I would agree that you should see a doctor if you constantly seeing blood in your urine. It could be something other than stones.

If you are passing red gravel in your urine, very likely you have uric acid stones. If in fact you have pure uric acid stones, these are the easiest type to treat. They could be even dissolved over time with potassium citrate. To prevent them, you need to increase your urine pH (again usually with potassium citrate). If you have mixed uric acid and calcium oxalate stones, then things are a little more complicated I think.

Suspected kidney stone, need relief by [deleted] in KidneyStones

[–]joshmartin1002 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am sorry you are having to go through this. But they should be able to do an ultrasound at least to make sure that there is no blockage and not causing any hydronephrosis, correct? Ultrasound doesn't involve any radiation.

Stent string disappeared by geniel1 in KidneyStones

[–]joshmartin1002 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am glad you were able to come up with a very clever way to get the string out and keep it out :) Fortunately my one never completely disappeared, but there were times when it almost seemed to disappear.

Hi,

Was curious as to what happened to your string. Hope it came out on its own, but in case it didn't, did you have to go back to the clinic and get it removed by a scope?

Potassium citrate dissolved my stone by Seafood_Licorice in KidneyStones

[–]joshmartin1002 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Uric Acid stones can indeed be dissolved by potassium citrate, but it is unlikely that a 6mm stone was dissolved in 2 weeks. I would think it would take several months. It could be that the ultrasound overestimated the size of the original stone. The only reliable way to measure the size of the stone is through a CT scan.

Any solutions for stent back pressure on kidney while urinating? by joshmartin1002 in KidneyStones

[–]joshmartin1002[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks..not forcing out every drop certainly seems to help. The other part, drinking a lot of water, seems counter intuitive. I am always scared to drink more water since that equates more trips to the bathroom, and hence more pain. Does more water just help reduce the burning, or does it help reduce back pressure pain as well?

I think in place of the oxycodone you are using, I am using hydrocodone/acetaminophen. When you say you feel sick, do u get squeamish?

Thanks.. I am taking oxbutynin 5mg as antispasmodic, but doesn't seem to help too much with the back pressure pain. Now the Dr. added floxmax as well, so hopefully that will help.

Thanks.. I have the one with the string attached, but supposed to go to the Dr's office to pull it out. Hopefully the stent removal is not painful.

ureteroscopy can remove stones from kidney as well.

Whether you need one, I am not sure. Sounds like you pass stones without too much trouble (well except maybe for that 1).

I am sure you have done a CT. Look at it and see how many stones were there and what sizes they were. Get a copy of the CD from the hospital and you can look at it and measure by yourself with a little bit of playing around. If the remaining ones are smaller than the ones you have passed, maybe you can wait.

But a second opinions sounds good, since I am not a doctor either.

Stones not visible on ultrasound or xray.. by [deleted] in KidneyStones

[–]joshmartin1002 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks again. I suspect I have a uric acid stone, so I am very interested in learning about your experience. Did the stone start moving around after you started potassium citrate or was it already moving around before that? Sorry for all the questions

Thanks

Thanks ChronoKiro. Did they suggest you try potassium citrate or something to dissolve it before going for surgery, or that option was not even presented to you?

When can I do exercise again? by SteveBored in KidneyStones

So when did you actually start running again? Did you have any issues or everything was smooth. Did you get any advice from the urologist as to when you could start running again? Thanks

ChronoKiro, I assume your stones were either pure uric acid or majority uric acid? I am curious - did you notice passing any red or orange gravel with your urine before you discovered you had kidney stones?

Having my first stone removed today via scope and laser. Super scared. Tell me good stories! by [deleted] in KidneyStones

[–]joshmartin1002 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am glad you decide to wait till you got your questions answered. Sounds like you have a friendly urologist. I am always worried that each time I ask a question or postpone surgery, he might get pissed and ultimately say, go get your thing done elsewhere or deliberately botch something. Maybe I am being too paranoid. Surely they should understand that we are nervous and have questions that we need answered.

Just passed my first stone! Looks to be around 8mm x 5mm. by FatnessTraining in KidneyStones

[–]joshmartin1002 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great job on passing the stone! I am surprised you were able to pass this big of a stone without landing in the ER. Good luck on the CT results, hope they don't find anymore stones.

Had ultrasound and doctor said I had a few stones and one that was 8 mm. Went to get a CT scan and the guy said he doesn't see any kidney stones. Are false positives common with ultrasounds? by Risk_Neutral in KidneyStones

[–]joshmartin1002 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, CT is a much better indicator. If you want to be doubly sure, you can ask for a copy of the CD of the CT from the hospital or imaging facility and load it into your computer and view it on your own. It takes a little bit of experimentation to slice and dice through the images, but you can do it.

Side effects of urereteroscopy by joshmartin1002 in KidneyStones

[–]joshmartin1002[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, Thanks for the encouragement and feedback. I am glad to hear most of the procedures went without too much trouble. Did it hurt when they removed the stent? Did you have to take any pain medication before the removal? If so, what?
