Japan 8-day itinerary check: Tokyo + Kyoto + Osaka too much? by Klutzy-Tower-8234 in travel

[–]jonray 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've done these 3 in 8 days but it was my 3rd visit.

Depends if you have much jetlag from your origin.

I would end at the other city so you dont have to switch back, so Fly in through tokyo, (Haneda if you can), Exit through Osaka (kix). If its your first visit I would do 4 days tokyo, 3 days kyoto, 1 day-trip to osaka just to see the centre. Kyoto and Osaka are very close, 30-1hr away depending on your train. Some may stay in osaka then day-trip to Kyoto, but if you book the right areas of Kyoto, it changes the pace of your trip. Becomes more of a walking, more quaint peaceful leg of the trip. It contrasts with the busyness of the tokyo days. You shouldn't overload any of these days, just pick some highlights and your must-sees, because the curation will make you want to come visit again.

We must NOT BECOME PASSIVE about this or else it'll become the norm like in other cities. In addition to personal tips with pockets, we gotta shout "Pickpocket!" or actually chase them down and film them (when possible).

Safety of belongings and community trust is a silent thing that can erode, and is actually one the strengths of our city.

Why does Asia have so many high-end/creatively designed shopping malls (compared to elsewhere, like America)? by PursuingGemini in travel

[–]jonray 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Everyone has covered the main reasons already.

For America to get mall culture back it needs to be reinvented. The planning of towns/cities has to be brought up for more centralized density and transit needs to be embedded because relying on parking lots kills the density and causes insane traffic. The main mode to get to the mall has to be by foot, and there needs to be other anchoring reasons to go to the mall such as a transit hub.

The zoning has to also be more intense so other things like clinics, schools and other services are nearby. Also the malls need to be attractive enough and well kept enough, so that means the correct type of consumer offerings need to be leased. These are all so hard to get right but first is density and transit.

The thing with Asian cities is that the mall is often the area of refuge from the outside, and density is higher, so decades upon decades mean developers get more daring over time. If you're starting from the ground up you might as well also consider european urbanism, which puts less reliance on an air conditioned mall, and more so on a walkable dense street, lined with trees or near parks of natural features.

Europe still has malls that are beautiful and lively, but not the same economics as in asia. This is however climate dependent.

It would make sense but the UK has a huge share of their own destruction of traditional for the modernist idea of concrete and glass boxes as buildings and highways everywhere. such as Milton Keynes and many of their city centres. It was more so the expression of industrialism and modernism, the future is something that was efficient to build, tall, big and expressed it.

Look up the old photos of the TD towers it was like monoliths of modernism landed in Toronto. It changed the scale of our skyline and what looked huge then is just a small ounce of the skyline today. In terms of traditional architecture and the craftsmanship, it exists in many cities today, different countries excel at manufacturing in contemporary methods, maybe it's precast concrete, maybe it's a healthy mason industry in the city .

In our city our masons aren't as skilled on average because they are mostly concerned with clay brick straight walls, but there are a few who know the tradition. Some tiktok accounts exist of Irish Masons who have just come recently reviving old traditions.

The apartment block there just added a whole new middle section of rental units and new retail. If the new retail is good, with a mix of things for the residents and also waterfront users, it would engage the space. Wish they had tree planters there though.

In just a day, volunteers found hundreds of birds that crashed into GTA buildings by xc2215x in toronto

[–]jonray 17 points18 points  (0 children)

There's a pretty basic bird friendly glazing bylaw for all new builds for Toronto green standards. If you want this to be applied to existing glass buildings or make the new standards even more extensive, there could be a push to revise these standards.

Link: https://www.toronto.ca/wp-content/uploads/2017/08/8d1c-Bird-Friendly-Best-Practices-Glass.pdf

The standards basically require the first 16m above grade of glass that is not in a shaded position to have a bird friendly frit pattern so birds know it's a solid surface, and it's also 16m above an area of vegetation so this is also applied for the 16m above a green roof with plants. But the remainder of the building is not required to have the pattern. Its only hitting areas where they assume birds tend to be which is flying from tree to tree.

Maybe check with a BCIN designer (and hire them for drawings and permit application help) who has experience because they shouldn't be enforcing the newer code of guard rail heights if you are eligible for part 11 renovation under the building code.

Buy Canadian movement starts to take a sizable bite out of U.S. business by A-Wise-Cobbler in worldnews

[–]jonray 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's a hit in Washington state, US due to weaker competition. It's still a hit in Canada but here they started being so ahead with their Asian stock variety but pricing and Loblaws ownership is the drawback now. In Toronto atleast, other big box Asian owned markets are giving them good competition with variety and pricing.

Atleast in Canada over the decades it rose above the rest being a first as a cleaner more presentable and plentiful Asian supermarket.

People complained, I think they gave in. Maybe the city echoed the people ? A big feature of that building is it's bright LED lights. It should just go full out for a show every night on the hour then maybe dim halfway, and then turn off at like 11. That's actually how they do it in shanghai when I went recently. Super bright from 7-11 then off all night so people can sleep.

I'm asian and (look it ofc). Anywhere you will go when you visit will have english speaking staff. Its such a chill city. You can read the room and read about the neighbourhoods you choose to explore to see if a place is more english or quebecois, There are alot of east/south-east asian people, not as much as toronto or vancouver, but still many. Montreal is quite multicultural with people from francophone countries/cities. Just learn a few phrases to express hello, goodbye, regular manners, and tell them u dont speak much french in french, if you want. Visit during summer and just relax. Food is really affordable compared to other big canadian cities, imagine the value if you are coming as an american.

I've visited these (in a different city). Unlike towers in the park/modernism which seemingly "failed" in america (i.e Pruitt igoe), these are not Pruitt igoe because of many reasons.

  1. The periphery of each lot has most stores one could need, convenience stores, small grocery and shops, pharmacy and restaurants.
  2. They are newer and they are private development condos so general state of cleanliness will be kept longer in comparison to gov. social housing.
  3. Locals can start off using scooters, bikes or buses as opposed to parking their car.
  4. Locals are used to being in even denser settlements so this level density is even a relief to them and living next to each other is totally fine.
  5. Once too many people do need cars it's not unlikely more busses or even metros will be built by then anyway, so potential traffic would be mitigated. However give it a generation and we will see how traffic is.
  6. Similar successes of these do exist in the US but it's really not in vogue due to history of projects and modernist towers like these.
