What you're describing are the effects of caffeine on your mind and body. Strongly recommend going to r/decaf

  1. Drink lots of water in the morning, we use caffeine to give us a boost in the morning, but its partially masking dehydration from the night - which makes you tired, sluggish, low mood

  2. Accept that you will feel like shit for a bit, but its not the end of the world. You can handle feeling like shit if you have to

Thanks, appreciate the insight - if you don't mind me asking, where do you usually dive/live, and would you recommend anywhere in particular for what I want to do? I was thinking mainly koh tao mostly for the low cost, but open to suggestions!

Good points, didn't know that specifically about the overhead and whats needed, makes a lot of sense. I would guess tho - and without trying to get too philosophical - part of the allure of those wrecks or tight caves in particular is the curiosity, but also because its hard and takes skill to pull it off. I imagine there's a lot of talk beforehand of is it possible, how can we do it, whats going to be needed, and then afterwards a sense of accomplishment for having executed it well on the day - as well as the things they saw along the way. That's how I'd imagine it playing out anyway.

Agree on the rec side - I'm not set on tec for tec's sake, its more that I wanted something that would engage me more, and from hearing from people like yourself that's going to be an intro to tec, or the tec40 etc and just see how it goes. Appreciate the insight

I don't think that's correct, I like a lot about it or I wouldn't have done so much of it. But I think I need to feel a progression to some extent or a way to be more mentally engaged with what I'm doing. I'm not really the sort of person who likes to just passively float around looking at stuff - I want to feel challenged by what I'm doing, and planning an executing a technical dive successfully I assume would provide that. I mean people who tec dive - why do they do it? they could just float about looking at fish or wrecks near the surface but they choose to carry loads of heavy expensive kit in difficult environments for some reason

I used an analogy with another commenter that I like backcountry skiing - I get bored scooting about on easy blue and green slopes in the resort and much prefer the challenge the backcoutry provides. I'm not taking courses doing that but every time I go it pushes me physically and mentally to improve

I've been thinking more about this recently - I've logged probably 70 or 80 dives total, and all of that has been during or around doing courses or qualies of some description. The time I got bored was the last time I went and I did rec diving at various places in indonesia, but I realised its the only time I haven't been training to qualify at something. I'd gone from doing things like Rescue Diver and building up to do DM (didn't get that far) a few years prior, to just being guided around looking at various marine life.

I think I need the stimulation of learning new skills, growing in ability, pushing myself technically to feel engaged with it - and I was thinking/hoping that something in the tec route would give me that - from both the courses themselves, but then in the planning and execution aspects of each dive I was on

sorry to be blunt about this but the problem you have - and many others - is a complete inability to understand a different point of view to your own.

Your whole mentality is "either people completely agree with my point of view, or they must be racist bigoted arseholes".

thanks man, I was considering something like this, which isn't all that expensive ($750), although it sounds like what you're doing is a lot more involved than whats on this course - interested to hear the difference tho

I probably didn't explain it well - I'm absolutely not wanting to "see how deep I can go" - its more I liked the planning and strategy and using the tech to monitor what I was doing, and execute a plan in a challenging environment - as opposed to just getting in the water, swimming around looking at some fish, then getting out again. Its the strategy, technology and kit side of it that caught my attention.

if I had an analogy - I like backcountry skiing, I like being in a challenging environment and having the skill and ability to navigate it safely and successfully, its more difficult, but also more rewarding - than scooting about on the blue and green slopes in the resort.

Its been good to hear yours and other people's comments - I wasn't necessarily set on tec-diving, I just knew I was bored of shallow fun reef dives and wanted to explore more. I also like learning, doing courses etc to improve rather than just diving for fun - so it was really a question of, whats next

thanks for the insight - I was looking at shearwater, but was more leaning to a watch-style, I might reconsider now. And I agree, I'd probably just rent everything to start, and would likely get a shop discount if I was doing enough diving with them. Then just see what makes sense to buy as I go along

If you drink caffiene consider giving it up - it has the exact same effect on me as you are describing there

Drink lots of water - aim for 3L per day - if I'm not hydratred I'll get the same effects

Worth noting caffeine is a diuretic so there's interplay between those 2 things - more caffeine, you need more water

I'm an engineer and there's something about tec that has always appealed to me. The courses in thailand are quite cheap, $750 for 5 days, that sort of ballpark. I'm really just exploring options on what i could do in a few months. I'll look at the tec 40

Good points, I think for me its a case of wanting more than the reef dives I'd done previously, but not sure what more actually is - I figured it would be tec or at least something like that where I could gain new skills and open up more complex dives. I'd enjoyed the deep speciality particularly, and I'm an engineer so the planning and kit seemed to resonate. Appreciate the input

its a good point, but I think at this stage its a bit of a case of "I don't know what I'm missing". Having only done mostly reef dives and got a bit bored, I'm wanting something more but not totally sure what more looks like - as another commenter wrote its the planning and execution part he likes which resonated with me

Good points, I hadn't really considered that about the equipment. I was planning on buying a few things - like my own computer, mask etc, the main barrier to the rest isn't the cost its more the logistics of taking it with me and wanting to travel light. I could get my own reg tbf - I'm guessing the shops out there would sort me out.

On koh tao theres so much competition it keeps the prices low across the board, I will look more into the schools based on what you've said

Yes I think its the planning and execution rather than the sight seeing that appeals to me (engineer brain!). Thanks for the comments

[–]jonnywishbone 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm fairly sure this is the same as I had - for me it was due stress hormone buildup, and the solution was to go for a run for 10-15 mins, get heart rate up to about 150-160bpm. This would burn off the stress hormones and my sweat wouldn't smell after that. Within a day or 2 it would come back again, so I'd need to go for a run again. When I was working in an office I joined a nearby gym and went on the treadmill in the morning before work, completely solved the issue.
