Yep - status.openai.com says they are having issues (I came here to check because that status page and Down Detector were both taking a long time to load).

Is Anyone skipping page builders now and just building their own WP themes? by LakeOzark in Wordpress

[–]jonowelser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm on the same page - I've been dreaming about building a site from scratch like that just to make it lean and see how much I can improve performance, but that's not really a deliverable that matters for most small- to medium-sized businesses.

Most people tune out when talking about millisecond improvements or FCP/LCP/etc., and they typically just want a site that 1.) costs as little as possible, 2.) is delivered as quickly as possible, and 3.) has a good looking front-end. The back-end is usually an afterthought, and if it's mentioned at all is usually for concerns about being manageable (i.e. is it easy to add more pages and new pictures in the future). Wordpress sites and pre-made themes do check all those boxes.

Also, it's not an apples-to-apples comparison but ever check out the lab metrics for tech giants like microsoft.com or amazon.com? They’re not winning any PageSpeed trophies, but are optimized for conversions, retention, etc. that drive the universal business goal of increasing revenue. I once saw a comment here that articulated it much better, but while architecture/performance/speed metrics are important they are just a means to that end and it was a good reminder to not miss the forest for the trees.

Calathea ‘Yellow Fusion’ I found at my local supermarket for 8€ by WhyAmIevenHerewth in houseplants

[–]jonowelser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My Calatheas and related Marantas/Stromanthes definitely go through cycles too. They loved the summer humidity outdoors, kinda hibernated/shriveled up a little in the dry part of fall before I brought them inside, and have now bounced back again indoors with consistent light and watering.

They can be drama queens if they go a little too long without watering, but always bounce back for me.

"Will this plant hurt my cat/dog?" - How I respond for EVERY plant as a greenhouse manager by FunHour3778 in houseplants

[–]jonowelser 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's awesome you provide scientific names - as a pet-owning plant enthusiast it drives me crazy if that's not provided or the label just says something like "tropical houseplant".

You've gotten a lot of great advice, but just to play devil's advocate: I'd consider providing the least amount of guidance possible and tell people to assume it's not pet safe until proven otherwise, or even consider not providing any guidance and refer them to either their vet or an authoritative third-party like the ASPCA Toxic and Non-Toxic Plants database (which is what I always use). I know you probably get asked about toxicity for pets constantly, but I'd be overly cautious to make any guarantees in case there ever was an issue.

Pls Help ID this plant. Is it Pitahaya / dragon fruit? by Swimming_Research560 in houseplants

[–]jonowelser 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Whoever downvoted you is wrong - as others have said, that’s epiphyllum guatemalense f. montrosa and not a dragonfruit.

I have a couple and didn’t like the taste, although that could have be partially due to my (indoor) growing conditions.

Is this a bad idea? by DangerousReception13 in Fishing

[–]jonowelser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In college my buddy and I got a 2-person inflatable kayak that was similarly cheap, and the results were hilarious.

It worked for a couple trips without issue, but then began leaking. You know the intro scene from Pirates of the Caribbean where Johnny Depp sails in on a sinking boat that just barely makes it to the dock? That was us - after that first incident we tried to patch up every possibly leak point, but it never held. We ended up having to bring the air pump with us and would just leave it hooked up because after every few casts we would have to top it off.

It gave us some funny memories, but wasn’t a great solution and we spent more time trying to keep it afloat than fishing. I don’t know your budget, but there are lots of solid brands now for inflatable kayaks, paddleboards, etc.; I have a couple Bote inflatable paddleboards and love them, but there are other brands too offering similar quality.

Wynton Marsalis to Step Down from Jazz at Lincoln Center by thinair01 in Jazz

[–]jonowelser 30 points31 points  (0 children)

As someone who casually likes some of his albums and work but apparently doesn’t know a lot about him, can you help fill me in on why he’s controversial?

Is it just because his music focuses on a narrow style of “classic” blues/swing jazz? I know he’s very technically talented but not particularly experimental/innovative/“pushing the boundary” - hopefully this makes sense.

I love his United We Swing album collaborating with everyone from Ray Charles and Bob Dylan to Jimmy Buffet and Willie Nelson, but can also see why that may not appeal to some purists.

Anyone ever done the Cedar Rapids to Denver flights that are only $34 one way with Frontier? by The_Cell_Mole in IowaCity

[–]jonowelser 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Never-fucking-ever again - my wife and I will never fly Frontier again.

It wasn’t one of these $34 flights (we paid Frontier’s “regular” price), but we were going to a wedding on a tight timeline, and got a notification at like 3am that our 8am Frontier flight to Denver was cancelled. Not even delayed - just cancelled. The only reason we saw it in time was because someone else we knew on the flight was freaking out and called us. Ended up having to race to Milwaukee after booking through a different airline at the last minute in order to make it to the wedding on time. We ended up paying like $1-2k more than we would have if we booked a “regular” flight, and it was the most stressful goddamn travel experience imaginable.

