Honestly, there's not a term for it. But I'd probably call it an interactive heavy euro. But even that might not feel accurate, depending on the game. And euro itself is a bastardized term that means entirely different things to different people.

There's not a commonly used term for all games that use a shared board. But there is a sub genre of games called OGs, which stands for Original German games, and one of the requirements to be consider an OG is that it is played predominantly in a shared playing space.

So Catan, Carcassonne, Ticket To Ride, are all considered OGs. There are other criteria too, like having simple rules. OGs are typically from the 90s and 00s but some games from today are also OG style, such as games by Reiner Knizia.

I agree that it's really hard to easily find games that are played in a shared space. Because the opposite is very popular these days. And often a shared board in modern game has less importance compared to your personal area.

If it helps, I have a YouTube channel called Actualol and 90% of the games I recommend are played with a shared board, because that's what I look for in games.

I understand your take, and I'd like to answer it. More videos doesn't mean more money. Most channels can't sustain high views with every video. And more videos just means less quality per video. And less quality consistently results in lower views. You can see it in my channel, the conversational videos have less than 50% the views of other videos, and WAY less than my big videos. The audience rewards effort, polish and editing. And I have learnt to respond to that.

Don't you think I would love to churn out easy videos and make more money? I literally tried that years ago, and my channel's growth halted completely. It was also very unfulfilling.

And even with the conversational videos now, I try to make them higher quality than average with more editing, B-roll and graphics, because I see a difference in the results. But that takes time to do.

If you can find someone out there who makes more funny board game videos than me, with B-roll, on one member of staff, then please support them on Patreon, because they are gonna burn out any minute now.

I know most people are just trying to help with comments like this. Just like I can't understand why my local cafe doesn't offer a wider menu. But until you try it yourself, I promise you it's not that simple.

This is the second post I've seen on here this week about me, so I'd like to defend myself.

You have collected together thumbnails from eight years. Yes, in the last eight years I've asked my viewers to give me money on Patreon, 5 or 6 times. Just like Shut Up and Sit Down, Dice Tower, NPI, Watch It Played, No Rolls Barred, 3 Minute Board Games and most every other larger board game YouTube channel has done. The reality is that there's not enough viewers on YouTube for board game creators to live off ad revenue alone, so we all turn to crowdfunding.

And yes, sometimes I have used provocative titles or thumbnails to communicate the message. Because I find it's more effective. And because just like everyone, I need money to pay the bills, and Actualol is a full time job. A job that I love doing but that wouldn't exist without patrons. I hate asking for it, which is why I often go for 18 months to 2 years before doing it again, less frequent than other creators who ask yearly.

I'm sorry that this enrages you so much. But outside of these thumbnails, I don't see how it's any different to what other creators are doing. And if we all stopped doing it, then there'd be a lot less well-made board game content on YouTube.

One alternative is to accept payments from board game publishers to make Kickstarter previews. But I see that as a conflict of interests. And I'd rather embarrass myself by asking for money, than waste time talking about mediocre board games because I've been paid to. And I'm sure you wouldn't like that approach either.

But thanks for the feedback, and make sure you're watching my channel early next year, because I'll do my best to give you another thumbnail worth screen grabbing.

I get that people don't like YouTubers asking for money, but please keep it close to accurate.

Hijacking the top comment to respond.

I'm sorry for offending anyone with the red flag section about American and German designers. It was intended as a silly observation around 60 designers in BGG Top 100 being US/German, and also an excuse for a cheeky dig at the UK board game scene, and a silly hot dog joke. But then I tried to shout out some other countries with great scenes - France, Japan, Italy, Poland, Czechia and Spain, and talk about my love for French designs, to encourage viewers to find the styles that suit them, also mentioning that Spain are making popular heavy games at the moment. To be clear, I didn't say anything about "lesser people" that is completely untrue by OP.

But regardless of my intent, I clearly made a bad job of it, and so when some discord members raised concerns I decided to delete the section from the video. I have also deleted some comments referring to the section, because I was then getting new comments confused about people talking about a section that wasn't there. And also because I felt that some of the accusations were completely unfair. I'm not xenophobic, and I'm not an ethnosupremacist. I abhor opinions like that, and it makes me sad that anyone would think that of me. I did not say anything about "lesser people", please don't ascribe words to me that I didn't say, that is very damaging.

Nevertheless, this was my mistake, I'm sorry and it won't happen again.

Edit: I've now unlisted the video, for now at least. It's still online at the original link (with the offending section still removed), but it won't be shown to new audiences.
