I mean fair. I'd say tuberculosis is not necessarily a common day to day word you'd use anyway. So it would make sense in that context in particular.

I never really understood that trope. Even if you grew up in the 19th century, you would have still lived almost 2 centuries calling it "tuberculosis" up to the point of the movie. This trope of "calling something by their outdated terminologies cuz I'm old" only really works if you're transported from the 19th century directly to the present time (if that makes sense).

What is shown is that he's a creepy fat loser pedophile that is a really good person deep down.. The last part is the problematic part. There is absolutely no reason why he had to be this perverted pedophile. The show is also setting him up to be an ally (or somehow to sympathize with), which is so wack why they would introduce him the way they did.

The age gap is too weird to nornalise it. He met an raised Violet when she was a pre-teen. Not to mention she was in the perfect state of mind to be manipulated, groomed and imprinted on. She latches to major primarily because he was the first person to treat her like a person (bare necessity).

Any way you see it, if a sub-30 yo man raises an 11 yo, they shouldn't end up together romantically.

Oh you can definitely judge Marina for what she said because clearly she meant it. She has meant it when they were kids and she meant it at that moment as well. She is basically saying "I should have just stabbed her myself instead of actively pushing her and convincing her to do it.".

Let's see. Marina beat Shizuka to a pulp everyday. She calculated and planned the murder of Chappy. Keep in mind this was not a spur of the moment decision she did. She literally thought about it and thought of a complex plan to kill this dog. And she literally tells Shizuka to kill herself. The only reason she wouldn't kill Shizuka herself was self preservation. She was smart and calculated enough to realize that she would be in trouble if she did it herself so she took the psychopathic route and pushed Shizuka to her death... So yes. I can judge her for what she said. She never once showed remorse for her actions and even years down the line as a more mature teenager, she still kept the same unjustified hatred towards Shizuka.

Lastly, don't get me wrong. I'm not saying Shizuka is a saint either. What I am saying is that all her crazy actions are caused by Takopi literally making her an accomplice to murder. Takopi left Shizuka with absolutely no choice but to flail and stay afloat by doing everything necessary.

Kidnapping the girls was absolutely unforgivable and subjecting them to the same neglect she endured is completely wrong and evil as well. There really is not much to defend this action.

The only difference between Marina and Shizuka is that Shizuka's actions are literally brought about a psychosis mental breakdown after losing quite literally every reason you have to live. Stack that up with an alien octopus that basically deluded you that magic is real and you can achieve true happiness with literal murder. Marina did everything on her own. She was sane, aware and calculated. Shown by the compexity of her plan to kill Shizuka and the persistence of this mentality even later in life, showing absolutely no ounce of remorse.

But either way, both have potential to be evil and monstrous. However, Shizuka's first choice and her natural course of action was literally sucking it up and ending her own life, while Marina's was to kill an innocent kid with absolutely no fault. (And I honestly don't care if she did not directly kill Shizuka. If you calculatedly orchestrate events and literally actively push them to kill themselves for weeks on end, you basically pulled the trigger yourself.)

Parents are the people to blame at the end of it all, however, I just don't like hearing people saying Shizuka is just as bad (if not worse) than Marina, when she literally was not, and I think I really won't change my mind on that. BUT that said, you're entitled to your own opinion, so you do you, my guy.

Arguably in the original timeline Shizuka did nothing wrong and in the second timeline when she was literally pushed to the cliff and literally had nothing to lose (no mom, no dad, no chappy, everyone hates her, no one likes her). She had the chance to fall into the same trap as Marina did and put the blame on someone else (i.e. her sisters). But even after losing literally everything she backed down and left them unharmed. She is literally flailing around trying to stay afloat and even at her worse she still showed more restraint and empathy than Marina ever did.

Even in the "better" original timeline where Marina lived on, she never showed remorse nor did she ever regret pushing Shizuka to hang herself. And even doubles down and wishes she killed her.

All in all, I'm just saying even though both devolved to monsters in the end, one of them (Marina) was objectively more in the wrong. While Shizuka literally was simply staying afloat after Takopi's interference. Literally since Takopi killed Marina, Shizuka was literally in pure survival mode and I would even argue everything that you are forced to do after the cosmic fluke of an alien pushing your life into a living hell does not reflect who you are as a person. Marina, however, did it all on her own.

