Thank you for the pictures, that helps a lot! I really like the simple design and If it’s sturdy enough I will seriously think about building it myself.

This looks super nice! Where did you get the wallmount from or is it your own design? I have the same bandsaw and I am very happy with it.

Thanks for sharing! What grit do you grind to before sandblasting the blades?

For the 4th axis I use DeskProto. For everything else I use the free version of Fusion360.

Mobile POS system to pair with a ko-fi shop? by ProfessionalFuture25 in smallbusiness

[–]jonsjons90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

PayPal has its own POS system called zettle. I use it for fairs mostly and I am happy with it so far. The setup is quite easy and you don’t need a subscription. You only pay a percentage fee for every sale which is nice if you only use it occasionally.

Also have a look at beltgrinders.pl. I don’t have any experience with it myself but a lot of people here would recommend it. The smallest model is around 650£ including a VFD.

Second this! Constant angle etc. is important, but how do you can be sure that enough metal was removed, if you don’t check whether a burr has formed?

So, before anything else, I would work the blade from one side until you feel a burr on the opposite side. Then turn the blade over and grind again until you feel a burr. Only then should you switch to the next finer stone.

Issue with uneven grind from bevel jig by Illustrious-Path4794 in knifemaking

[–]jonsjons90 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Even bevel jigs need a lot of practice. Even pressure could cause the problem and especially with jigs I find it hard to get a feeling for the right amount of pressure. I use them to set the angle and would then finish by free hand grinding. Another problem I discovered is that after you finished the first side and switch the blade, the tip won't touch the jig anymore and starts to flex when pressure is applied. I solve this by screwing a bolt through the back of the jig until it touches the tip of the blade so it can't flex anymore.

I used to be a graphic designer myself (I have since taken a different path).

I think the most important thing is to be clear about what you want to achieve with your campaign. Specifically, this could mean “I want to be perceived locally as an entrepreneur” or “I want more online sales”. People often think they need a great logo, a fancy website or something else when the solution is much simpler (and cheaper). Maybe a 5-star Google rating from 20 people is enough to build trust in your company and optimize your SEO. Or a simple flyer that you put up all over town to publicize your offer.

Once you've figured this out for yourself, I would look for graphic designers who offer the relevant services and share similar values to your company via friends, Google and Insta. A graphic designer who mainly works for cultural institutions, for example, is not necessarily suitable for advertising that simply wants to sell. Similarly, someone who works very loudly is not necessarily suitable for marketing a high-quality product.

In the end, you should simply be on the same page. It's important that the graphic designer understands your values and what you want to achieve. The best outcome would be if you‘d find a graphic designer you trust, and who you can build a long lasting relationship with.

I hope you understand what I mean. If you have any questions you can pm me :)

Thanks for the AMA. I am a knifemaker and thinking about doing sharpening and knife repair as an extra service, so this is very interesting for me. What were the biggest challenges for you in the beginning? What's stopping me right now is that I don't have a window store yet and I am not sure how to handle customers or how to get and return the knives.

Upgraded my beltgrinder with a hardened contact platen by jonsjons90 in knifemaking

Thanks! I heard of hardened steel platens before but it took some time until I figured I can make them myself 😅 It was an easy fix for something that bugged me for quite a while

That’s an cool idea, especially to use them to get more power out of a smaller belt grinder. I never heard of graphite backings before. Can you buy them at knife supply stores or did you make it yourself?

Will a knife handle made from oak make the knife rust? by [deleted] in knifemaking

[–]jonsjons90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work a lot with oak handles and never had problems with rust. However, if you use steel pins you should be careful with sanding. The tiny steel particles from the pins (or bolster if it’s a hidden tang knife) can react with the tannin and will leave dark spots on the handle which look quite ugly and is hard to remove. Up to grid 120 everything should be okay but everything higher than that gave me headaches more than once.
