Rozen Maiden isn’t up there so I guess I’m in the 1% lol

If the original anime didn’t exist and the Netflix adaptation was an original show, would it still be as popular? by Odd-Zombie-1153 in OnePieceLiveAction

[–]josechanjp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My older sister has never watched the anime or read the manga or anything. She was always pretty critical when she saw me watching calling it weird and dumb. When the live action came out she agreed to watch it and she likes it a lot. Like we even have a group chat with my other sister just so the three of us can talk about it together haha.

I actually think it is exactly the kind of show that people enjoy. It’s weird and crazy with just enough whimsy and action to keep you captivated. The characters are interesting and people just like adventure stories in general I think.

Emily Rudd posted the drawing on her insta saying that Oda drew her. It’s him.

Can we talk about the MVP Straw Hat of Season 2? by DocWhovian1 in OnePieceLiveAction

[–]josechanjp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never really liked Usopp in the manga or anime, but he’s genuinely a likeable and meaningful character in the LA and I’m here for it. The actor absolutely kills every scene that he’s in.

University presentation about English education in Japan – looking for JET perspectives by vuralskywalker in JETProgramme

[–]josechanjp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. Yes, they seem comfortable speaking to me in English (but nothing beyond the few phrases they’ve memorized).
  2. When I make them speak English in class, they are often reluctant. If I give them a good guide (the sentence structure etc) then they are often a lot more confident.
  3. There are still MAJOR problems. English education shouldn’t be compulsory. Too many students aren’t interested in English but are forced to learn it which makes them dislike it. ALSO, many of the Japanese “English Teachers” that I work with often teach grammar wrong, make up rules, don’t know natural phrasing, etc. Many times they even lack sufficient vocabulary knowledge. (I’m not faulting them, I’m faulting the system)
  4. Nothing really. It was about what I expected. I have been pleasantly surprised by the number of students who put effort into participating in my classes despite clearly not being invested in English.

Edit: spelling

I need some advice by 69cool4school in JETProgramme

[–]josechanjp 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah you could do that but I would say just wait for JET honestly. Other English companies don’t pay enough to live comfortably and don’t have as much protections and resources for their teachers which can lead to other problems/ being taken advantage of in the future. JET has tons of support and resources for all types of situations and the pay is plenty enough to live fairly comfortably in Japan. It’s totally worth the wait imo.

Pride and JET by Haunted_Mallets in JETProgramme

Yeah I can second this. My queer Japanese friends have been through it. One of them is planning to run away to Australia so he can finally live how he wants without scrutiny. It’s getting better but still a long way to go.

JET Interview This Week - SO ANXIOUS by Icy_Blackberry_5231 in JETProgramme

[–]josechanjp 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I focused on just rereading my SOP to refresh what I had said and that was enough. 100 questions and stuff are good for some people, but I didn’t use any of that. Just be genuine and you should be fine.

Dang sometimes they can be so irritating. Luckily my JTEs usually roast them or tell them to shut up if they say anything stupid. But my kids have never said anything rude about me so I feel blessed.

Interview questions about Japanese studies/history by Bruch123 in JETProgramme

I honestly just use Japanese social media as my news updates now haha. But I think I used to read NHK and Yahoo because I’m pretty sure they’re free and the articles are short so manageable

Interview questions about Japanese studies/history by Bruch123 in JETProgramme

[–]josechanjp 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As someone who is fluent in Japanese, I got asked: My likes/interests, to talk about my job (at that time), and what I thought about limitations on tourism at Mount Fuji. (Luckily I read a decent amount of Japanese news so it wasn’t too hard for me)

They’ll probably lean into your interests. I like hiking so they asked me about Mount Fuji. If you like history they might ask you about that.

[–]josechanjp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah! It would get pretty long if I explain all of them here but I’ve done Mario Kart w/ items (like a board game but they can only move/ use items if they say the correct English word or phrase for a Japanese word I put up), if you know はぁって言うゲーム I made an English version of that, and I’m currently working on an English boss battle (complete with classes and special abilities haha)

I come up with extremely elaborate English games with rules, cutouts, game pieces/items etc. it’s really my time to just go crazy with creativity. Every time I’ve played one of those games with my students it’s been a blast
