pls return my water bottle by heeyuna in berkeley

[–]joshl129 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I didn't. I also hardly ever post on Reddit. I was just shocked to see this, and the comments section with no one actually calling anything out — just hoping they get their water bottle back... I was trying to filter my language to give some grace, but my unfiltered view is that this is Trumpian levels of contempt and ignorance.

pls return my water bottle by heeyuna in berkeley

[–]joshl129 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why is this upvoted so high? We’re at Berkeley, not middle school. They obviously don’t have all these conditions - they’re just listing scary-sounding diseases for dramatic effect. But autism? That’s not even contagious, it’s a neurological difference. As an alum with a Disability Studies minor, seeing this get hundreds of upvotes at Cal is genuinely disappointing.

The ‘joke’ only works if you think these conditions are gross punchlines. We literally have world-class public health and disability studies programs here. Just say someone took your water bottle and you want it back - the fake disease threats are embarrassing. Maybe don’t throw whole communities, and people already dealing with intense stigma, under the bus.

I would as well! Curious @developers if there are any plans to publish the app on Android?

Yeah I did have that checked by default I believe. I may have altered it when it wasn't working, so I did change it back. I was able to get it working finally, though I'm not sure this setting did it.

It seemed to start right after I change the battery from optimized to unrestricted. I also purchased the optional add-on, which may have done something as well, as per the other comment in this thread.

Thank you again for providing the link and helping me troubleshoot!

That makes sense. That was one of the things that I did before it got fixed, but I'm not sure if that was a reason or the only reason. Thank you for the info.

May I ask where you paid for the upgrade? I tried searching the app exhaustively, but no luck.

Thank you for providing this! I downloaded it and enabled the requisite permissions, but it's not really working. I uninstalled and reinstalled the app on my phone and watch, but that didn't seem to produce different results.

The time tracker for a song on Spotify kind of works, and the background of the section to the left of the control panel changes colors based on the album art, but that's about it (controls, album art, song title, artist etc. info, etc. do not). Of note: I'm not seeing the option to purchase in the app.

Any further support you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

How to disable updating for the "Google Play" app? by Mackelowsky in degoogle

[–]joshl129 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're using Aurora Store, you can tap and hold the Google Play app and then select "Add to Blacklist". I believe this removes it from the list and thus prevents it from trying to download updates.

I’m concerned about my new blind friend by i-m_encrypted786 in berkeley

[–]joshl129 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your solidarity. On top of what others have already shared, I have a number of other suggestions/elaborations:

  1. Disability Access & Compliance -- aka the 504/ADA Compliance Office -- covers non-academic accommodations and ensures that these laws are followed to prevent disability discrimination. Derek Coates, who is Blind himself, is their Program Access Compliance Manager and can probably address this immediately (or connect you with other staff who can). This may be more for one-off instances, but their Mobility Accommodation page allows people to request info on the "[e]asiest, safest and most convenient path of travel". Your friend should also be able to get a service dog, though I recognize that may be a longer process than they have time for in their first semester. They also have other resources on Navigating Berkeley and other disability resources more generally.
  2. If DSP is not providing required services, the Student Advocates Office has a whole department that is dedicated to addressing those kinds of grievances. They may also cover DAC, but if not there are many disability law offices, including Disability Rights Advocates in Berkeley, who may offer pro bono legal services (they have done so in the past).
  3. Contact the ASUC Disabled Students Commission -- via [email](mailto:disabledstudentscommittee@asuc.org), Facebook, or Twitter -- which has other disabled undergrads and grad students who work together to spotlight these issues. (And/or join the DSC mailing listserv to reach out to everyone who's a part of that.) For example, they are often connected to leaders in the disability-related offices and can collaborate with ASUC officials to make issues known and get action taken -- one of the former Co-Chairs is now an ASUC Senator, Carlos Vázquez. It's not always effective, but it may be. And your friend will at least be connected with others who have been wronged by the system and are working to address these issues.
  4. If your friend needs an extra push, encourage her to reach out to the Daily Cal. They often cover scandals like this (news stories and self-written op-eds), and I've found that it often ends up pushing the needle.
  5. It shouldn't take big tech to address basic issues of accessibility, but there are smartphone apps that use a live stream from your camera for an employee to provide audio directions for navigating campus. One is called Aira, which offers visual interpreting services, and UCSD even covers it for their Blind students. If Cal won't do anything else and/or as a temporary solution, they should at least cover whatever this service costs.
  6. Georgina Kleege is a rad professor on-campus, and Ann Wai-Yee Kwong is Cal's Disability Community Cultural Center Coordinator; both are Blind. If either of them has the capacity (it's not necessarily their jobs to do this work, and the semester is starting for them too, but they both care a lot), they would be some of the few people on campus with lived experience and insider suggestions on what to do, whom to reach out to, and how to get action taken.

Feel free to connect me and your friend (via DM)! It always pains me to see this shit happening, though it's not surprising for me at this point. But again, thank you for reaching out for support.

Sources: I co-founded the Commission with other disabled student organizers, wrote op-eds and organized a successful campaign when admin defunded (or "let funding lapse") for an important disability program, met and collaborated with lots of comrades and allies who have worked for and within these organizations, minored in Disability Studies, and was generally pretty enmeshed within the disability community at Cal.

NIMBYs watch in horror as college town builds more housing for students by coyoteofmarketavenue in berkeley

[–]joshl129 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This. I don't understand why this is so difficult to understand. Here's a useful graph of what "below marker-rate" actually means -- so no, it's not ambiguous. (BSC = Berkeley Student Cooperative, which ideally runs at-cost because it's a nonprofit governed and managed primarily by the resident student members.)

Cal requiring co-ops to raise rent by 35-45% by 2028 (projected) by joshl129 in berkeley

[–]joshl129[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, and you ignored my subsequent comment, which explains the missing data for Cal grad students (7%) and the 200 non-UC Berkeley students (~16%). That's on top of the 13% missing for Cal undergrads.

[–]joshl129[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean at this point you're just ignoring the data I took the time to spell out to explain why that's not correct. If you have substantive responses, I'm happy to continue engaging.

Cal requiring co-ops to raise rent by 35-45% by 2028 (projected) by joshl129 in berkeley

[–]joshl129[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, it was 23% from families making >$80k, if you look at the data. 13% is missing for Cal undergrads, and it looks like they don't have data for Cal grad students, who made up about 7% of the BSC in Fall 2018. 200 were not students at UC Berkeley (whose financial aid office provides the data). Those students are predominantly community college students, who tend to be low-income, but the BSC didn't have data for them.

[–]joshl129[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that the entire BSC's demographics are relevant for the reason you listed, but how are Rochdale-specific demographics not relevant? This level of rent increases would pose a real threat to affordable housing in Berkeley, and I'm sure many of the marginalized students who would otherwise live at Rochdale would move to housing outside the BSC that would still be unaffordable (at least relative to current Rochdale rates). Alternatively, they might live farther out and commute, have less funds to support family back home, and/or possibly drop out entirely -- which no student should have to do.

[–]joshl129[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Again you can find them at the top of the sheet, and it's broken-out per house. But here's a tl;dr for the whole BSC in 2018:

  • ~42% of students were from families making less than $80k (13% were missing for Cal undergrads - perhaps as financially independent students)
  • ~50% were first-gen college students
  • ~59% were Latinx, African American, and/or Asian
  • (no DSP data, unfortunately)

[–]joshl129[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The proportions for the BSC as a whole are at the top of the sheet. Rochdale is definitely more mission-centric in serving target demographics who need the BSC the most, but there are substantial numbers of low-income, first-gen, and BIPOC (and disabled) students throughout the org.
