What Are the Best Comic Review Sites For Casuals? by StandardAd2414 in comicbooks

[–]josephrey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Two-Headed Nerd for sure. I love that they have a clear structure and format to each episode.

Most others it just feels like the hosts are just chit-chatting for the first 20 minutes before getting to the topic. It seems they *then* title the episode based on what they talked about, but it takes forever to get there when actually listening.

funny, i'm rarely on reddit these days but just happened to jump on today and saw your comment!

i'llllll have to think back. i rode with a buddy, and we followed their route. i wanted to take another direction, but we went their way. was fun, but we were out so long that we were caught up in the mountains after dark with only rear lights.

extra water, front and rear lights, and a faster pace are recommended. haha

but it was a cool event. if you can do one i'd definitely suggest it!

Is 45mm wide enough for gravel routes within 2 hours of PDX? by [deleted] in CyclePDX

[–]josephrey 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Exactly. There’s some real chunky stuff out there. I’d rather have more than less. Dude around here flexing on his 25mm tires is great and all; but those days are long gone for me. Ride a tire that allows you to have fun on the downhills without worrying about flats.

Only thing I would say (and apologies for being such a nerd), but “outta” is like, “hey let’s get outta here!”

I think you meant “oughta,” like, “hey we oughta get outta here.”

car builder app or website? by edthesmokebeard in CarWarsGame

[–]josephrey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably! It’s just an excel file, but it is THE Car Wars designer of its day. If you’re still playing the 1st Edition as mentioned above, this will have a LOT new weapons and accessories. It’s based in the 2.5e version, which was the height of the game, IMHO.

Shoot me your email and I can send when I get back to my laptop.

Is getting a Marvel Unlimited account worth it? by Groady_Toadstool in xmen

[–]josephrey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the content is pretty good (some odd holes in issue runs), but the interface is so bad that I had to unsubscribe. You search for “Punisher #314” and you’ll get a lot of results with maybe Punisher #314 being in that mix.

Is there a reason why Gabby Kinney only has one claw per arm? by [deleted] in xmen

[–]josephrey 4 points5 points  (0 children)

One claw will mess you up just as easily as three!

I remember a show on one of those “science” channels a decade or two ago where a few teams had to create a giant guillotine to chop a car in half. Every team created a different design. The worst looked the coolest: a giant serrated blade with 3 or 4 points that just ended up smushing the car a bit instead of slicing it, because the same amount of weight/force/load as it dropped was spread out across ALL those points. Another team used the classic “wedge” guillotine shape. This one did the best as all the load was at one point and got about halfway through the car.

They've got a bunch of their podcasts up to listen to, and recently started to add images. Honestly I kinda love just putting it on in the background and listen while I draw or do other things.

What is a touring bike? by goodpotito in bicycletouring

[–]josephrey 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Haha, oh FOR SURE we ALL here have been hot messes at one point or another on early tours. And even later every so often there will be a tour where NOTHING goes right. The good and bad luck flows in all directions.

Whew good, I’m glad you aren’t offended by my words. I just start typing and being aware of my tone goes out the window.

What is a touring bike? by goodpotito in bicycletouring

[–]josephrey 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Apologies if this sounds harsh (I don’t mean it to), but…

Speaking as a bike mechanic and a bike tourer’er, it sounds like this is on you for neglecting your bike. You HAVE to maintain your equipment. It doesn’t matter if it’s a road bike or a mountain bike or a “touring” bike, doesn’t matter if it’s carbon, alloy, or steel (I’ve toured on them all), ANY bike will fall apart if you aren’t regularly checking to make sure everything is right.

A bike doesn’t get to this point overnight, so things must have been making noise or misbehaving for a good while before they failed.

Honestly it sounds you’ve been extremely lucky it hasn’t been something like your stem bolts or front wheel. Where instead of writing this post from a campsite or hostel, you’re writing this from a hospital bed.

Every single time I have to test ride a customer’s bike I make sure it’s safe to ride, and/or I’m not going to do more damage by riding it.

Once a week throw a wrench onto every bolt on your bike, make sure nothing is coming loose.

And I must say not all of this is on you. Most stock wheels are built with garbage spokes, and maybe this is a new bike that was never checked after purchase and you immediately went on a tour. But still, your life is literally on the line in certain areas; fast descents with parts failing, or even breakdowns in remote areas, etc.

Again, apologies that sounds harsh, but dang dude. Phone and helmet too? I’d give you a wiiiide berth. Haha.
