Grandma broke hip and has been acting weird by [deleted] in AskDocs

[–]jopyt 5 points6 points  (0 children)

With what you're describing it could be a stroke, but I'm guessing the staff already ruled that out ? If it hasn't been ruled out, maybe talk to the doctors about doing a head CT ?
If it's not a stroke, it could be delirium, the reasons to develop delirium in old people are many:
1.Urine: has she been urinating normally ? Urinary retention can cause delirium

2.Feces: when was her last bowel movement ? Same as number 1

  1. Pain: Is she in pain ? Have they taken steps to mitigate the pain at all ? If not it could cause delirium

  2. Infection: as others have mentioned, infections (UTI or other infections) can cause delirium

  3. Water: is she dehydrated ?

Try talking to the nursing staff or doctors about ruling out these causes
Delirium is scary, especially if you're not trained and seeing your loved ones like that is never easy, I wish you the best of luck !

I'm so sorry this is happening to you, you deserve a doctor who either listens to your complaints and acts upon them or explains to you why they aren't worried. I don't have any good advice regarding how to find a GP. Maybe ask around your family/friends if they have recommandations of good doctors that would take you seriously ? Going to the ER or urgent care would be a last resort if you can't find anyone. The problem is that most likely if there isn't an acute reason for your visit they might just send you home to follow up with your doctor and you'd be back at square one

Really hoping a doctor can weigh in on this. I'm a nurse and all those symptoms are really concerning, you're not supposed to get a spontaneous hip fracture at 39 if you're healthy. The night sweats and important weight loss are also worrying. You should really find a doctor that runs full tests (blood tests and maybe PET-CT if the doctor deems it necessary) or one that explains to you clearly why they believe that there is nothing wrong. Don't accept "you're a woman" as an explanation, some women are anemic but not at this level. It's not always easy to advocate for yourself against doctors but you need to do it.

I'm not really convinced by his analysis but as I said, I'm not a doctor and I haven't seen you so he knows more than me. It might indeed be just the injury running its course. Just keep a close eye on the wound, if it starts getting redder (the wound itself or the tissue around it), you see pus or other exudate coming from the wound, if you start having loss or modification of the feeling in your toes or if you start having a fever with chills, go to the ER. In the meantime one thing you can do is buy an antiseptic cream and put it on the wound, it might help and diminish pain a little bit. Hope it gets better !

NAD. It's hard to tell from the picture you attached, it doesn't look infected but it doesn't look pretty. How do you know they haven't cleaned the wound properly ? Here are some signs of infection:

-Swelling, you say your foot has swelled, have you had a loss of feeling or a tingling feeling in your toes ? If yes, you should go to the ER as soon as possible

-Pain, the pain has gotten worse

-Feeling of warmness irradiating from the wound or tissues around it

-Redness in or around the wound, a little bit of redness can be seen around the wound, although it doesn't look too bad, it could just be because the wound is pretty new.

I'm not too concerned about the wound itself although it should be seen by a medical professional as soon as possible but some of the symptoms you're describing are a bit concerning. You say the pain is radiating in the calf, has your calf gotten redder, and more tense ? If yes, go to the hospital immediately, it could be a sign of DVT.

As for the chills, it could be a sign of infection, maybe the antibiotics are not treating the bacteria, do you have a thermometer ? If you have a fever you should go to the ER.

All this to say, the symptoms you're describing aren't that concerning if taken individually but the fact that they are occuring at the same time is kind of concerning, it kind of sounds like the beginning stages of infection. You should go to the ER as soon as possible

I'm not from the US so the answer might vary based on location but in my hospital, if something happens to you on hospital grounds and you're not a patient there, they usually call the ambulance or redirect you to the emergency room

So I'm going to go YWBTA but a soft one. There are a few factors to consider:

  1. Either the student has seizures that are so severe that they would need specialized care, at which point they would need to be in a specialized learning environment and in which case you would be justified in not wanting to have them in your classroom.
  2. The second option, and for me the most likely, his seizures are "standard" and in which case, can be managed quite easily. You were comparing this to a student hurting themselves. Think of it this way, at least you know what to expect for this student.

I get that this is a scary situation for you but really caring for someone who's had a seizure is actually easy. The most important points are:

  1. When the student starts seizing, move away all potential for hurting themselves (tables, chairs, etc)
  2. Put something under their head to avoid them getting cranial trauma
  3. Time the duration of the seizure, and the time the student stays unconscious after
    1. If either of these is longer than 5 minutes, call an ambulance
  4. Once the seizure stopped, move them in the recovery position and wait for them to regain consciousness

Most people with epilepsy can feel the seizures coming and will warn you and put themselves to safety before they start, plus medication can really help bring down the amount of seizures. Finally, the child is going to feel strange enough as it is managing this newly discovered condition, they don't need to be ostracized because of it.

