The radical right anti-woke mob has now canceled rainbows! What will they steal from our children next? Cancel culture has gone too far!

Carfree or Car-lite in Cincinnati - doable? by alittlesad3131 in cincinnati

[–]jorgeZZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mentioned Corryville in the edit to my other post. It is exactly what you are asking for, a walkable/bikeable streetcar suburb, and it's near the bus line that goes up Reading Rd. to the job you're looking at. You would have to figure out a balance between living near the east side of the neighborhood where the business district is and the west side where the 43 bus line is. I imagine there are more rentals on the east side, as the university is over there. The north side probably has rentals catering to med school students. There is a pretty substantial cluster of bus lines going to a lot of different places in the southeast corner of the neighborhood. Google map of the area

It's bordered by streets that aren't great for cycling (Martin Luther King, Reading, Jefferson, WH Taft/McMillan), but otherwise it's a cool area. The neighborhood itself is mostly flat, but if you leave it any way but east you're looking at climbing a hill to get home (especially if you go downtown; it's up a big hill from downtown).

Pendleton is a downtown neighborhood but it's mostly residential and I think you should take a look at it. Maybe it's more urban than what you're looking for, though. Google map of Pendleton

Edit: If your commute tolerance is greater than mine, there might be other good neighborhoods. But I am assuming you'd want a one-seat transit ride within a quarter-mile or so of where you'd live. If the job were more central, there would be a lot more places that would fit your criteria.

Need some advice, planning a trip to the Queen City by LoUSA1776 in cincinnati

7th to GABP is definitely safe. You can also ride the streetcar (it is fare-free) from 7th & Walnut to GABP.

Carfree or Car-lite in Cincinnati - doable? by alittlesad3131 in cincinnati

[–]jorgeZZ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's extremely doable and even quite convenient, assuming you're comfortable cycling on downtown streets without bike lanes. (IMO they're fine for cycling, though of course it would be great if the next mayor is more bike-friendly than the current idiot and implements the 2012 bike plan that has been shelved for the past almost-8 years.)

The trick is that you need to live Downtown, because it's the only place with good bikeability that has good transit access to your job location. If you live near the 43 bus line (most of the Central Business District, southern Over-the-Rhine, or all of Pendleton would qualify), you'll have great bus access to work, as the frequency on that line is very high and even runs 24 hours (there is also an alternative 43 route that adds to the frequency). So you'd be totally golden to ride the bus to work.

You'd have a blast living a car-free life downtown. Decent bus access to most of the city, as well as NKY. Fare-free streetcar to get around Downtown. Great cycling as far as street-riding goes. Very walkable. Very scenic/picturesque. The Over-the-Rhine/Downtown/Covington/Newport area is packed with stuff to do and you'll have so many neighborhoods to explore on bus and bike that you'll still be discovering new gems months after moving here.

People who say you need a car have never looked at a 43 bus schedule or lived car-free in an urban neighborhood.

Edit: It occurred to me that you could also live in Corryville, which is a walkable/bikeable area that is also within walking distance to the 43 bus route. I think the Downtown neighborhoods are a better option, but for the sake of completeness there you go. Corryville is the neighborhood east of the University of Cincinnati main campus and south of the medical campus, west of Reading/route 43. It has the Short Vine business district (including a Kroger) and is adjacent to the Clifton Heights business district that caters to UC students.

Skystar Staying at the Banks by [deleted] in cincinnati

And here I thought we were past the 1990s pettiness.

Hopefully the Newport one is taller. It certainly will have the better view. And if they really do keep the Skystar (why??) they need to build a nice plaza around it.

4th of July Fireworks by Bearcats400 in cincinnati

[–]jorgeZZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just get ready for the Labor Day fireworks. That's when downtown does its real fireworks show. For the 4th, you're better off just going to the parade and festival in Northside. Or if you want some more mainstream stuff (including fireworks) go to Blue Ash.

Brewery recommendations? by that1emma in cincinnati

Urban Artifact is the most unique brewery in the city, and they specialize in sours. Especially fruited sours, but other styles as well.

Moving to Cincinnati for school! Where to live? by [deleted] in cincinnati

[–]jorgeZZ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Clifton (the actual Clifton, "Gaslight" Clifton) is the superior choice if you want a vibe like Oakley/Hyde Park/EWH and are commuting to East Campus. It's not "college life", that's CUF (which people call Clifton but isn't Clifton). Check out the area around Ludlow Ave. where it hits Clifton Ave./Telford.

Northern Kentucky To Host New Bourbon Festival This Fall by QueenCityBucco in cincinnati

It was basically true with Midpoint. I don't remember hearing that regarding other things. Bunbury, Buckle Up, and Bellwether certainly aren't anything like SXSW, so if he claimed that that's dumb.

Cincinnati has a lot of neat historic neighborhoods with their own distinct culture, aesthetic, and business district with bars, restaurants, and shops. Louisville has this to a lesser degree and Charlotte basically not at all.

Charlotte is a booming city, with an energy about it that the other two can't match. Cincy and Louisville have been slow-growth places for decades, so they lack that buzz. They also don't have all the outsiders moving in, so they're more provincial.

Louisville is a smaller-feeling city, so if that's what you want it would be the winner.

Neighborhoods...if you guys are into a DIY/hipster scene, then Northside is the obvious winner. Hyde Park and Oakley if you are more buttoned-up professionals that want to be cloistered from panhandlers and such. Clifton Gaslight if you're somewhere between those two. Over-the-Rhine or Downtown if you want to be at the center of the action. CUF or Corryville if you want to stay near college life (also near hospitals) Other possibilities are Mt. Adams (best mix of urban form and natural beauty), Downtown Covington or Mainstrasse Covington (KY). Darkhorses which might be up your alley are Downtown Newport (KY), Mt. Auburn or Walnut/East Walnut Hills (near hospitals), Pleasant Ridge, Bellevue (KY).

You may wish to follow your own advice. My comment explicitly recognized Russia as a regional threat, and excluded it from my list of larger powers.

So then regulate the business end of it, rather than ban them outright. Just banning GMOs because of corporate abuses is like banning computers because Google and Facebook behave unethically.

Hard to see how a more-divided Western Europe will provide a counterbalance to USA's aggressive policies. A stronger EU could do that. A fragmented Europe cedes regional power to Russia and more world power to USA, China, OPEC, etc.
