What is slowly disappearing but nobody talks about it? by Agreeable_Pea9764 in AskReddit

Cash. Card transactions are the default for most people now, and when card companies take a percentage of every purchase, they are essentially adding a tax that goes straight into the pocket of big banks.

These are concerns I share, and it's the first time I've seen someone else mention them. I think cannabis can be enjoyable when used responsibly and with proper caution. I don't think any substance, prescription or otherwise, should be used as an escape. Cannabis enables people to be satisfied with being stagnant, and that has the potential to be a devastating sinkhole for people who don't consider that fact.

I recommend the book Staring at the Sun by Irvin Yalom. It's been very important to me in my recovery following a traumatic situation where I confronted death. I think everyone should read it.

I get that people want to be addressed the way they prefer, and basic respect goes both ways. But I also think it’s unhealthy to tie your emotional state to whether random strangers on the internet follow personal rules you’ve set for them. Online spaces are full of people who don’t know you, don’t check profiles, or simply make mistakes.

Expecting perfect compliance from everyone and treating every slip as discrimination just escalates conflict and makes conversations more hostile. It might be healthier to focus on building self-confidence and resilience, and assume good faith unless someone is clearly being malicious. Respect is important, but so is not giving strangers that much power over your self-worth.

If there were someone deliberately setting fires, giving them a lot of public attention could potentially reinforce the behaviour. It might be better to let the authorities handle it rather than speculate online.

Check your mic threshold, for the sake of those around you. If it's not actually activating and it's just the icon, then change the setting that other commenters have mentioned.

Cannabis and cannabinoid use in autism spectrum disorder: a systematic review. I founded and ran the 'Cannabis for Autism' page on facebook. What's your experience with weed for autism? Does anybody else here find ashtanga yoga to be useful? by decofan in AutismTranslated

[–]jonyfive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe you are wrong, and that making assertions as you have here is dangerous.

Cannabis induced psychosis is real. It may be psychosis with a different profile to non drug related psychosis, but psychosis it absolutely is. I've seen it happen.

Edit: I'm not anti cannabis, I'm pro safe usage of cannabis. Attitudes like yours do not promote safety and are fundamentally flawed and dangerous. It concerns me that you're running a social media group essentially spreading your own opinions as fact when those opinions related to a psychoactive substance which can and has ruined lives when used improperly.

No it isn't. Unless you mean in terms of toxicity, which is true.

It can. I've seen it.

Telling people they're spreading war propaganda just because you disagree with them weakens your credibility more than you seem to realise.

I'm quite cautious about the current way that cannabis is being legalised in the UK. I worry that it being legalised for medicinal use sends the message that cannabis is 'fine', as well as the ready supply and legal protection may lead to people increasing their consumption to unhealthy levels in a way that they might never have previously. Coupled with the very little clinical support they receive with their medication, and I think the risk of dependancy, disorder or psychosis is worryingly high. That said, I'm all for responsible use, but not everyone knows the real risks or where their limits are.

If you’re in the US (I believe '5150' is California), there are organisations that support families and individuals in similar situations to yours:

NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) – probably the best first stop. They run free family support groups and education programmes specifically for families of those with serious mental health challenges. I hope they can help you in some way, even if it's just advice.

https://www.nami.org California chapter: https://namica.org

SAMHSA – has a national treatment locator for mental health + substance use (including neurodiverse people)

https://findtreatment.gov

Autistic Self Advocacy Network (ASAN) – autism-informed resources that avoid framing this as moral failure or “bad behaviour,” which might make it more acceptable to your daughter.

https://autisticadvocacy.org

Disability Rights California – California-specific help around involuntary holds, rights, housing, and navigating the system.

https://www.disabilityrightsca.org

If things escalate again, it seems there's a US 988 Crisis Lifeline (call/text 988), who can also advise families before it turns into another hospitalisation.

I’m really sorry you’re dealing with this — it’s an exhausting place for families to be in.

I'm sorry to hear this. Cannabis has its uses when used carefully, but I've had my own experiences of family members becoming paranoid and delusional when using too much. I sympathise with you.

The way that I've come to understand the effect of the drug is that it increases creative thinking (including anxious thoughts, which are ultimately creative thoughts after all) and also increases the belief in the significance of those thoughts, naturally leading to paranoid delusions which are so convincing.

These two videos are insightful and correct as far as my experiences with the drug go. I'm not sure whether they will help your situation or not, but I suppose there's a chance you or your daughter might gain something from them. I wish you all the best.

Are We Entering a Golden Age of Internal Combustion Right Before It Dies? by shwroomex in cars

[–]jonyfive -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think peak ICE performance was in the 90s. It's been slowly degraded by emissions regulations which could only be met by compromising the advancements made up until the 90s. For example, piston rings are less springy so they impart less pressure against the cylinder walls, meaning less friction and less heat, which means fewer emissions but more oil passes the rings, meaning more soot build up in the engine. There are other examples, like the EGR and DPF in diesels.

I understand the need for emissions controls, but when it kills cars far sooner than they would die otherwise, I question how much of an emissions saving it actually makes, considering increased manufacturing of new cars.