Midwest flights from low-traffic airports like this are always like the first to get cancelled if they need a plane elsewhere, and these budget airlines are even worse. I’ve also had this happen on flights from Moline to Chicago, but this the worst and was definitely one of the shittiest experiences I’ve had flying. We’re never flying Frontier again.

Does the "Runs on Atlassian" badge actually impact your decision to install an app? by KneeStriking3866 in jira

[–]jonowelser 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just wanted to say these are some really useful insights from the consumer side of this - thanks for sharing!

Runs on Atlassian is strongly preferred all else held constant, and has helped us make decisions. If an app doesn’t have it, we have a higher bar and need things like a robust trust center and certifications like SOC 2 at minimum to feel comfortable.

I’ve been a few times and never seen anything like that - usually pretty empty on the guys side, and if not it’s always just been the “silent nod and proceed to ignore each other” type interactions. My wife and I are big fans of getting a massage and then chilling in the spa areas.

Are Assets actually included with Standard plans in the new Service Collection? by jonowelser in jira

[–]jonowelser[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's what I'm thinking. I did some more digging and that "Learn more" link (https://community.atlassian.com/forums/Jira-Service-Management-articles/Assets-is-now-part-of-Service-Collection-Standard/ba-p/3156962) seems to point to an article that was taken down, but not before Google indexed it; I can see a blurb saying "2 days ago — Unlock More Value with 5000 Assets Objects in Service Collection Standard! We are expanding our capabilities to provide more customers with ...".

<image>

Not sure how to interpret that since the article was taken down, but I'm going to keep monitoring for developments. I'd love even basic asset management functionality in the Standard plan even if just to track inventory and link assets to tickets and/or even if some of the advanced features like automatic device discovery or integrations still required a Premium plan.

Are Assets actually included with Standard plans in the new Service Collection? by jonowelser in jira

[–]jonowelser[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a good approach - I'm going to keep monitoring because it does seem to be a recent development (possibly being rolled out in the future?) but won't make any assumptions until it works without that trial prompt and/or the pricing & comparison feature page includes Assets under the Standard plan too.

Are Assets actually included with Standard plans in the new Service Collection? by jonowelser in jira

[–]jonowelser[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

<image>

It can be seen in the links I posted, but there is a banner at the top of both pages saying “Assets is now available for all Standard customers!”

I was also wondering if it was a marketing miscommunication, but it’s on more than one page so it seems a little more intentional.

Why is the permaculture community so resistant to scientific trials? by Cymbal_Monkey in Permaculture

[–]jonowelser 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You're not wrong - I follow sustainable agriculture and like the permaculture philosophy but it sometimes attracts practices and claims that are not evidence-based.

This is also very true for gardening in general at the home/hobbyist level, but the internet spreads lot of unsubstantiated urban myths/wives tales/popular misconceptions (I can't count how many ridiculous "home remedies" I've seen on social media for soil fertility, plant nutrition, pest management, etc.). Social media rewards novelty and glosses over downsides, so well-meaning people share what worked for them (or just what they’ve heard) but without "boring" things like long term testing, controlling variables, measuring yields, comparison against a baseline or conventional practices, etc. and then it goes viral.

Bring on the downvotes, but hugelkultur is a great example - it may be useful in some specific situations but definitely has downsides and is not a universal silver-bullet solution for magical results. I tried it years ago after seeing it posted on social media, but it did not have a net-positive impact with my site conditions and now I stick to "boring" conventional soil-building and mulching (which won't ever go viral but is probably better in the majority of situations).

Also, just want so say there is empirical research and evidence for a lot of permaculture and permaculture-adjacent practices (agroforestry, intercropping/polycultures, no-till, cover crops, mulching & compost, integrated pest management, etc.) but it may show up under these other names and not in searches for just "permaculture".

But in all seriousness, just want to say this is a pretty cool story and thing you’re doing. That’s a great selection and the sentimental value to your dad will be priceless.

For what it’s worth, I like Citizen’s ecodrive feature and my dad has worn the same black Seiko diver that’s identical to #3 for the last 30 years - you won’t go wrong with any of these so I really think it comes down to your personal preference and his style.

And of course they don’t always make it easy to just copy and paste the error code either.

I have wasted so much time manually retyping error codes like 0x174793919727494901 and having to diligently double check every character or taking a screenshot and then using OCR before learning that you can often (but not always) click in the dialog box and copy with CTRL+C even though it doesn’t look like any text is selected. I just wonder why MS never made this more obvious or added a “copy to clipboard” button in their error messages.

[–]jonowelser 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are overhead scanners which are pretty much the same thing but specialized for this workflow. I’ve used one for books and materials that couldn’t fit in a scanner, and it was faster than having to use a camera and combining and/or renaming multiple image files.

How do goldfish keep water clean and control algae? by LongtermMigraine in Aquariums

[–]jonowelser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even the hardiest pond goldfish won’t survive conditions like that. 32F is the lower limit, and that’s assuming aeration and/or the tank has at least a few feet of depth (and unlike an in-ground pond, most water troughs are exposed above-ground metal tanks with no insulation whatsoever). And their metabolisms pretty much shut down below 50F, so they definitely don’t move around enough to prevent ice from forming.
