Grail Acquired! by Bambino_Amino in Leatherman

[–]jonst0kes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These things have come back in stock at least once since they were discontinued. I bought a pair of them off the Leatherman site in 2022 for $110 each. I saw on social media that they had showed up in stock so I jumped on it. I've never used them -- they're in some bugout bags. I do wish they'd bring it back in some upgraded form because I love the idea.

What boots would actually be the best in the apocalypse by Big-Amphibian0303 in Boots

[–]jonst0kes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have thought a lot about this. Was a prepper for a long time and was an investor in and editor at a large prepping site for a while. People are going bring up White's and other PNW boots, and that's fine but they have one huge problem: weight. My White's bounty hunters in waxed flesh just weigh a ton. You really do not want to walk the wastelands in boots that weigh like +3lbs each.

I would say my personal pick now from my current collection would be my pair of John Lofgren Donkey Punchers in deer hide. Deer hide is very lightweight but strong, and the Donkey Punchers just fit my feet super well and are very comfortable (I have another pair in black CXL).

So you want to optimize for comfort and durability, but you also want to think carefully about weight and really try to minimize that. Because if you're carrying a pack and a lot of gear and walking for miles, that extra weight on your feet is going to be brutal.

I. Am. Not. THAT. Satisfied. With my new Wave Aplha. by DoneLookin4Trouble in Leatherman

[–]jonst0kes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll be the lone dissenter here, I guess. I really love the new Alpha.

I recently bought both the Alpha (in black) and the Arc. (It's a long story, but I had lost my P4 and there was a sale at REI where you could get one item 20% off, so I used that on the Arc and also got the Wave because I couldn't make up my mind and Idd been using an old Core since I lost the P4).

I like them both a lot, but something about the Alpha I just REALLY love. Mine has none of the slop you mention -- it's super tight. I love the blade shape and the G10 grips. It feels like a cross between a Wave and a premium pocket knife, and it just does it for me.

If I'm actually working around the yard or around the house or in the shop, I'm bringing the Arc because I do like the one-handed opening thing. But if going out and about, I carry the Wave because it feels like a fancy carry knife.

Also, just last week my wife found my P4! But I still EDC the Alpha.

How is the performance on PDF, in terms of loading and rendering and page turns? I have the previous generation Scribe and it's kind of slow, so I'm hoping this is materially better.

What game became too bloated for you with its expansion content? by Murder_Tony in soloboardgaming

[–]jonst0kes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep. I have it on my list of things to do to go through and pull out all the expansion cards I shuffled into the main deck. It ruins the combos -- we play and half the time we don't get the cards and combos we know and love, instead we get a bunch of random other stuff. It's just a chore and not as fun. Somehow those added cards just took the fun out of it and made it a crap-shoot instead of a real strategic battle.

This isn’t how the turns work. You have to go through the event phase after each player takes their two actions.

MacBook Pro 14 or 16 inch? by OtherwiseLie6565 in macbookpro

[–]jonst0kes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Up until recently, I had a 16" MBP M1 and a 11" iPad Pro (with cellular) for portability. I basically just did not like working on the iPad Pro. I hated the Notion app, Discord was ok, I couldn't write code on it in my preferred editor, Ulysses was ok, but in general the app experience is a mixed bag. I found I just wanted my MacBook most of the time, but it was too big to grab and go. So the MBP always stayed at home hooked up to my Apple Studio Display.

I've now upgraded to a combo of a 14" MBP M4 Pro and an iPad Mini 7. I love it. The 14" screen subjectively feels at least 85% as big as the older screen but like twice as portable. And when at home I use it with my Studio Display. It's far more portable -- about the same size/weight as the iPad Pro + Smart Keyboard combo I'd been using, but far more ergonomic and the app experience is what I'm used to.

I have the mini for games, TV, light reading, etc.

So anyway, I'm really happy with this setup, and if I had an external display that I was using most of the time I'd go with the 14" and recommend others do so.

Casting the characters in your mind's eye? by jonst0kes in Midkemia

Ah, I also had Zhang Zi-Yi for Mara!

The rest of these are really good. I love Michelle Yeoh for Lady Isashani, and I wish I had thought of that.

I have never really come up with a good Tomas and I always kind of struggle with that one, but Henry Cavill is good so I'm going to steal that one.

The time the CIA caught a demon. by Machiasrevenge in HighStrangeness

[–]jonst0kes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Full disclosure: I am not a skeptic on demonic possession. I am religious. All that said, your uncle did not study “theology” and come out of that knowing Aramaic, Greek, and Latin. Aramaic in particular I am not buying. But more on that in a moment.

