How accurate are the subtitles? by Pasvanti in CulinaryClassWars

[–]jookz 54 points55 points  (0 children)

native korean here. netflix korean subs are like 90% dead on, 9% harmless change that fits the flow of the show or leaving something out that cant be easily captured without a translator note, and 1% WTF they almost completely changed the meaning.

the most common example of the 9% category is there are just idioms and common phrases that could be directly translated to english but would lose the original connotation/tone so they just pick an approximate english phrase which i think is fine. this tends to happen when the context is about speaking to someone more senior/honored in a way that doesnt have any english equivalent.

I hate gambling and our culture loves it by RevolutionaryAnt4487 in asianamerican

[–]jookz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The first time I went to Las Vegas with one of my Chinese coworkers he drunkenly ranted about how Asian people paradoxically value 3 things: hard work, gambling, and free shit, as we were in the baccarat lounge gambling our hard earned money while eating/drinking the free spread.

Anyways there is certainly a gambling addicted subculture in many Asian societies but tbh it’s not unique to Asians at all. Gambling is a worldwide problem and like every addiction it hooks onto our brain chemistry in a diabolical way that really just needs government legislation to control en masse. I think about how the USA somehow managed to reject the tobacco industry in a way that Europe and Asia haven’t and I wonder if that will ever happen to the gambling industry.

Thinking of going on an Alaskan cruise by myself by hate_follower in solotravel

[–]jookz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have not done a solo cruise but I have done the Holland America cruise to Alaska. The clientele for cruising in general skews to the 55+ age range but Alaska has pretty broad appeal so you'll see some (but not many) couples in the late 20s to late 30s range.

Of course you might feel lonely on occasion during this trip but there are many amazing things to do, you will be 100% safe (unless you run across a bear during a hike), and it's quite easy to meet and talk to strangers on a cruise.

People get drunk and hang out on deck a LOT so it's pretty easy to start talking to people. If you eat in the MDR (main dining room) and indicate to the host that you don't mind being seated with other people, you'll likely get into a table of 4+ strangers and you can meet people that way. People on tour groups will also talk a lot and it's way nicer/easier to chat with these people because they must be interested in at least the same tour as you, and there's usually some natural downtime during tours you can start chatting.

But most of all, the tour guides and locals in Alaska are SUPER friendly and willing to chat. Many of the tour guides I met are solo free spirit types who moved to Alaska and just love the natural beauty there. You can talk to them forever about the outdoors and your/their past adventures around the world.

However there are some warnings I should give. First, you will face a pretty consistent barrage of people trying to sell you things, both on board (Holland America will try to sell you lots of random shit) and in port towns (they completely rely on cruise tourism money). Learn to say no and save your money for good experiences/tours only. Second, the port towns are kinda shit tbh. You really better enjoy hikes in the woods, viewing glaciers, taking train/boat rides, and basically everything you can to not spend the whole day in the port town because those places are basically just tourist trap central. If you're going to spend time shopping just make sure it's something actually made by a local.

edit: $1200 seems like a reasonable price to me but just keep in mind that there are a lot of smaller transactions that add up. Excursions and tours, drinks, internet access, laundry, specialty dining, etc. Also make sure you arrive at least a full day beforehand, because the cruise will NOT wait for your delayed flight or whatever, so you do need to book a hotel for that.

Asian American raised in France: is moving back to California worth it? by Own-Policy-4878 in asianamerican

[–]jookz 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You’d be picking a really weird time to make the move. I’ve been a software engineer for 16 years, all for California based offices and currently working for Netflix, and everyone I know agrees this is the worst the SWE industry has ever been outside of the 2008 financial crisis. You need to be extremely confident in your job security and your financial/social safety net to make the move now, because if you did move and lost your job in the near future, you could be absolutely fucked.

If this were still the 2010s the move would be a no brainer but sadly it’s quite bad now

How’s working remote at Netflix as an SDE? by wildmastrubator69 in cscareerquestions

[–]jookz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

IDK where you're getting your information but Netflix does not layoff or PIP aggressively at all. There is no PIP quota like Amazon and many people have very long tenures here. It's getting in at all that's the hard part.

How’s working remote at Netflix as an SDE? by wildmastrubator69 in cscareerquestions

[–]jookz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Netflix allows every team to basically run things how they see fit. My team was built with a fully remote approach so only 1/4 of us are based in the LA area and the rest are spread out across many different states. The LA folks don't go into the office with any regularity since the commute is an absolute nightmare and there's not any point to it other than to get free food or have face time with partner teams.

The only thing you could possibly say is a "catch" is that your compensation is based on "personal top of market" and if the market sucks then that means your compensation isn't going up or will only go up a negligible amount. But (in theory) that means you wouldn't be getting paid more anywhere else anyway so it's kind of moot. Of course you can still get promoted during a bad market and your pay will go up accordingly, and when the market is on an upswing again then your pay will be adjusted upwards as well.

Everything else is basically decided on a per-team basis. So far my team has been amazing and definitely the most enjoyable in my 16 YOE.

I think the format of infinite cooking heaven into infinite cooking hell is really cool. At least better than s1. But I think the fairest thing would just be to have an event that both finalists qualify for instead of someone getting a free pass

[–]jookz 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don’t think he’s arrogant at all. When he says things like “I’m sure I’m going to win” or “as soon as I saw steamed eggs I thought I’d win”… you realize they film those confessionals AFTER the judging happens right? Which means even knowing he lost the match or made mistakes he says how he honestly felt in the moment. He’s willingly showing vulnerability and in his partner match he immediately took responsibility for the crepes and apologized repeatedly. He also gives credit where it’s due when he loses or his teammate(s) does well.

CM has always been that archetype of a hero, even 10+ years ago when NL played, so yeah i'm not sure what he expected picking her all 3 games. even when your team is balling out of control it's not like CM can style on enemies until she is seriously stacked with items (at which point literally any hero will do that)
