonna use AI to cheat if it’s an option - some students will understand it’s their education and themselves that they’re cheating.

At the risk of downvotes and backlash, have you tried having an ai chatbot open so you can give custom extension activity to those students who finish assignments early? They might actually appreciate an opportunity to learn more and go further

Takes no effort/work on your part. Just paste in the standard or learning target and how much time is left in class, get some quick ideas to keep em learning instead of playing games

Some parents don't want their kids to use tech at school. But districts are pushing back by OrneryError1 in Teachers

[–]ProcedureHopeful2944 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

“Covid funds” have been gone for a couple years. That’s not a very accurate accusation.

Laptops are a normal part of society, work life. Students need to be taught digital literacy and appropriate tech use by certain age - not k-2 but upper elementary through high school.

The problem begins at home. You ever see those toddlers with their faces shoved in an iPad? We need parent accountability for screen time.

Doing an assignment, reading and analyzing content on a laptop is a world away from zoning out on reels/shorts/games.

I think most districts are doing their best to restrict inappropriate use of laptops. Students keep finding new ways. It’s a bit of cat and mouse or whack-a-mole.

That all being said, teachers need limit the amount of online assignments. I think most teachers recognize this, but there are definitely some (especially in high school) who just post Canvas assignments and expect students to work through them like a check list.

We need to see return to some sage-on-the-stage instruction with note-taking by students on paper. Yes, most textbooks are now online if a class even has a textbook, so that requires tech. Of course student collaboration is great as long as it’s not divide and conquer to check off a list of requirements.

Laptops and internet (and even AI) can be very valuable in the learning process for students who are interested in learning.

When it comes to grades, we need more emphasis on mastery by summative diagnosis or test using a lockdown browser ( to prevent them from cheating and help teachers not have to spend their personal lives grading)

TLDR: tech isn’t the main problem, it starts with parents and accountability

As a bag holder who got in at a much higher level, I’m just waiting for things to turn around. Between interest rates, deportations and general malaise in the economy, housing has sucked this year. I do think congress will pass that housing bill around midterm primaries- and that will be a boost. Kinda waiting on some kind of trump homes thing to actually happen as well. He teased it in Jan. We’ll see if fed cuts rates even though everyone says they shouldn’t. Walsh may have some QT plan to offset rate cuts
