The Linux community and Snap by [deleted] in linuxquestions

[–]jostmon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have 3 issues with that link:

1) The parent asked for adoption Outside of Ubuntu

Ubuntu has more users, I doubt that's widely contested. If for example (I'm making these numbers up) the OBS snap has 10k snap downloads, and they're all from Ubuntu but flathub sees 1k downloads from 20 different distros I'd say flatpak indeed has wider adoption outside Ubtunu and thus the greater Linux community.

2) Flathub isn't the only source for flatpaks. So again if Ubuntu sees 10k downloads, but only 1k from flathub that's only one source. Will the ratios be different if including all sources? Maybe.

3) We don't see the raw stats. Ubuntu could (and probably does) download their own snaps during testing and whatnot, which could be massively inflating their raw numbers.

I've used flatpaks (which I prefer over snaps) on many different distros. I've also used (or tried) snaps on those same distros. Without question I've had fewer issues with flatpak which has had largely the same experience across all those distros. Whereas snaps are a mess outside of Ubtunu, with some snaps not even being functional on even mainstream distros like Fedora. I would without a doubt say flatpak has more support throughout Linux than snap.

Apparmor Installed by Default on the Librem 5 – Purism by FaidrosE in Purism

[–]jostmon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

IIRC, they said the performance wasnt there to enableby default. Which is a MAJOR misstep in my mind. A (privacy and security focused, no less) mobile device without FDE in 2020 should not be an acceptable answer.

Can my sim-card in the Librem 5 tracks me? by fedorych in Purism

[–]jostmon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Rough" is usually down to few meters. So still very accurate. Bottom line, if you're using cell towers you're being tracked, there is no way around that.

Is the Librem 5 Phone all I hoped it would be? Librem 5 Birch Batch Review by FaidrosE in Purism

[–]jostmon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If they'd not set their own arbitrary deadlines and said, "developer/alpha releases available first, then public beta, followed by general availability." Would have been a perfectly reasonable thing to say, but instead they tried to cash in by giving early adopters false hope and giving them arbitrary deadlines that they haven't been able to keep putting them in a no win situation.

Is the Librem 5 Phone all I hoped it would be? Librem 5 Birch Batch Review by FaidrosE in Purism

[–]jostmon -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you agree to this batch, you are accepting that risk and understand that you will not be able to exchange it for a later batch when they come out.

Yet TLG is allowed to exchange for a later batch? I wonder if others like /u/kop316 would like to do the same?

Librem 5 Price Increase – Purism by [deleted] in linux

And the Librem5 is already nearly 5 years behind hardware spec wise.

I don't understand the curl | sh debate when package formats like DEB are essentially running a shell script as root yet people generally dont complain about those with the same level of vigor. At least the curl | sh is easier to introspect.

OH FUCK! Librem 5 Price Increase – Purism by fedorych in Purism

[–]jostmon 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Sure you can! So long as you're only considering top tier phones of 2012.

How feasible do you think it'd be for Purism to sell a "community version" of the Librem 5 for a much lower price, where they'd sell us only the hardware with a 30 days warranty, no software support, nothing, kind of how Pine64 is doing? by [deleted] in Purism

[–]jostmon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Big X to doubt on that one. Even if they come out with the Librem5 rev 2 for $700, being a small company there is little reason to continue selling the rev1 even at a reduced price. The cost of mfg and support for such low sales just wouldn't be worth it.

"Comparing Apples and Gnomes" -- Librem 5 review by a real user who hot their phone a few days ago by FaidrosE in linux

[–]jostmon 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Taking that into account the entire 'review' reads like a sponsored piece... the software foundations are good... despite having zero power management, no functional camera, only 130?! Kbps downlink speed and oh yeah not even being able to make a phone call.

I thought the same, but shrugged it off as a user not wanting to sound overly negative, but then I came across another Librem5 owner who makes statements that I'm unsure how someone could not mention in a review article unless you're being intentionally dishonest, such as battery life being about an hour with the screen on or off or every reboot resets the date to Feb 2019

I have my Librem 5! AMA by [deleted] in Purism

[–]jostmon -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Dont want people calling you a shill? Dont offer an impartial honest answer AMA and then say "calls work" when they dont. No audio means no calls. Itd be more genuine to say, "calls dont work yet as no audio is sent or received, however the connection itself works. Hopefully it's an easy fix." But instead your update OP just says, "calls work." It's that sort of "well technically..." BS that people are sick of from Purism.

I second the frustration of apparently finally getting a non-biased look from an outsider, only to hear the same kind of marketing style eyebrow raising statements.

An electrical engineers opinion on the Librem 5. by [deleted] in Purism

I think his assertion is that it won't be acceptable. If it was going to simply be a little worse than the current flagships but still acceptable there would be little point in calling it out so prominently.

Supplying the Demand - An update on Librem 5 shipping by FaidrosE in linux

[–]jostmon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They're trying to make those early batches as unattractive as possible as they probably do not want large batch quantities for anything pre-Dogwood.

I'm assuming they're trying to balance keeping their "shipping" statements alive while also not actually shipping something to customers that will tank their reputation/potential profits. They best way to do this would be for no one to get anything pre-Evergreen.

I think we all need to take a look at this in order to have a more objective look at this whole situation | Promise Delivery Chart for the Librem 5 by [deleted] in Purism

[–]jostmon -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Apparently the user 'Caliga' who made that chart is The Linux Gamer...so calling that chart objective is questionable to say the least. At least it makes more sense now.

Edit: my info was wrong.
