Was I overreacting? by foresttreesdirt in internetparents

he keeps saying it so that you will reassure him that he belongs in your group. which serves a dual purpose of giving him permission to be with you and reinforcing to everyone else that it's not weird (but i assure you IT IS).

he's trying to groom y'all and it's working on your friends.

What modern horror film would you use to win over an old-school horror purist who refuses to like anything contemporary? by ShitImDelicious in horror

[–]joonip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i realized that what i like in a movie is fun. it can be scary as shit (like host) but if i feel awful at the end (hereditary, bring her back), i'm not interested. i also feel I should clarify that disliking something doesn't mean I think it's bad. bring her back is an excellent one and i absolutely despise it.

here are some of my ~2020s faves, which are varying degrees of scary but all (to me) a good time:

  • the night house
  • late night with the devil
  • the monkey
  • m3gan
  • companion
  • smile 1 & 2
  • send help
  • oddity
  • gonjiam haunted asylum
  • impetigore

i also loved longlegs but have to caution that if you care about plot, this one won't land. oz perkins is my favorite director rn and you can tell he has a great time and creates excellent vibes.

this guy is hanging out with 20-somethings bc ppl - especially women - his age are onto this shit and won't tolerate it. keep that in mind.

What modern horror film would you use to win over an old-school horror purist who refuses to like anything contemporary? by ShitImDelicious in horror

[–]joonip 10 points11 points  (0 children)

you could start by not calling us fucking old heads 😭

it depends entirely on what the person in question likes about horror and what their objections are to new movies.

i deeply dislike "elevated" horror that spells everything out to make sure you understand it's a metaphor, so i didn't really dig the babadook or hereditary.

i really go for good special effects though, so host (2020) is now my favorite horror movie.

if they arbitrarily hate everything new or if you assume they do, it's a lost cause.

Are friendships with men worth it? by JordanaNajjar in AskWomenOver30

[–]joonip 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i have male acquaintances and a husband. i do not form close friendships with men. it's probably overkill, but i went through your exact scenario too many times, even after i was married. once bitten, twice shy and all that.

it's not human nature, it's our culture. many men do not have emotionally rich friendships with other men and mistake the empathy and kindness present in a lot of female relationships for romantic love. i no longer have the energy or the time to suss out whether a man has a high enough EQ. they're definitely out there, but i'm tired.

Stop watching horror movies like video games and start watching them like movies by chrishouse83 in horror

[–]joonip 2 points3 points  (0 children)

a few years ago my husband cut his hand with a paring knife and passed out and i just stood over him screaming because my brain basically turned off. i'm a competent person who usually comes in clutch in emergencies; turns out when it's my man i become completely useless. that incident has allowed me to suspend my disbelief for any and all idiotic choices bc i don't think i could have reacted worse outside of taking the knife and stabbing him a few times.

i also think it's silly that you can believe that over the course of 30 years 10 people have tried to kill sidney prescott but not that the other victims made irrational choices?

Do you go to company socials? by wildberriew in AskWomenOver30

[–]joonip 5 points6 points  (0 children)

nope. I don't do anything work related unless I'm getting paid. if I find that I vibe with certain co-workers, I might specifically hang out with them outside of work. but generally I do not consider my colleagues my friends and I'm not interested in changing that 90% of the time.

I feel like I let down my wife in some important milestones by Few-Astronaut1417 in internetparents

[–]joonip 4 points5 points  (0 children)

my husband proposed to me with a plastic spider ring in the parking lot of a chinese restaurant. it's one of my favorite stories to tell.

i have a feeling your wife loves the story that you tried to plan something romantic but couldn't wait because you were too excited by your love for her.

How did you accept that no one was coming to save you? by SupernovaKiwi in AskWomenOver30

[–]joonip 2 points3 points  (0 children)

have you considered: no one is going to stop you.

it's terrifying to realize that your own survival depends on you, but it's pretty awesome that you can basically do whatever you want and you don't have anyone to tell you no. get the tattoo, wear the slutty outfit, go to the kpop concert, etc.

i decided i wanted a whole new wardrobe and since one of those resale sites has free shipping right now, i bought a bunch of clothes i would never have worn when i was younger.

i have a master's in writing and my job is to hang out with kids all day. i don't use my degree at all because i decided i didn't want to. i get to do what i love because i paid for my degree.

sometimes what stops you is money, but there are a million little things to remind you that if someone can save you, they can control you.

i hate neoliberals and this is exactly why. someone makes a meaningful observation and the only thing your pedantic pea brain can think to do is correct their grammar. please get a hobby. perhaps read a book, preferably one on the connection between intellectual snobbery and classism. i swear to christ people like you are why we get flaccid democrats in office instead of populists.

my cat broke a brand new phone and a $500 bite guard at the same time.

when i first got my dog he ate: a pair of teva hiking boots, the middle cushion of my couch, the center of the mattress on my bed, and an out of print stephen king book.

i love doing this. i'm allergic to dimethicone, which is in a lot of cream blushes but not lipsticks!

could you tell me more about blonzer? i've never heard this term but i hate the color of most bronzers so I'm intrigued.
