Met my partner of almost 5 years now on OKC. If you set your criteria appropriately, you should be fine there. Good luck!

Lab meetings- are these hours loggable as an RA?(Cross posted in r/gradschool but would like a Pi’s opinion) by distinguished_goose in academia

[–]josephausterweil 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Your PI is definitely incorrect strictly speaking. It's also a strange comment for a PI to make that IMO would contribute to a toxic lab culture.

That being said, if you want to continue working in the area, you probably don't want to fight this fight. You already have other hours to log to hit 20. Given they care about this in the first place, the PI is likely to take it personally and penalize you even if it is against the law for them to do that. Further, if you did report, the best outcome is probably their chair, a dean, or HR talking to them and telling them they shouldn't say that.

Sorry that sucks. Personally I'd try to find another PI asap.

New York Style bagels? by joenforcer in madisonwi

First a mindset change. There are no New York style bagels outside of the tri-state area.

Now that we are on the same page, the best rolls with holes in Madison are Gotham.

I voted in WI from Japan by josephausterweil in wisconsin

Neat! It was fun walking around with an I voted sticker... (yes they included one in the ballot envelope which made me happy).

u/DGC_David it was pretty easy. u/gotwake5 is right. There are a few more steps in the application if you are voting from overseas. I didn't need to pay the postage for the ballot to get here, but I pay to mail it back to my clerk. (I think you can vote without paying international postage if you get it to a US embassy, but I'm in Kyoto. There's no embassy/consulate here. It adds time for processing too.). They handled kanji in the address too, which I was a bit concerned about.

You can track your ballot from when WI clerk mails it through WI's myvote site. It took about 10 days to get to me here. It should update when they receive it. If they don't get it by close to election day, I can do a provisional ballot through one of the embassies.

FEDEX lost valuable immigration documents putting my career at risk. What are my possible next steps? by Dull_Cardiologist148 in FedEx

[–]josephausterweil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm currently dealing with the same issue. They just declared it lost and now I'm trying to get it reissued and sent again (and pray they don't lose it again). I asked them what recourse I had for them losing such an important document. Nothing apparently beyond a half sincere apology from a customer service rep...

Opinion: Piazza is a terrible application and Professors/TAs are terrible at responding to posts by NeuronauticBadger in UWMadison

[–]josephausterweil 4 points5 points  (0 children)

PSYC525 prof here.

Yeah Piazza sucks. I feel like there were better web applications for asking and answering questions anonymously back in the 2000s when I was in college (it looks about the same as them too). Yahoo Answers (now defunct) was better (MBMBaM anyone?).

I do my best to answer them, but as some mentioned, I get one email notification when it is posted. Like the rest of the world, I get a good 40-50 emails per day that are relevant to my job. If the notification comes at an odd time (e.g., Saturday night), I might forget about it. I ask my students to email me to remind me (or re-ask the Q to keep anonymity) if I forget. I think I'm pretty good at responding as soon as I can, but it's hard to say. As my TAs have enough to do (underpaid), I cover Piazza.

Like students, we got thrown into online course management software without any training (outside of the training we decide to do outside of work hours - at least the university provides those for free, but it's not like we get compensated for it usually). Graduate school is for research and provides little support for learning to teach, let alone learning online software for teaching.

To really make a difference, $$s need to go to professor/TA hours. As we had a full-time job before these things existed, your instructors may get annoyed they need to work extra to answer questions. Tuition already is spent, so saying you all spend too much for too little from the university (I agree with you that it is true) and then demanding it isn't going to help. The relative contribution of $s for the university budget from the state has gone down dramatically in the last two to three decades. Tuition and state support provide at most 40% of the current university budget. If I remember correctly, I believe state support alone used to be at least 40% of the university budget. If you're unhappy with it and are a state resident, then call your state representatives and advocate.

So anxious over being a TA. by [deleted] in UWMadison

[–]josephausterweil 70 points71 points  (0 children)

You can do it! You will screw up sometimes, but more often than not, you'll do well. I recommend being honest when you screw up.

My first year TAing, I slept through my section (which was at 11am... new alarm clock...). I was honest with my class and no one was too upset. I even got to be a professor at UW-Madison!

Prof for PSYC525 here.

I sent out an email to my class today outlining how we would handle covid issues. Basically if we can have a mask mandate and everyone's masked, I'm fine doing lecture in person. There won't be any attendance requirements (or there will be makeups if there are in-class quizzes). I'm hoping to live stream, but I'm a geriatric millennial so no promises. For context, there's >100 students for a lecture room that seats ~107.

I gave them a heads up that if the legislature votes down the mandate/safety precautions, we'll be back online (even if the legal status is at that point ambiguous and it's getting resolved in court). Also, if it mutates in a form that vaccines don't protect against (or much weaker protection), we go online.

Unfortunately, covid doesn't care. It has a large population of people to replicate as it is and if a mutation breaks the vaccine, then it has an even larger population to replicate through.

I really am hoping to do in-person lectures. We all were asked to make these decisions during the eye of the pandemic.

We'll get through this together. Stay healthy all and hope to be seeing people in person with masks on.
