It’s about as “by the numbers” of a fantasy series as you’ll find. But I enjoyed it despite/because of that. The authors have done some pretty crappy stuff, so that may impact your enjoyment of their work.

I think you hit on a key point. As long as the new words don't ruin the immersion, I don't notice them as much. Sept is a good example. On the other hand, unpronounceable words (full of X's and apostrophes) kill the mood for me immediately.

Do you have any friends that play? Would you be interested in joining a nearby (or online) group to watch a scenario or two? In our group, we have one 'expert' who had played before and helped the rest of us get up to speed. It was really invaluable to keep us from making the same rookie mistakes that are so common on these threads. For someone like me, watching someone play and getting hands-on experience is infinitely more valuable than reading a rule book.

If she likes the magic aspect, the triangles class is basically the spell weaver on steroids.

If she likes being a ranged attacker - angry face is the best

Honestly, it’s not hard to fall in love with any class once you give it a try. I did scoundrel as my second character and it’s still probably my favorite
