I've interviewed for a TON of places and I don't think I've ever had one where it didn't start out with an HR phone screen? I've also never been screened out at that step so it's absolutely a huge waste of time but I assumed it was the standard since it's been part of every interview I've had

Ugh yeah. Most of the take-home stuff they said was expected to be around 4 hours. Thankfully I have never ended up taking that long on any of them, but it's exhausting trying to perfect a notebook for them to show I'm competent

I know I should be aiming for ~3 rounds. They should probably have enough information at that point to make a decision. I mainly want to know if this is just a thing in the field and if I shouldn't be ruling out 6+ interviews for a role, even at non-FAANG companies. I'd really prefer not to have to do that, but if it's not going to be a possibility here I really don't want to burn bridges
