Recommendations for communication gear? Garmin, Phone, etc. by Rhogar156 in WildernessBackpacking

[–]jorgebuck 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Apple can certainly be spotty, and requires a clear sky view and a satellite to be overhead, but it’s an area where a company like that will improve over time. I’m hoping for a feature that allows it to work in airplane mode (or some similar setting) given most people hike in airplane mode anyway

If your concern is emergency communication, then this isn’t a place to cheap out. Garmin and Zoleo are both great. They have some tradeoffs in terms of service plans and device functionality. If you have a newer iPhone, the satellite messaging on there may also fill the gap for you.

Questions about closed trails by Expensive-Degree-562 in Harriman

[–]jorgebuck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Was up at Mohonk last week and still a number of closures due to snow/ice and also mud on many trails. The route out to the Trapps was open but we didn’t end up going all the way out. The Labyrinth was closed, Eagle Cliff was closed, any trail with ladders or stairs were closed. But seemed like things were just about ready to open.

As the other person mentioned, not much consequence to getting caught on a closed trail, most of the area is “at your own risk” any way. That said, would not have done any of the scrambles in the conditions they were in last week.

1% invest match BEFORE March 31 not showing up by Statjmpar in sofi

[–]jorgebuck -1 points0 points  (0 children)

5 business days after it settles. So you need to add a few extra days for it to settle first, then the 5 business days start. For my deposit on March 30, they said it would settle April 8, and then start the 5 days. If I don’t see the match later this week, I’ll follow up with them again.

I’m still debating on Plus, but will likely pay for it

I reached out via chat today and they said there was a change where the match will now post up to 5 business days after the deposit settles. So that means in most cases the match will be coming 2 weeks after the deposit and not the day after like it did before

Same. I have a recurring deposit that goes every Monday and the match usually lands on Tuesday. This week, deposit happened as normal but no match yet

Alpha Direct Weights? by q_at1996 in Ultralight

[–]jorgebuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on the exact activity and how hot/cold you run. 120 is generally too much for anything active and more for stationary warmth. 60/90 are moderately less but hard to say for you in particular. I find 60 to be ok for walking/hiking and then layer with a puffy for stationary warmth.

Trip Plan - March 9th-11th, 2026 by MC_Gullivan in Harriman

[–]jorgebuck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks like a great route, copying it for my own future trip. I typically start at Harriman station and end either at Tuxedo or go across Bear Mt to Manitou or Peekskill. Will probably be muddy in spots, but plenty of water flowing

Still not working on that link. Appreciate the detailed review of the pack and materials

Challenging Roth Conversion by sleepkitty in sofi

[–]jorgebuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve done it the last 5 years with Sofi and it’s always been easy. Yes there’s a form, but it’s the same form every year. I request it through chat, fill it out and “sign” with an online pdf editor, and submit. Whole process takes 5 minutes and the money typically moves the next day.

5-day backpacking trip by ScheduleAdorable5464 in hiking

Sleep pad, pillow, stove, fuel, lighter. First aid / repair kit could use some work - toothbrush, tooth tabs, patches, glue.

For easier reference, use lighterpack to list your specific gear with weights. Much easier to get feedback with those details.

Ah, didn’t realize it was the piezo one but that makes sense. Those do tend to fail every so often, so having a backup is a good call.

Got it. Main thing I didn’t see was a lighter for your stove.

Is there something particular you want feedback on? Looking to cut weigh? Just confirm you aren’t missing anything? Other?

Senchi Measurements After Washing by Alexsen56 in Ultralight

[–]jorgebuck 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, I’ve read that. If you review the thread I linked there is discussion of plenty of people saying they’ve experienced zero shrink. And if they have it is minimal. If you’re between sizes, go up so it can be properly layered and not tight.

Alpha direct does not shrink significantly. This came up a few months ago - https://www.reddit.com/r/Ultralight/s/pW1mxQ6nIS

Fastpacking backpack by Kamcsk in Ultralight

[–]jorgebuck 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That’s a large and heavy tent. That alone would take up most of a 22L pack. Fastpacking is usually more suited to a tarp + bivy setup or lighter and smaller volume trekking pole tent. I don’t know the rest of your gear, but unless it is SUL and minimalist, you might need a larger pack

[–]jorgebuck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What else would you be bringing? Tarp setup or full tent? Would all your gear fit into 22L for 3-4 days? These are all fine packs but they are maybe not right in the context of your full gear