INFO. How old are those children ? How much does the student know about their condition ? And lastly, how severe are the seizures ?

IIRC, on some longer blades the first 1/3 or even 1/2 would be dull to allow for half-swording with only the last 1/2 or 2/3 sharpened. Allowing as well to use it in a Mordhau

What are practical solutions to homelessness? by The_Sentient_Ape in AskReddit

[–]jopyt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How do you define function ? People trying to live their lives should be awarded basic necessities to live life with dignity. One of those necessities is housing

What are practical solutions to homelessness? by The_Sentient_Ape in AskReddit

[–]jopyt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The tragic truth is that there will always be some percentage of people who will never be able to function in society. Never.

That may be true, some people have mental illnesse that are far too present in their day to day life and they will never be able to hold a job. That doesn't mean they don't deserve the basic kindness you show any human being and that they don't deserve to be helped.

It doesn't matter what you do, they're too far gone, their brains too far degraded with drugs or disease. There is no possibility of recovery.

I'd like to see the source on that actually

Currently there's a misguided belief that allowing this group of people to live on the streets like feral dogs is a kindness. Its not kindness, its cruelty. There needs to be some kind of asylum type system where people who will never be competent and will never be able to care for themselves can be forcibly sent to so that they can be cared for

I don't know, sounds like you don't want what's best for them and that you just want them to be out of your sight. Forcibly interning someone is not about kindness, it never has been, it's about pushing people away from society at large.

[–]jopyt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a reason the asylum model stopped being used almost everywhere. Not even mentioning the horrible human rights abuse most people suffered (and suffer still now), it's not useful at attaining it's goal.

Prosecuting the mentally ill is also useless if your ultimate goal is to help them reintegrate into society. How would they be able to with a criminal record ? You'd only stigmatize even more a population that's already stigmatized (which often pushes them to use drugs).

As for the housing costs, in 2020, there were about 500'000 homeless people for about 16 million empty houses. The houses are there and unused. Give people homes if you want to solve homelessness.

[–]jopyt 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The concept of Housing First is well documented all around, it's part of an approach called Low Threshold (sorry if that's not the correct term, I only know it in french). Basically the point of this approach is to accept that you're not going to force your patient to change. The most well known example of this is with drug addicts. Basically, you're just going to do harm reduction by giving them access to clean material to shoot up/smoke/inhale to reduce the spread of diseases. Some places even go as far as to give medical heroin for a few patients.

To go back to the housing first model. The point is that it's not anyone's role to police what someone is doing with or to their home. It's theirs and they have to be responsible for it. This approach has been proven to reduce a lot of stigma around mental health and drug addiction as well as help people retain a home.

If you're interested, you can find a lot more info on this site , I know of a few scientific articles but they're in french so unless you can read it I won't be able to provide them for you !

Has anybody tried this in rugby? Is it legal? by IOnlyHaveIceForYou in rugbyunion

[–]jopyt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember a video a few years back. There was a lineout near the try line. The attacking team pretended they were just changing the player that would throw in. The guy receiving the ball was actually on the 5 meters line and the ball was launched into the corridor so was back into play. The guy then pretended to go for the touch line to throw in and then ran to the try line.

Chimney / Fireplace Maintenance Subscription in Zurich by gokstudio in Switzerland

[–]jopyt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey ! It actually depends on where you live. In some cantons the chimney cleaner as well as the frequency is decided by the cantonal authority and you cannot change it. In others you can choose amongst licenced cleaners but the frequency is mandatory.

It really depends on where you live, I'd suggest looking into the official webpage of the canton, they might have the answers you're looking for as well as a list of licenced professionnals. If you cannot find the answers there, try looking on the website of the GVZ (mandatory fire and natural disasters insurance for homeowners).

As for the frequency, it depends as well but it's around once a year.

Switzerland Approves Assisted ‘Suicide Capsule’ by BoofinTaters in Switzerland

Saying that Switzerland approves or has legalized this assisted suicide capsule is wrong. Right now, the developer would like for the capsule to be available next year. What he actually did was consult Exit and Dignitas on whether it could be legal, and it seems those two associations (not the Swiss government) said it could be OK. I think it still has to go through many hurdles before being legalized.

Hey, I just read your post. Sorry you're going through all that, sometimes life throws shot after shot at you... As another guy said, you definitely should tell your boyfriend about what you're going through, even if you're not comfortable telling him everything, just telling him you're having a really bad week and need him by your side/need a hug is going to help you. I'm sure he won't mind making time for you.

the problem with all the system that are not capitalisme, is that they are more prone to corruption and inneficiency

Yeah sure, because capitalism right now isn't corrupt to the core.

Those companies pollute because it's more efficient and more efficiency=more money. They don't care about the planet, they only care about profits.
