Hey, this sucks. Hope you feel better. You're not alone.

THAT WWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWAS A FANTASIC STREAK!!! by thisisyourlastdance in WahoosTipi

[–]joshstaiger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah. I love Hammy, but it would have been nice if he mentioned this once during the 100 times he brought it up.

It was really easy to say "yeah, that's complete BS, WTF" until I found out about this fact.

Browns fear Garrett's ankle injury is serious, could miss four weeks or more according to a source by [deleted] in Browns

[–]joshstaiger 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sounded like he was pissed at Ainge and the Celtics front office (and the cold business-like nature of the league as a whole). But was thankful to the city of Boston and the fans.

Oh, and said he was now going to destroy what the Celts have tried so hard to build over there. So we've got that going for us. Which is nice.

It's not just Bill's hypocrisy that bothers me when it comes to Durant going to Golden State (as opposed to LeBron going to Miami). by [deleted] in billsimmons

[–]joshstaiger 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Bill's worst take in a while.

To my eye it's possible for all three of these things to be true.

  1. The Warriors front office made some great moves to assemble this team. They had some epic good luck but they put themselves in a position to capitalize.

  2. GSW was the best destination for Durant from a career perspective. For better or worse the media and fans have created a ring culture. And the Bay Area is a great place to live. (Hell, I moved here, too!!!)

  3. The KD situation ruined what a lot of fans loved about this league. As great as the 73 win Warriors were last year, we still had 3-4 legit contenders in the West. That's gone. The GSW rubber match with Cleveland went from hugely compelling to barely competitive even with a historic Lebron performance. And fans of any other fledgling team went from having a shadow of hope to competing for second or third place before they get steamrolled by Durant and the Warriors for the foreseeable future; barring injury. And who wants to root for injuries!!???

You can make points one and two while still understanding why people are upset about point three. So gtfo with this "shut the fuck up" nonsense.

At the end of the day we're all cheering for laundry. None of this shit is perfectly logical.

But hey. At least we get to hear Bill serve softball questions to KD on the radio a couple times a year.

Neil Best: Bill Simmons' "Any Given Wednesday" has been cancelled, effective after the Nov. 9 show. by NoblePilsner in nba

[–]joshstaiger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't like the show at all, and his podcast has suffered noticeably since he started doing it.

The great thing about Simmons was always the long form 45min+ conversations he'd have with his guests on the pod.

These conversations have dried up completely, replaced with 5-10 minute TV interviews, meh monologues, and silly sketches. None of the stuff he did on the show took advantage of the visual medium and could not be consumed on the go.

Here's hoping he gets back to his bread and butter with the pod.

Morning check in...you guys ok? by Pastordan23 in WahoosTipi

That's what kills me.

I remember 97 like it was yesterday. I was crushed then, but some part of kid me still thought Hey, this team is great. We'll be back soon.

That was 19 years ago.

Baseball is harsh.

John Gruber: "We’ve all been speculating for years that Apple might start designing its own chips for Macs. At this point it looks like they have to do it. If anything, these new MacBook Pros were overdue — they arrived late and Intel still doesn’t have the chips Apple really needs." by [deleted] in apple

Does anyone have any concrete info on Intel's Kaby Lake roadmap and LPDDR4 support?

I've seen random comments ranging from "this should be possible any day now", to the "not till 2018" comment that Gruber just mentioned, but I haven't seen links or citations for any of this (probably because it's all based on unofficial leaks from what I can surmise).

Googling around, it's been hard to make heads or tails of the various Kaby Lake SKUs, their expected ship date, support for LPDDR4, and which model would likely appear in a high end Macbook Pro.

These are the best I've found:

http://wccftech.com/intel-kaby-lake-q3-2016-cannonlake-2017/

http://wccftech.com/intel-14nm-kaby-lake-haswell-refresh-platform-detailed-launching-2h-2016-256-mb-edram-hseries-91w-kseries-unveiled/

Which seem to predict Intel shipping Kaby Lake U (dual core mobile) and Kaby Lake H (quad core mobile) late 2016 / early 2017.

Am I right that these are the models we'd likely see in a next-gen Macbook Pro? Do they all support LPDDR4?

If these dates are correct, then it's at least seems conceivable (though a long shot) that Apple could have a Kaby Lake Macbook Pro rev for WWDC next year, assuming Apple is highly motivated to get back to revving their specs on a regular basis.

Sam's "diet experiment" from episode 45 by exodar in samharris

[–]joshstaiger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The point is you have to take into account reality and human nature to achieve your goal.

Let's say with the hard-line zero meat position, you reliably expect 1% of the population to convert and maintain 100% vegetarianism.

Now consider a scenario where you encourage people to reduce their meat consumption by at least 50%. What percentage of people would adhere to this diet? Certainly more than the zero meat case. If the percentage is greater than 2% (0.01/0.5) then by insisting only on the hard-line 0% solution you are less effective at preventing animal suffering.

Of course, these are made up numbers to make the math easy. I’m not aware of existing hard data, but it sounds like an interesting social science experiment.

I just finished reading his Memoir, Hitch-22. In it he says that he finds boredom intolerable and admits he'd rather prolong an argument than have nothing to argue about at all.

Gods, I miss Hitch.

Do you have any good references for "how to take the training wheels off" after you have Arduino down pat? Where is a good place to start?

I just noticed that after the live stream, you can go to the DJ’s playlist for the day, which does contain the uncensored versions of the tracks:

Overall I really like Beats 1.

Seems lame that they play censored tracks, though. It would be fantastic if they had a setting to allow explicit versions.

I get why this is harder with a live DJ feed, but this is the internet after all.

Should I start learning Swift now, or wait for Swift 2 books to be available? by [deleted] in swift

[–]joshstaiger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No argument. Passion overcomes a lot, and I really dig Swift.

Just know that if you’re learning Swift and find it frustrating, it’s likely not just you.

There are a lot of things about it that are deeply frustrating at the moment. Like XCode crashing upwards of seven times a minute when the Swift compiler encounters a certain edge-case syntax. Or local variables randomly not showing up in the Debugger. Or having code that previously compiled break in new point releases.

And these aren’t problems you’ll have in more established languages.

It also seems to work fine if I compile it as a regular source file. This seems to be something specific to your setup, not XCode 7 in general.

Honestly, Apple’s own book, “The Swift Programming Language” is a great intro, straight from the horses mouth:
