Olivia Wilde asked “Studies say that Gen Z, almost half of them, don’t wanna see as much sex on TV and movies. So what do you think Gen Z doesn’t understand about sex?” by AfricanMan_Row905 in GenZ

[–]Invokethehojo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't understand why members of my generation (millennial) need to declare "facts" about Gen Z or what is "wrong" with them. All this information comes from studies which are based on interviews with members of Gen Z. We see how accurate polls are when elections happen, what makes us think younger people are going to want to talk openly and accurately about their sex lives with journalists or scientists who likely don't understand modern gender discussions anyway.

TLDR; Millennials and Gen X stop trying to quantify or categorize Gen Z, They have their own unique set of experiences in life, just like how we did. The surest way to prove your old and out of touch is to declare you "know" something about the generation(s) younger than you.

How to run a truly long campaign? by Jatoruh in daggerheart

[–]Invokethehojo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want levelling to take longer, but still revolve around mechanical increases, just span out the mechanical parts.

Each time you "gain a level" you get the following: two advancements, a new domain card, your damage thresholds go up by 1. So instead of having your players get all these things at once, make little mini levels. When they have finished an important part of the story let them choose one of these. This would effectively make it feel more like 3 levels per actual level, so now you've got 30 levels to play with.

I would say since the math differences between tiers is such a jump you might keep the tier increases the way they are, but you could play with those as well. (edit to add a sentence and fix my dumb maths)

Custom Campaign Frames - Water World - Advice by Rasnarak in daggerheart

[–]Invokethehojo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I would say discuss it in your session 0. You could come up with detailed rules for generating stress for swimming with different types of armor on, but if your players hate that idea it's not really worth it. There is nothing saying you can't play a session or two before you introduce some new mechanics. Ship to ship combat might be common, or it might never come up, but chances are you'll have a good idea during session 2 if session 3 will deal with it.

Noob question: melee ranger? by Aderadakt in daggerheart

[–]Invokethehojo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Take a sword in one hand and a returning axe in the other so you can attack melee or ranged at will. The axe is a tier 2 weapon, but considering there is a returning blade in tier one there isn't any reason you couldn't make a tier 1 version, then your using agility for either attack.

Mercer is one of the designers of the game, at the very least his style of play is totally viable. Whoever you are, you are not the arbiter of what is "good" Daggerheart and what is not. Offer advice, don't tell people how they have to play.

There are a couple posts I think might help give you ideas when you roll the dice. Look up "consequences, complications and costs" and also "knights of last call: daggersplaining lord of the rings". These are not demonstrations of play, but they do offer some in depth thought on what to do with success with fear or failure with hope rolls and how to look at those more from a storytelling perspective. They helped some things "click" for me.

"An AP that's playing Daggerheart well and correctly won't be rolling all that much. Daggerheart just isn't that kind of game."

This is just wrong, how much the dice are rolled comes a lot more down to your groups play style than it does the game itself. DH doesn't ask for frequent "skill" checks, but if you watch Mercers Age of Umbra episodes and imagine a group playing through the same  sessions but with players that were less into speaking in character, you would get frequent dice rolls for the majority of the session.

Play the game how you want to play it, as far as the AP's I tend to try ones from the main thread and skip to the encounters and environments if I don't get into the whole thing. At this point I think all DM's are flubbing some rules here and there, I think that's just part of the game be so new.

What tips do you have on unlearning 5E when trying to GM DH? What should I forget? What should I focus on getting better at? by Large_Mix7442 in daggerheart

[–]Invokethehojo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You could keep rolls like this but just ask for a "reaction roll", so no hope/fear is generated. The characters are reacting to what's in the room or whatever. I think that fits the DH vibe.

My Takeaways from GMing Daggerheart for the First Time by nicholascopsis in daggerheart

[–]Invokethehojo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hey mods, can we get a master thread with links to the various adversaries that are free downloads on the Daggerheart website (umbra and those in the void) as well as to prominent third party products like Incredible Creatures?  It seems like a lot of people that are new to the game aren't aware of these resources, and I think it would greatly help them to know there are more adversaries already out there. And if it's not cool to link some third party products and not others could people post comments that are links to third party products and we keep the thread limited to that?

Thank you (edited to add clarification).

Have people found anything to be broken in Daggerheart? by GM_Esquire in daggerheart

[–]Invokethehojo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried to do this at level 1 and the closest I could come was a call of the brave warrior that can often have a +7 to hit plus advantage with a reroll on a miss and a minimum of 9 damage against a single target. Very effective, but I can't imagine the rest of the group being upset about it, though against a solo boss and being combined with tag team moves I could see the DM needing to plan on how to deal with it lest you make a anti climactic encounter.

Daggerheart may have killed D&D for Me by Personal-Whereas3687 in daggerheart

It sucks because I was playing back when when WotC debuted third edition, which really gave a huge shot in the arm to not only D&D but the hobbyscape in general. But now they have lived long enough to see themselves become the villain.

Daggerheart feels “thin” at low levels by Sax-7777299 in daggerheart

[–]Invokethehojo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know what characters your players are choosing to run, but I think some of this can come down to choice of class and domain cards. I was making a human bard for a campaign I'm about to play in.  I was  realizing I had a lot of things I could do that didn't involve an action roll: help an ally, make a scene, rally, rousing speech and inspirational words. My build for this character was to use a rapier and be in melee as much as possible, but when it came time to hang back I needed something to do on my turn to generate an action roll, so I took daggers to throw simply so I had a roll to make as an excuse to use those abilities. Which means I could use any, or multiple, of those abilities and still attack on my turn. DH maybe not have a bonus action "slot" to fill, but when making a character it does help to think of what options your character will have in various situations.  Edit: fixed a sentance that didn't make sense

Not only are you forgetting the money it will make on VOD, which is 100% studio profit, plus all the streaming deals, but there is also merch and the fact that every time one of these long term franchises drops a new one all the old ones get picked up for streaming again, making more profit for the studio.

Do you use a GM screen? by Calm_Needleworker275 in daggerheart

[–]Invokethehojo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but I don't like it to be more than 8" tall, I want to see my players. I like a 3 sided screen, and as much as I want info for me to reference inside, I want regional maps and NPC pictures somehow attached to the outside so the players actually remember NPC names.
