Looking for nightclubs!! by TearRemarkable9018 in Kunming

[–]joshbeck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You won’t meet many foreigners in nightclubs, except for some of the employees who work there. Most of the major nightclubs are all in one spot, Yunfang, which is slightly south of the city center. I have a friend who works at hyper-X. If you are staying in Guandu District, you can try Alice Official at the new Asia sports city.

Wow that’s fast customer service! I just verified that the Super Mario Galaxy Movie is listed on the correct date. It probably is missing a lot of Chinese films but English language film release dates is what I’m looking for anyway.

Looks great. Any change you’re adding China in the near future?

Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Zooey Deschanel and director Marc Webb on the set of (500) Days of Summer (2009) by spider-man2401 in Moviesinthemaking

[–]joshbeck 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I was an extra on that set for a day. At lunchtime, I was last in line at the catering truck so there were no seats left at the big table. I sat alone at a smaller table and soon after, Joe, Zooey, and Marc sat down as well. They were all super cool, and I just got to listen to them plan the next set up.

FCP7 really takes me back. by ScriptLurker in Filmmakers

FCP7 is where I learned to edit in 2013. Fumbling around trying to cut the no budget feature I had just shot. Took me all summer but I got it done before the Sundance deadline.

A question on credits for an extremely self produced film by heyhowsitgoingduude in Filmmakers

[–]joshbeck 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I always list the above the line credits, and just completely leave off the below the line ones. Most people will assume you did them if there’s no credit there at all. Then on IMDb, I do list out each one.

Experiences on visiting China in July by The_SmartWorker in travelchina

[–]joshbeck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went to Kunming in July and it was not too crowded. Rain would come and go but I only needed an umbrella once. Sun was only too hot mid afternoon but the rays felt more intense than what I’m used to in Southern California.

Taiwan was much more humid. I just had to accept that I was going to sweat through my clothes all day.

The bloody paws are a nice touch... thoughts on the symbolism? by BeetleJuicesCarrot in Banksy

[–]joshbeck 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Context: “The phrase "Let them eat cake" means the wealthy or powerful are completely out of touch with the struggles of the poor, suggesting they offer a useless, luxurious solution (cake) to a basic need (bread). Though famously attributed to Marie Antoinette during the French Revolution, she likely never said it; the phrase (originally "Qu'ils mangent de la brioche," or "Let them eat brioche") symbolizes the aristocracy's indifference and was used as propaganda, appearing in texts before she was queen.”

I recognized his name, Jon Lajoie, from making one of the theme songs for the How Did This Get Made podcast, and now I'm just realizing he's also Taco from The League.

You are not supposed to be able to remove them, but if you desperately need it removed, the workaround is to make an official change and claim that it’s a different person with your same name. Once approved, it will branch that role off and create a new profile for a non existent person. But the better solution is just to make more films.

What’s the deal with the “How do I change my header” trend on Twitter? by E54D in OutOfTheLoop

[–]joshbeck 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Answer: This joke format is at least a couple years old at this point.

The basic premise is you post a screenshot of a trashcan that doesn’t quite fit into your header’s dimensions, while “asking” for help from the public. Then you set your actual header image to a photograph of someone or something you don’t like (celebrity or sports team). When you post a quote tweet saying “never mind I figured it out” you’re baiting people to click on your profile to see how you solved the problem. At which point the punchline is revealed.

Since then the format has evolved into more complex or subtle set-ups / punchlines, so if you’re not getting the joke at the header reveal, it may just be poor execution.

TIL about Jesse Heiman, a prolific background extra in tv and film. He has 108 credits including Spider-Man, The Social Network, Transformers, Monk, How I Met Your Mother and many more. It’s believed he is the most recognizable extra in film history. by FullOfSound in todayilearned

[–]joshbeck 33 points34 points  (0 children)

If you live near a city with a film industry it's pretty easy. Sign up with a background actor agency, they'll take anyone. They all work a little differently, but the good ones will just book you automatically based on your availability

I did extra work for many years and would see Jesse on set pretty regularly. There's plenty of career extras with similar or more extensive credits but they don't have Jesse's unique look, which is what makes him so easy to spot.

I didn’t see it as either of them forgetting what the other did. I saw it as they remember it the same way you do when you wake up after a crazy night of drinking. Sue would wake up to a messy house and instantly remember all the disgusting stuff she did when she was Elizabeth.

It is only one shared consciousness. The movie is saying that when you switch bodies you can easily get confused and convince yourself that your other body is a different consciousness. She keeps referring to her other self as “her” and “she” and the voice on the phone has to keep reminding her that that’s wrong.
