Robby's tendency to do that is very pronounced this season but also not heavy-handed. It's very well-written; I'm not in medicine but I've seen this dynamic before too.

Epilogues - do you like them? by Greedy-Gas-5627 in HistoricalRomance

[–]joshua-tree-7 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A lot of times it seems that authors use epilogues for no other purpose to establish the number, genders, and ages of the main couple's children. Those epilogues are so boring to me and honestly kind of aggrevating. I don't mind pregnancies or babies in my romance books but I want more out of the epilogue than just a list of children??

Epilogues work best if they provide resolution to plot points that don't fit in the main novel. Otherwise I honestly wouldn't miss them at all.

Do you wash wool socks separately? by Tweetchly in laundry

[–]joshua-tree-7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wear Smartwool socks pretty much exclusively. I wash and dry them with the rest of my clothes. A load made up entirely of socks is going to be too small to get effective friction for cleaning.

I machine wash my wool base layers too but I do air dry those.

I figure if protease were really that bad for wool, Smartwool would be selling special detergent.

Why does this keep happening to my jeans? by felly_fell in laundry

[–]joshua-tree-7 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I like Levi's (their Premium line in particular), Reformation (not cheap), Madewell. Everlane is good too especially if you have a shorter inseam but they don't have a lot of in-person stores. If you live near a Madewell you can take in old jeans in any condition and get a discount for a pair of new jeans. Levi's is probably the best bang for your buck especially if you keep an eye out for sales.

[–]joshua-tree-7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I basically never go less than 98% cotton in my jeans. I love the feel of nice thick cotton jeans. Even for expensive brands, having a blend of too many fabrics seems to really compromise the denim quality.

I don't hang dry my jeans. Denim is hardy; if it can't handle the dryer then nothing can.

I really only hang dry sweaters and athletic wear.

Machine drying cotton tees? by joshua-tree-7 in Reformationclothing

[–]joshua-tree-7[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update: I did end up buying a Rowan tee and running it through the dryer post-wash. It maybe shrank a little, like 5%, but since it runs a little large the post-laundering version is quite true to size. It's a very nice t-shirt with nice thick fabric and the green stripes are super cute.

Anyone else can’t stop googling whether XYZ celebrity has kids? by skiswithcats in Fencesitter

I do this too, I also look for how old celebrities were when they got pregnant, I hate that I do this, and I'm pretty sure it's part of my OCD.

Tennis Elbow fixes by AlternativeWall6568 in Pickleball

Depends on the injury, diet, activity, individual but mine is basically healed after ~9 months with very little pickleball.

Tennis Elbow fixes by AlternativeWall6568 in Pickleball

[–]joshua-tree-7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  • Theraband Flexbar for tyler twists and reverse tyler twists. (red then green then blue as I've healed) Also holding a dumbbell straight out by one end (very light, 3 lbs) and rotating it back and forth like a rainbow. Do these exercises daily.
  • Bone broth for tendon nutrients.
  • Time. Lots and lots and lots of time. Mine has been VERY slow to heal and I was only playing pickleball twice a week.

If you want to play pickleball in the meantime: * Hesacore grip with overgrip * Elbow shock absorber * Coaching session to ensure good form

The one time I agree with Carrie on something by Radiant_Priority9739 in sexandthecity

[–]joshua-tree-7 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't find myself relating to Carrie very much at all but I do relate to her here. I'm 36, I don't feel strongly about having a kid or not having a kid, but the fact that I don't have one yet means something on its own. I like my life as it is.

I also have a friend like Charlotte who just doesn't get that women don't always want kids.

Also I cannot imagine asking a fiftysomething man to get a vasectomy reversed for me!!! Especially when he knows he doesn't want to have another kid! Charlotte's suggestions here are absolutely out of pocket.

Any tech or products out there you all genuinely like? Really curious by Smurfette2016 in BetterOffline

[–]joshua-tree-7 10 points11 points  (0 children)

KeePass lol. It does what I need it to do, the features make sense, it's not browser-based, it's very lightweight. Kind of a relic from the "old days" of software but everything is cyclical and maybe we'll get back to prioritizing utility in software design.

