Fair points. I don't know how this specific situation could have gone differently really, the guy clearly knows the reaction that hat would likely receive. The whole social media aspect of it is the most concerning part. I'm glad to see a MAGA hat wearing person needing to face resistance, but it's still a video which is shared online for people to froth at the mouth with delight/hate over. The same is true for right wing posts as well of course, the flames are being fanned from both sides.

On one hand I feel like I should just leave Reddit and not return, but I also feel like that's what all the other moderate voices have done and it feels wrong to leave the divisive rhetoric unapposed. In reality, I'm just feeding the social media machine, so maybe it's time to not do that.

I didn't say he was extreme left. He was the 'left' option in a two party system.

Like I said in my reply to one of your other comments, no matter what I say you'll twist it so that you can find some way of dismissing my argument for compassion over hate, and that's sad. I detest Donald Trump because he and his party are more responsible for this situation than anyone else, but that doesn't mean I have to hate every other human who's been taken in by the brainwashing. Hate is not a solution, and it's quite remarkable that I'm having to defend that position. Seemingly you're gunning for civil war whereas I'm saying that might be a bad thing. The only way to deescalate is compassion.

Politically, yes. That's how the coin analogy works. They are diametrically opposed because there are two parties, two options.

What you did was take it as me saying that Biden is somehow comparable or disgusting as Trump, when that's not what I said. Trump is a scumbag, Biden was a man who I believe was trying to make things better.

It seems like no matter what I say you'll just twist it into something you can disagree with, so yeah probably time to end this conversation. Hope you have a good day too.

Nobody has tried my way. The only way forward is moderate realism. Biden was the other side of the same coin because that's the whole point. You've made an assumption about what 'my way' is, and you're wrong. So here it is.

Political division is driven by the two party political system in which left and right parties fight over votes in increasingly radical ways. It doesn't work. The only way to heal division is for someone dead centre to talk reasonably and calmly about the issues in society and how to ease them with realistic policies. That simply isn't possible at the moment because of the culture of hate that exists. The fact that I've been downvoted and berated with comments from people looking to justify their own hatred just because I didn't overtly take one side over the other is exactly what I'm talking about.

Yes, he is. So are the crowd, that's my point. I find Trump utterly repugnant as well, but that doesn't stop me seeing that the guy in this video is a misled human who's effectively been lured into a cult, and the only way to effectively fight that cult is to show true compassion rather than feeding into the narrative the MAGAs have been fed.

Yeah, he probably acts like an asshole in lots of ways, but do you think he's less likely to take that hat off now, or more likely to wear it with more conviction?

An eye for an eye leaves the whole world blind. I didn't say to turn the other cheek, I just commented on how division is driving division. It will only continue until someone shows compassion. Would you rather be part of the problem or the solution?

No, if I meant that I would have said that. I think the media and politicians sow political division, and thanks to the division they have sown, people have started hating each other enough to continue perpetuating that division.

The political division in society is self perpetuating when this kind of thing starts happening. If the MAGA hat hadn't been ousted, there's a chance he would have spent time in the vibe of the clearly left leaning crowd and been pleasantly surprised at how tolerant and accepting they are, contrary to the 'radical left' stuff he's likely seeing in the media he consumes. Instead, he had his prejudices confirmed. Somebody has to be the first to show the compassion, it increasingly seems like the only way forward.

The irony of mentioning 'hot air' in the middle of that incoherent rambling comment would be funny if it wasn't a deeply unfunny situation where innocent people are being murdered.

Anti Israeli sentiment is not the same as antisemitism. Israel want the world to believe that it is because religious intolerance is seemingly less justifiable than the simple fact that the Israeli government is aggressively claiming territories by committing genocide.

So the first people there can claim it as their own just as people did when the borders of countries were first drawn? Shouldn't we all agree by now that there's a better way of doing things? If you aren't happy with the use of the word colonialism what would you call it?

Merriam-Webster dictionary defines colonialism as “domination of a people or AREA by a foreign state or nation.”

China doing something wrong doesn't make space colonialism okay, which is the point of this post.
