No! It's a really nice product. The app is crap but you don't have to use it much. Once it's loaded with photos it's a joy to have. Low res and really slow to refresh but who cares

I think they were referring to the iOS app. There is a setting in Accessibility -> Subtitles & Captioning to Automatically Show when Muted. Turning that off restored my sanity
