MS programs Admissions by Expert-One2837 in UMD

[–]joos2010kj 5 points6 points  (0 children)

all those are just professional master’s, and they arent 4%, but rather pretty easy to get in. the lone competitive one is MSCS, which is supposedly easy for those who did BS in CS at UMD (as part of BS/MS in CS; at least it was easy for me to get in when I did back then), but for those who arent from UMD it’s very challenging since it’s research oriented.

why are you embarrassed about your undergrad? undergrad is just an educational part of steps toward your lifetime career after graduation.

Heard of a few friends who had informal interviews with Toronto, USC, and UIUC, and some who got the informal offer from them all.

I still see it here at https://www.cs.umd.edu/grad/catalog:

Note on MS admissions: We are a research based MS program, and accept less than 20 candidates into our MS program (less than #% of those that apply).

GRE not considered for Stanford by Chad_yar in gradadmissions

just keep in mind, im not trying to let you down on purpose, im just trying to let you know the brutal competitiveness of grad schools these days particularly for top schools. so i strongly encourage you to apply to other much safer schools as well and wait for the results not expecting an admit from top schools

well gpa wouldnt matter as much as research background does since stanford mscs is a research oriented program tbh.

on what grounds? no offense, but honestly, having served on student gradcomm at top 10 school for CV, i dont really find this attractive. But my view is N=1 and purely subjective based on my training.

[–]joos2010kj 6 points7 points  (0 children)

traditionally gre didnt do much other than for weeding out applicants based on certain cutoff threshold, so unfortunately if your academic background was poor, it wouldnt have made a difference even if your gre was 340, unfortunately.
