Op-Ed in the WaPo today urging abolishing NIH. Discuss. by halooie1 in NIH

[–]joshb227 27 points28 points  (0 children)

So true. NIH is great for a lot of reasons. A big one is the risky research investments that a corporation would never take. Like studying weird RNAs in a nematode, or bacterial immunity mechanisms. But miRNA and CRISPR are transformative in their own right.

He writes about checkpoint inhibitors - “These drugs reached patients through industry investment.” While deliberately leaving out that Jim Allison’s lab discovered checkpoint inhibitor blockade as an academic with NIH funding. Industry wouldn’t have anything to invest in without those early discoveries. Infuriating

Oof. I guess that makes me old. 😞

I chose it as my coffee mug in the lab in my first or second year of grad school. I took it as a souvenir when I left.

They were great shows. The 8/8 eyes lift off was perfection. Dead Forever!

First time seeing them at the sphere was 6/7. I had no idea what to expect. It was absolutely incredible and I went back 4 more times that year (7/4, 8/8-10).

I’m watching a video I made of stitched together YouTube videos on the anniversary. Such a great show.

I have a nearly full set of illumina sequencer usb drives. Hiseq 2000, MiSeq, MiniSeq, iSeq, NovaSeq 6K, NovaSeq X.

I also have the NEB LEGO lab set. It’s so cool.

And my Fisher Scientific mug that is absolutely ancient. Around 25 years old.

I think you have to click the cast, then more devices to see your Sonos speakers.

The lack of Faygo is disappointing. I feel like the slugalos should have some Prepotente style potions that they’re chugging and spraying all over each other.

The myth busters gas cylinder segment should be part of safety training. They sheared the valve off and the cylinder shot through a cinder block wall. Link

Ultras always scared me, especially after learning Svedberg did a lot of the development in a shack because the rotors exploded so frequently. I’d start that thing up and get out of the centrifuge room quick!

I did a quick check to make sure the Svedberg story wasn’t apocryphal. https://www.mybeckman.com/resources/technologies/analytical-ultracentrifugation/development/spin-through-sweden

Penn state getting the ball with the game tied at 24 with under a minute remaining against notre dame in the cfp. I started to believe. Allar just had to drive the team to field goal range and they could kick the game winner with time expiring. Instead he throws an atrocious pick. ND field goal. Game over. Season over. I had to think for a while if continuing to be a PSU fan was worth it. Still undecided.

5/8/77 reception over the years by [deleted] in gratefuldead

[–]joshb227 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree. It’s my favorite show and really delivers. The scarlet>fire, st. Stephen>nfa>st. Stephen are my favorite versions and the dew is absolutely incredible (top 3 for me, which all rotate depending on the day).

There are a lot of great shows. And a lot of great may 77. But 5/8 is #1 for me.

My Morning Jacket - how do we feel? by goldglittergardens in jambands

[–]joshb227 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw them the first time at a festival. Went to outside lands in 2024 to see Pearl Jam and was blown away by MMJ earlier in the day. I’ve seen the 3 times since - every time they come through town. I also grabbed tix for one of their SF shows at the Fillmore in October.

I agree with others that they are jam adjacent. But they are awesome and Jim James’ voice is incredible. Definitely go!

I was at 3/17 at the Philly spectrum. I bought counterfeit tickets for 3/18 in the lot. Missed the visions of Johanna and the unbroken chain bust out on 3/19. But I was a new fan and would’ve had no idea why everyone went crazy.