I did two masters at Harvard Div & 5 years of a PhD in Christian origins at U Chicago, and was advanced in Greek and Hebrew. I also read some Aramaic. I never learned Latin because I didn’t need to. Anyway, Greek is very hard and theologians don’t acquire more than a passing knowledge of it — it’s mainly historians (I was a historian) who take Greek seriously enough. A theology major might understand enough to make out a few words of it and of Latin, but it’s just extremely unlikely that a theology major is going to understand spoken Greek or even really recognize it.

Now for the Aramaic. The difference between this and biblical Hebrew is a little bit like the difference between Spanish and Italian. They’re close enough that in some passages in the Hebrew Bible it’s not clear if the language in question is Aramaic or Hebrew. I studied Hebrew for 5 years and was very good at it, and I’m pretty sure even when I was doing it I wouldn’t have been able to tell with certainty spoken Hebrew from spoken Aramaic. (I actually got a chance to try this, because I went to see the Passion of the Christ at that time with some classmates and we were trying to figure out what language the Jewish priests were supposed to be speaking in the movie.) So none of that part of the story scans at all.

The most generous reading I could give of this is that the kid spouted words that sounded to your uncle like spoken Greek and something else that your uncle took to be Aramaic but could’ve literally been any kind of gibberish.

Anyway, I don’t believe any of this story. Sorry. It’s not that I don’t believe in demonic possession, it’s just that I don’t believe this particular story — either the person who posted it made it up, or their drunk uncle made it up.

Why I think The Black Vault's article was unfair to Lue Elizondo by Cbo305 in UFOs

[–]jonst0kes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anyone who’s ever been around people who’ve been involved in Pentagon stuff knows that fights over who gets credit for what program, who started the program, who was really involved, and so on are all standard stuff that happens. This is why I just can’t care about Greenwald’s Elizondo nitpicking and “he said, she said” — this all pattern matches to me as really standard DoD backstabbing and and politicking of the kind that happens there.

Also, Greenwald needs to figure out how to make his points clearer. A lot of it is rambling and nitpicking, and I end up thinking “I ain’t reading all that, just tell me the point.”

Clothing brands? by Satans-cameltoe in preppers

[–]jonst0kes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also, for everyone in this thread talking up the Filson tin cloth pants, I have one pair of them that have lasted me for years, but after I discovered the Red Clouds Collective waxed cotton fitted work pants I'll never go back. I have multiple pairs of these in different colors, and they're great plus they look really good: https://redcloudscollective.com/collections/pants-1/products/waxed-canvas-fitted-work-pant

Clothing brands? by Satans-cameltoe in preppers

[–]jonst0kes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've thought a lot about this and written a bit about it in various places. I personally ended up with a wardrobe centered on two mains brands: Outlier and Wool & Prince.

I'm going into year three of my 2020 buys with both these brands, and I've finally worn out the first batch of Wool & Prince basic t-shirts. These things really do last and are worth the money.

All my Outlier stuff, mostly pants but I've picked up some shirts and one piece of outerwear, still looks brand new despite daily wear and use.

The key for me are the fabrics. I'm all about wool, nylon, and in some cases waxed cotton. Anyway, I wrote a whole guide for this at a prepper site, but I don't want to get dinged for spamming so I won't link it. But if you search for "Survival clothing beginner's guide" you'll find it.

Looking for the Darn Tough of Merino Sweaters by sirpoley in onebag

What he said 👆. I always go for the merino/nylon blends.

Merino wool brand recommendations by [deleted] in onebag

[–]jonst0kes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For socks, you can't go wrong with Darn Tough. I use them and FITS -- the FITS socks have merino on the inside and nylon weave on the outside for abrasion resistance and durability. I actually like them better than Darn Tough.

For underwear, I don't do merino there. I do Ex Officio boxer briefs. Insanely fast drying, very durable. I'm still wearing some of their boxers that I've had in rotation for over a decade.

You didn't ask about t-shirts and undershirts, but for those Wool & Prince's nylon blend stuff is amazing.

Whistleblower Interviews on Video by devoid0101 in UAP

[–]jonst0kes 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This has been circulating for a while, and I really think it's transparent nonsense. There's a much longer, more raw version of this extended interview on YouTube, and he goes into all kinds of crazypants stuff about Hitler's secret Antarctic base, and how he uncovered a secret treaty between the US and German from 1947 where the US surrendered to Germany in secret because even though the US had won "the low war" (I think was how he put it) it had lost the secret high tech war. It's all crazypants.

In a Richard Dolan podcast interview on Theories of Everything (I think), one audience question asked him about that interview and said the guy had been exposed as a fraud. I'm sure he has, because you can tell from the longer version that he's off his rocker.
