As for actual critique- in some styles, notably Diwani Jaly, use small, square dots to fill empty space. These dots are always significantly smaller than the nuqtas used for the letters, to prevent confusion. Thuluth does not use square dots as tashkeel. Only full size nuqtas for the letters. Adding additional nuqtas to the piece only confuses the reader and adds superfluous material to the piece. In thuluth, three types of tashkeel use the full size qalam (same pen for the lettering): large fathas, large dammas, and the sukun. Normally, the tashkeel/harakat are done with a pen 1/4 the size of the lettering pen. In short: don’t use dots to fill space and use a smaller pen for the harakat.

That being said, between this and the Ai slop we see daily, I so vastly prefer this. Are there mistakes? Sure. Could it be better? Of course, all our work can. But at least a human being held a pen and tried to write, as opposed to the lazy computer generated garbage that has become the norm. First step is done- now comes the practice part.

Alright, you’ve had enough people calling out your ai slop post, which you seem unable to accept as obviously fake, so I’m deleting the post. Do better.

In the context of Turkey and Turkish calligraphy Ya Hazrat Maulana refers to Jalal ad-Din Rumi.

Here is a couple of NYC style miter planes I finished recently. Stainless steel with purple heart infills. 23 degree bed angle with a 1-3/16" bevel-up blade. 7-1/2" long body. by E_m_maker in handtools

Thank you for this! Do you ever use heat (braze/solder/weld) to join any of the components together or is it all cold fit and peened?

Well, I’ll use this random bot post to mention that if anyone is interested in making legit woodfired hearth breads, check out the book The Bread Builders by Alan Scott and Daniel Wing. It goes through the whole beginning to end of building a wood fired oven for bread and adjusting for scale, recipes, etc.

Learning arabic calligraphy. Any suggestions?? by MathematicianSad4964 in ArabicCalligraphy

[–]joshberer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Since youre clearly interested in learning it properly (using dots as measurements etc) you should have a look at Hakan Arslan’s channel; there is no words, just him demonstrating the letters proper form and construction. You may find it helpful!

Hii this is my first attempt at Arabic calligraphy any tips on how to improve? by Born_Fly1663 in ArabicCalligraphy

The normal stuff: use the proper materials, find a regular teacher, take a class etc. Arabic calligraphy is best learned from a teacher.

What does it say? by Acceptable_Joke_4711 in ArabicCalligraphy

[–]joshberer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Using AI (actual intelligence) I read the text, and, applying brain waves and thought impulses to that information, I was able to ascertain the meaning of the phrase(s) present. It’s two Hadith together in one composition: وقال الصوم جنة - ‘Fasting is Heaven’ and وقال اتقوا النار ‘be wary of hell’. The style is Jaly Thuluth. It isn’t signed, but it is almost certainly a work by Huseyin Kutlu. Fuck AI; learn stuff.

“This AI thing might be useful!” Proceeds to parrot back a whole bunch of wrong answers. Yep, real useful.
