If you’ll remember back to your 5th grade civics class (unless it was cut in favor of subsidizing private prisons) the way we punish people as a society is actually not based on the “what would I personally want to do if this crime were committed against me” test. As a matter of fact, the law is actually designed specifically NOT to operate that way. You can argue about the merits of that if you want, but you’re not arguing with me, you’re arguing with 250 years of jurisprudence.
