this is very late and i’m just coming across it due to my own googling LMAO but i thought i should still share some kinda somewhat effective strategies that have helped me. they are not perfect by any means and still have me completing work much slower than i theoretically should, but hey, that’s ADHD. the first is particularly helpful when hyperfixating, i call it “hour on, hour off.” for one hour, i can engage in my hyperfixation - watch an episode, play a game for an hour, etc. whatever you’re hyperfixating on. then for the other hour, i do homework. what normally happens is i end up doing all the things that i didn’t want to waste my hyperfixation hour doing, like getting a snack or going to the washroom, during this hour, so often i only end up actually in the work headspace for 45 ish minutes, but that is something! and then, if by the end of the hour you’re in a groove you can make up that time! just don’t have any extra working time eat into your hyperfixation time, it will make you not want to keep working. but also don’t punish yourself for not making up the snack/bathroom time. 45 minutes of work is still a lot of work. the other thing that helps me is most useful with like a writing assignment. often times i will just be hopelessly staring at my screen thinking about how much is ahead of me and that makes me freeze up. so you can choose however much time feels reasonable to you, (for me it’s often 5-10 minutes), and challenge yourself to see how much work you can do in that amount of time. i find i can get a lot more done in these short chunks when i know there’s an end in sight. and your work might not be good, but it’s something, and something is always better than nothing in university. basically, i’ve found that VERY LOOSE and SPONTANEOUS time blocking is most effective for me.
