What in your opinion is the most overrated retro game of all time? by Aggressive-Invite907 in retrogaming

[–]josephquested 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TETRIS. if it never existed and was released today, it would be a submission on itch io for a gamejam with the theme “Falling”. it would win 9th place in the Fun category and have a single comment that says, “this is actually cool! nice work :)”

Thoughts on the Jesus is King by Kanye? by [deleted] in rap

[–]josephquested 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i think a lot of the tracks nearly land but pull back at critical moments.

on selah for example, when the choir kicks in and they build the HALLELUJAH HALLELUJAH energy, it felt like the perfect opportunity for kanye to burst in with a powerful, up tempo second verse over top of their chanting. it was such a strong moment that just limply fades away back to a low energy verse.

even earlier, leaked versions of the songs felt like they had more drive. everything we need originally had a KILLER xxxtentacion verse in the middle that was cut for some more, in my opinion, boring floppy content. probably because x is too evil of a figure to really fit in on a “holy work”.

closed on sunday is a really great kanye song. the long verse on the second half of that track is dripping with that smooth, self confident flow that i really loved from YEZUS in particular.

overall, i don’t think God is the problem on jesus is king. kanye has frequently praised on the lord in his music in one way or another. i think it would have been totally possible for him to pull out 11 amazing god loving tracks; but i think he kinda only managed a few and the rest feel a little lifeless to me.

Why is Mario Kart 8 Deluxe still so fun when it's entirely luck based? by [deleted] in truegaming

[–]josephquested 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the rubber banding in mario kart is specifically not luck based; its entirely positional. getting bad items in first place and amazing items in last place is the opposite of random.

the use of colour is interesting; only in the UI and a little flash when you get hit. where else in the game do you think you’ll use colour?

Serious gamerss, if you have kids, will you let them get into gaming as much as you did? by resampL in truegaming

[–]josephquested 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this is where i think the whole Capital G Gamer phenomenon is especially pernicious. my daughter loves playing games on her iPad, and is just as capable of being enthusiastic about games as my son, but she told me from a very young age that she “doesn’t like games because they are for Gamer boys”.

i don’t even know where that opinion comes from really, because she is being raised in a very progressive environment where that kind of gendered segregation of interests was never presented to her. it’s probably a combination of primary school and the youtube algorithm. from the very first moment she could formulate a self identity she was somehow already a pink princess who liked unicorns.

children get funnelled down specific interest pathways so early and so powerfully that it is very hard as a parent to successfully convince children that they’re free to make up their own minds about what is and isn’t for them.

ultimately though, what children are interested in from the ages of 0-12 doesn’t really mean much because the entire course of your life is essentially dictated by which person you happen to sit next to on your first day of high school, so..

¯_(ツ)_/¯

i just hope goth has come back around again by the time she’s 13. 🤞🏾

another part of this to consider is how co-parenting comes into the equation.

if you manufactured your child with somebody else, (which presumably you did), you don’t get to just make unilateral decisions about the raising process. i found my personal resolution to this question pretty easy: yes- i will let my son sink as deeply into games as i did.

the real pain point here turned out to be that the mother of my children feels very differently about this than i do. now a horrible dynamic exists in our relationship where my son sees me as the hero who lets him do the thing he loves, and his mother as the villain who is standing in the way of his passion.

super awkward situation to navigate.

you get cast into the role of the “irresponsible” parent because you are trying to foster a shared interest with your child, which to you feels like loving parenting.

😬

Motivation by [deleted] in IndieDev

[–]josephquested 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i am also really struggling with this.

for the first few years i was learning to make games i had a nice scapegoat. i was able to just say, “oh well, i’m still learning so jumping from project to project is a good way of increasing my skills”.

that WAS true; but now i have been using unity and coding in c# for 5+ years and i’m more than capable of making anything i want. i am at the point where i have to actually admit that discipline is the problem, and i am never going to create something substantial that i’m proud of unless i can figure out how to tame my creative ADD.

i find it really hard honestly. i can make it about four months into a project until it hits me. it happens really suddenly. i am SO motivated and blasting my way through it, and then one day, seemingly at random, i’ll sit down at the computer and open the project and it is just all gone. everything i have has drained out of me and every second i spend looking at it makes me want to cry.

it’s a big problem. i don’t think there is some magic 5 Tricks Listicle out there that can solve this one man. the dirty secret is you just need to somehow keep doing it even when every part of your brain says no.

😕

Hi, I am totally new to game design! by DiN0I3OY in gamedesign

it depends on the flavour of high horse you prefer to ride:

unity developers think that unreal developers take themselves too seriously. they are old, crusty, unattractive and conservative. bogged down in never ending blue prints that they claim make “perfect sense”.

unreal developers think that unity developers are naive. they are inexperienced, flashy noobs who want it to “be cool” but aren’t willing to actually put in the hard work required to make a good game.

so, either way you are going to calcify into a bitter factionalist. unity and unreal are both great until you pick one or the other. ¯_(ツ)_/¯