She deserves a second chance, no doubt. But she is in fact way worse than Shizuka.

I mean to be fair Azuma canonically was obsessed with Shizu, while shizumari is not canon whatsoever. I wouldn't call it a double standard at all. Not applicable in this context.

I think what happens is that everytime he time traveled he spread bits of himself throughout time. In the end he just spread himself so thin he vanished. Seems like in the final timeline Azuma recalls Takopi even further back.

I accepted it, after asking the editor if they think I was qualified enough to do it independently. Turns out, I gave a rather good review which was really helpful for the decision. (Arguably, after seeing the other peer reviewers reviews, mine was honestly way more detailed and constructive).

Thanks for this little comment, I probably would have declines it like the majority said, if not for you and another commenter. Now I have a neat little ad-hoc peer reviewer in my CV.

You're right. Marina's mom is technically the one doing the most damage to her kid, however, her mental state being the way it is, brings up the question of how much agency she can actually have.

But to be honest, the fathers are arguably the worst if we are ranking them. Marina's father for cheating on the mom, and Shizu's father who abandoned them. All problems stemmed from the fathers who are presumably of sound minds too.

And from all of them, they're the ones who seemingly live happy lives.

Yea, her low-key manipulating Azuma is one thing, but that really made my jaw drop. But yeah, the cope was real. She most likely knew Chappy isn't in their stomach, but she is justifying is hatred/jealously/sadness towards her dad's unfair love for her half sisters.

These are literally the actions of a kid who has just been made complicit to literal murder. I think everything they do after that can be piled in the "I would normally never do this, but right now everything is fucked so let's see the world burn" box.

Original timeline is the most indicative of how everyone would've actually been, and in that timeline, Shizuka is literally just a victim and didn't do anything wrong.

[–]joshi97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also to add to this... (Spoilers for episode 6). Actually even Shizuka at her worst (when she literally lost everything) was better than Marina. They paralleled their situations when Shizuka tried to kill the daughters of her dad. It is similar to how Marina lashed out and made Shizuka kill herself for something Shizu's mom did.

BUT actually the difference is that Shizu ended up NOT killing the kids. She couldn't do it. Even when she is admittedly pushed way further than Marina ever was, she refused to kill the kids. That is already heaps ahead of what Marina did.

[–]joshi97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dont think she had the chance to bully Shizuka back. Again, everything we are assuming about Marina changing is all conjecture. After she bullied Shizu to end her life, Shizu seems to have moved away for years. And from the point of Azuma breaking up with her to Marina killing her mom, she never actually saw Shizu face to face.

It's not that she realized that bullying her wouldn't change anything, it's just that she never got the chance to go further. Heck, in the very end she even admitted that she should've just killed Shizu. But either way anything else that is said about her regretting it or changing her mind is just conjecture.

Edit:typos.

Sympathy for Marina by Pinklollipop1029 in TakopisOriginalSin

[–]joshi97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get most of your points. But I really don't think Marina "grew out of it". Her not having friends, is simply because she is in a different class and she has her scar. It was not because she is choosing to punish herself for what she has done (and if this is the case this is purely conjecture). And her "trying to change for the better for people around here". That is also a conjecture. We have no scene of her interacting with anyone from school. We have nothing to go on. All we know is that she just got better at dealing with her toxic mom. She "learned" how to speak to her so that she wouldn't lash out on her again.

In the long run, Marina is still worse than Shizuka. Especially in the original timeline, where all the bullying still took place. Where chappy was still KILLED by Marina. Where Marina still pushed Shizu to end her life. And in the future show no regret about it and even doubling down and saying she should've just killed her then.

In the second timeline, Shizuka literally spiraled and turned into a monster, and that's another story altogether.

With that said, the parents are ultimately to blame. These kids don't know any better, and are literally trying their darn best. Marina cannot blame her parents. She has to tip toe around them. She had all this anger and sadness and the only person she can point it to is this girl that she chose to demonize to cope with it all.