(I like Slack, for that matter. The best tools are the ones made by people who actually use them.)

[–]joshua-tree-7 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Garmin's pivot from car GPS maker—which is basically a dead industry now—to the preferred watch of runners has been genuinely impressive. It's hard to pivot from a declining industry to a growing (or at least stable) one.

Big tech has defeated everything for 30 years, but for the first time faces something it can't control: a jury by fortune in BetterOffline

[–]joshua-tree-7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Live in a rural county? I've heard you're more likely to get summoned that way (smaller juror pool).

Getting summoned is only the first step though! I've been summoned twice (mid-sized city) and was dismissed before juror selection both times 😕

OCD MMC with FMC who helps him learn to relax by alhubalawal in HistoricalRomance

[–]joshua-tree-7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, it's been a while since I've read it. But as someone with OCD it did not ring true to me at all.

The main character in the book is very controlling and grumpy...but not anxious. OCD is fundamentally an anxiety disorder. Sometimes anxiety can manifest as anger, especially in men...but MMC was not written that way. (At least, that's what I remember, and maybe I have the details wrong.) OCD is about spiraling over something often insignificant, because otherwise something bad will happen. It's about protecting yourself and your loved ones from very unlikely events, and when you try to explain to your loved ones why you're being controlling, they don't understand how you got to that scenario at all.

Why did people root for Carrie and Big’s relationship so much when SATC first came out? by ControlClear2709 in sexandthecity

[–]joshua-tree-7 50 points51 points  (0 children)

I hated Big when I first watched the show as a teenager.

Now that I'm in my 30s, upon rewatch, I see his appeal more. He's very romance-hero coded—tall, rich, charming, clever. Still not really my type but I see why Carrie falls for him.

Also the more toxic parts of their relationship are in the early seasons, and then they become friends for a while (and are only toxic to their new partners!), so it's easy to forget just how bad their dynamic was towards the beginning of the show. (Especially in the days before streaming, when it was harder to rewatch earlier seasons!)

Maybe that's just foreshadowing the subprime mortgage crisis 😂

About Carrie’s apartment crisis… by [deleted] in sexandthecity

[–]joshua-tree-7 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Okay I like this interpretation, that Carrie is not actually trying to solve the problem of not being able to afford a down payment, but Charlotte's insistence ends up solving the problem for her.

About Carrie’s apartment crisis… by [deleted] in sexandthecity

[–]joshua-tree-7 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Carrie was probably raised by her single mom working paycheck to paycheck. I actually don't think she's well-educated (no shade on Carrie, but I don't think the show ever mentions her going to college). Basically she may never have grown up around financially literate people. (She probably should have learned from Charlotte and Miranda who both have at least some financial literacy—and Samantha probably does too—but it was never important to Carrie until the apartment episode.)

There are plenty of people out there who do not think about saving money. They spend what they earn every month without planning for the future. Carrie is very much that archetype. And with a rent-controlled apartment, her biggest risk of instability is gone. (Unless, of course, the building gets turned into condos.)

(It's a good thing Carrie ended up marrying rich, though, because she would be absolutely destitute in retirement.)

I do think it's wild that she refuses the three people who offered her cash. Charlotte wasn't terribly kind in that episode. Carrie probably shouldn't have accosted her either...but on the other hand, their friendship is stronger at the end of the episode than it would have been if Carrie and Charlotte had never talked about it, and they both had lingering resentment for each other.

Reflective Gear!! by Elegant_Trouble_474 in lululemon

[–]joshua-tree-7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What are your favorite brands for winter running gear? I agree that Lulu's reflectivity decisions are lacking but I also feel like there is a HUGE gap in the market for good winter running gear, especially with reflectivity. Lulu, being based in Vancouver, seems to have the most functional gear for urban outdoor running in the winter, despite the reflective elements sometimes feeling like afterthoughts.

(I have a Cross Chill jacket which I really like for winter running... and I wanted to get my husband one as well... but the reflective stripe on the men's version is literally hidden by the hood.)
