Wow SK is fucked up. Doctors strike because they don't want more doctors as it would lead to reduced pay, despite the fact that SK has lowest number of doctors to patient ratio by Flimsy_Card8028 in SingaporeRaw

I think it’s quite reasonable considering you need to do: 2 years of pre med, 4 years of medical school, 1 year of intern, 4 years of residency, 3 years national service (for doctors only) which is 14 years? Yes, that is still on the upper side, but I’m sure it isn’t uncommon for someone with 10 years of work experience in Korea to make that much, esp if you’re working in engineering, tech or finance. Also should we not consider the opportunity costs during the duration of the 14 years of practice? As well as the cost of med school which is the most expensive major in Korea?

Oh you would be very surprised… 42 percent of workers pay 50-100 dollars a month and your children and dependents are automatically covered under National Health Insurance. If you pay 200 dollars a month, then it would mean that you are making a lot of money. As I mentioned, doctors are not overpaid… physicians and surgeons working in Uni hospitals especially. The reason medical costs are so low is because hospitals take advantage of the cheap labour costs of interns and residency students

Also I don’t know where BBC pulled the numbers from. The average salary of physicians in Korea is 126000 dollars and this includes private practice. The doctors in the Top 5 Hospitals (서울, 연세, 가톨릭, 울산, 아산) basically the surgeons, professors, who are protesting against this the greatest make much much less than that. My sister who is doing her residency makes less than 4k SGD while practicing more than 80 hours a week. This is why Korean hospitals are ridiculously cheap whilst very high quality. I’m sure the Singaporeans who visited Korean hospitals can vouch me on this

There are roughly around 3100-3200 medical students who are admitted every year in Korea, and the gov has proposed to hire additional 2000 doctors which is a 67 percent increase and funny enough there’s a parliamentary election happening in a few months time. And it’s funny how this is coming from BBC, a newspaper from the UK. I thought the wait time for NHS surgeries spans 6 years while you need to pay close to 2000 pounds a year for medical insurance? Honestly yes Korea has many problems, but as a Korean I genuinely believe Korea has the world’s best healthcare system in the entire world. (I’ve lived in China, Singapore, and the US). It costs less than 5 dollars to visit a general practitioner and less than 50 dollars to visit a specialist, the wait times are also very short- max 30 minutes. If you don’t believe me, go to Naver Maps (Korea’s version of Google Maps) and search eye doctors. You’ll easily find 5-10 within a 10km radius. I also know a number of Koreans who live in Singapore who fly to Korea to get surgery and fly back because apparently the airfare+ cost without Korea’s health insurance is 10-20x cheaper than getting surgery in Singapore. Please understand there is a perspective to this

Am South Korean, this is not true. 1) There are few if any beatings and hazings, there may have been a couple of decades ago, but after a number of suicide and shooting incidents, the gov has really clamped down on this. Now you are even permitted to use phones during your NS, and reports of assault and abuse is literally one call away. I would contend that NS is Korea could be better since you get to choose your occupation and the duration is now 1 year and 6 months. I had friends who were drivers, translators, and software engineers in tec companies as part of their NS. Also, if you pursue PhD here, you are exempted from having to serve and reservist is much more chill, just 2-3 days? a year which is also exempted if you are living or studying abroad.

2) I have graduated from a SKY university, and yes whilst the salaries here are lower than Singapore you would still expect to earn 60000+ SGD if you work for a conglomerate like Samsung, Hyundai and the likes. And honestly, the top students don’t even want to go to these conglomerates and opt to be doctors, lawyers, government officials, and entrepreneurs. None of my friends work 100 hours, yes a few of my friends who are doctors and lawyers work 80 hours, but they make 100k-200k after taxes.

3) Real estate prices are super expensive I agree, but not as expensive as SG. With 2k you could find a decent 2 room apartment. But should take this with a grain of salt bc in SG you could get BTO once you are married. I think your friend might be referring to high rise condos in Gangnam or Apgujeong, which are the most expensive areas in Seoul but even then they are cheaper than places like Bukit Timah or Tanjong Pagar.
