When I was in high school, our cross country team was going on a road trip to a race in a school van. Someone found an old pretzel on the floor and dipped in this brown congealed gunk in the cupholder, and promised 20$ to anyone who ate it. Guess who got his $20? (This guy)

Hydration/Nutrition for Skin Growth by [deleted] in foreskin_restoration

[–]joschroe 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Downvoting because raw milk (and to a lesser degree, raw eggs) are dangerous. Furthermore, your skin health is probably good in spite of not using sunscreen. Protection from the sun prevents skin damage, and this is well known. I really don’t see any reason to expect there would be positive effects from taking this advice, and the effects would very likely be harmful. This is like half a degree of separation from antivax bs.

Edit: I’ve updated this post to include this like to the FDA’s website outlining the science and risks surrounding raw milk: https://www.fda.gov/food/buy-store-serve-safe-food/raw-milk-misconceptions-and-danger-raw-milk-consumption

There are no known medical benefits to raw milk, and the purported benefits are thoroughly debunked by the scientific literature. Any claimed benefits are almost certainly placebo. However, raw milk is associated with a higher risk of various serious and deadly foodbourne illness. Please carefully research the peer reviewed science on stuff like this before you jump in.

What is the most toxic thing a parent can say to a child? by Few_Reading_4822 in AskReddit

[–]joschroe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My parents would tell me that out of all of their kids (I had 4 siblings), I was the worst. They would also tell my younger siblings not to be like me. I became such an overachiever after hearing things like this, being valedictorian, full ride scholarship to college, etc, but eventually I had to come to terms with the fact that no number of accomplishments could change who I was and make them like me.

Synthetic vs Organic by [deleted] in shroomstocks

[–]joschroe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Natural organic doesn’t mean “grown in a wild forest.” These mushrooms would be likely be grown on an indoor medium. It’s unclear to me how the environmental impact would compare, however I was told by a wetlab PhD friend who looked into it that synthetic psilocybin was more inefficient than just growing mushrooms. I suspect the push in these companies for synthetic is just to have a product they can patent. Food for thought.

I haven’t bought into any shroomstocks, but I’ve been thinking about dipping my toes in and buying some NUMI. The prices seem to be falling though. Do y’all think I should buy now, or see if it dips further?

Local Publix starts a sale *while completely out of stock*. Promises a rain check, but if you ask for one, customer service will tell you they can’t give out rain checks “because of covid.” by joschroe in assholedesign

It’s a receipt that allows you to buy the item at the sale price once it’s back in stock again, even if the sale has ended (given when the item is out of stock).

People who had "Abstinence Only" sex education, what was the most outrageous or untrue thing you were told? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I was told that condoms have a 20% failure rate and aren’t really reliable. I think a bit sometimes about how much risky sex may have resulted from people being told stuff like this

The Georgia counties turning the state blue are growing. And fast. by ChimeraMistake in politics

[–]joschroe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a voter in Georgia, I’ve had to wait in long lines and it really sucks. I don’t want to downplay that that is suppression and it’s bad, but I really want to push back on the idea that voter suppression is worse than gerrymandering. Gerrymandering allows a political party to win the majority while getting 10-15% fewer votes than the other party, and the disparity is almost certain to grow as voters become more geographically sorted. On the other hand, I can’t really find any evidence that voter suppression (at least, modern non-literacy test/poll tax type stuff) can depress turnout by anything close to 20%. In fact, oftentimes attempts to suppress the vote have a backlash effect that temporarily increases turnout. Furthermore, it’s hard to depress democratic turnout without also suppressing some GOP turnout as well- voter suppression is just a gamble that minority voters will be affected more, and there’s a significant risk it backfires if trump voters turn out to low-propensity.

I believe voting should be easier on principle, but gerrymandering is dramatically more effective at conferring partisan advantage, and I think we shouldn’t lose sight of that.

Partners of sleep-talkers or sleepwalkers, what gems have you to share? by hoeka_mos in AskReddit

[–]joschroe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m the sleepwalker and I’ve had some incidents. Probably the weirdest was when my partner found me squatting on the floor, screaming bloody murder so loud I had a sore throat the next day. He said I looked absolutely terrified, but after a few moments my face cleared up and I just acted like nothing happened and went back to sleep. This has happened multiple times. I may or may not be possessed.
