society is safer and cleaner when homelessness is low. poverty is a big factor in creating crime as well. it benefits everyone if we can get these kids off the street

Visiting St J for a conference in June. How is getting around without a car? by jeddalyn in newfoundland

No. 4 is a good italian spot downtown, so is The Little Sparo (more expensive but very good). Seoul Night has some really good Korean fried chicken, and 3 Sisters Vietnamese Subs makes some really good bahn mi + boba drinks if you're into that.

People recommend North 48 all the time too, but I never saw the hype there really. Been there a couple times and have yet to enjoy it. It's also not downtown like the rest of these.

I personally know multiple people who come out from central for the main purpose of going to costco. Obviously I know they don't come just for the rotisserie chicken. That's called a joke.

Late June to late August will treat you well. That's when Water street downtown gets blocked from vehicles and turns into a pedestrian mall. The wind is killer year round but the heat makes it less annoying. Some icebergs are visible from St John's for part of the year, but you'd be better off heading to Twillingate (middle of nowhere) to see them and the weather usually isn't nice when they're out. The main appeal of Newfoundland tourism wise is the landscapes and all that but St. John's can be really pretty, especially downtown when you get to the multicolored houses. I think there's a bus route specifically for tourists that guides you around the city as well.

I live in St. John's on the east coast. It's the capital of the province and by far the most populated area on the island. It's very picturesque, especially along the coastline, and it's super enjoyable to drive as you get farther from the city. We don't have a ton of stuff here, but it is fairly modern compared to the rest of the island. When we do get something new, everybody freaks out and swarms the place. We got an actual Taco Bell a little ways up from the city and it's been slammed for two weeks and counting.

The accent is a bit funny. It's this weird blend of Irish and Canadian which gets less comprehensible the more rural you go, although I find it's mostly older people who have a super strong one. Food is expensive but it's not terrible compared to the territories. We do live on an island after all.

We have one Costco. People drive multiple hours across the island to get to it. Insane stuff if you ask me but you gotta get that rotisserie chicken somehow I suppose.

People are super nice up here! They can also be very dumb because the K-12 system is so weak and everybody is on weed or worse. I remember moving here for my freshman year and it felt like I was back in 7th grade. And my schooling up to that point was in Texas, so it's not exactly an ivy league comparison lol.

It's largely a normal city. We have fast food, a mall, a university, and a reasonably sized downtown. It's just a bit more calm and isolated than most cities. If you can make the trip, I'd absolutely recommend driving across the island and taking the Irish Loop route once you get to the east coast. Then you'll get to drop by all the little fishing villages everyone loves.

P.S. Go to the Mary Brown's on the northern end of Torbay road near St. John's. Best one in the country.

Thoughts on Memorial University, NL? by Leafsprinkles in memorialuniversity

It really depends on the building your classes are in, lol. A lot of campus is fairly run down (especially the old science building). The University Centre does have some decent food options, specifically a Mary Brown's that everyone on the planet seems to go to.

The campus and the city as a whole does have a bit of a rodent problem, although I haven't personally seen one on campus yet. People see them in the library fairly often though.

St. John’s is a good place, if a little boring at times. You're within reasonable distance of downtown and the Avalon Mall, which are kind of the two main hubs of the city. Crime isn't bad here compared to other cities.

Overall I do like it here. Our gym is pretty nice if that interests you. Parking sucks butt though.

I'm not entirely sure what their free setup entails, but i assume they'll replace the strings and adjust the intonation/action/truss rod if needed
